OK, I'm just nagging cause i don't have anything better to do with my time here so... IMO oldschool is a style, it doesn't mean that the artists have released stuff early on in the goa scene. Then I'd call it "classic artists" or something like that. As a point of comparison, I wouldn't call Shaolin Wooden Men oldschool even if they were releasing stuff already in 1994 but I WOULD call Ypsilon 5 oldschool even if their first release is from 2004!

So last year this was playing at a festival in the "wierd psy tent" (usually finnish stuff so it wouldn't surprise me if it was from some finnish artist) So basically the track is very vocal-oriented... during almost the whole track there's a female voice saying something like "My friend is going insane. There are a lot of things I'd like to tell him but I can't." (VERY aproximative quote...). As a track it's not that great but if you just took an acid and you're next to a friend at the party and hear that sample over and over... maaaan it's freaky so can anyone help me ID the track?

yeah they were supposed to release Concentrix... And I miss the time when you could go to a 3-day festival in Belgium filled with top names for only 7,5 Euros

I don't really see the point in saying that it'll be the last... they'll probably release another one (in 2020? ) under a different name. I'm sure that Raja and Simon will keep collaborating.

not really, they have a pretty unique style. The one that comes closest IMO is Sun Project but it's not really the same... Anyway, I was impressed too by that album on first few listens but found it got boring fast...

yes that I do agree with. It's far from the cookie-cutter full-on tracks being released by the dozens our days

They have arrived First of all, I have to admit that to this date I've STILL never gave Detonator a listen *bows his head in shame*. So I can't compare this to his debut album... I say this mainly because I've heard some people say that compared with the 1st album this was a major dissapointment. Well, for me this is one of the better albums of the year! It's night pumping trance with a lot of scary spooky atmospheres. In The Chosen One Miraculix has also put in that epic-feeling during breakdowns à la The Misted Muppet (this is really becoming a trand these days...) but here the overall feeling is much darker. But contrary to The Misted Muppet, Miraculix didn't use this trick in EACH of his tracks. Scary Things has an even darker atmosphere with a scary sample "Have you ever had a dream where everything seemed so real that once you wake up it's not a dream. It's reality. There is nothing you can do about it." That would sure scare me shitless if I heard it during a night set while tripping hard... Although this track is more on the minimal side, it has less melodies so I don't like it as much. Hold Them Back is less dark, more party-oriented. Near the end it has some nice 303s, kindof reminds me of oldschool. Blow it up is the one I like lease on this album, it has a dark melody but it's kindof childish, reminds me a bit of 1200 Mics - WWW Eclipse has an interesting synth melody which is followed by the bassline (kindof like in Etnica - VCO ) I like that effect, and then some spooky melodies come in during the second half of the track. Although as a whole, this track isn't really one of my favorites either. Defend the Base ahh this one's more to my liking, it feels more powerfull than the other tracks till here (which doesn't mean that the others aren't dancefloor oriented, just that this one is even more powerfull than the others). The track begins with a sample :"Security has been breached. All system alert" then a stylish alarm goes on (not the rave type, it's really interesting). Then it slowly builds up around that alarm noise. The breaks are really neat in this one, I like the melodies a lot. This one also reminded me of The Misted Muppet's style: there are nice melodies during the breaks, but they don't continue once the bass picks up. That's a bit dissapointing. Search and Destroy is a complete change from the rest of the album: this is morning style, with a LOT of oldschool influences. Need I say that it's my favorite track here? Diablo turns back with a bit of darkness although it's lighter than the other tracks before Search and Destroy. It has a nice melodic bassline, although a bit simplistic. Kindof reminds me of the "usual" full-on. They Have Arrived is the mandatory downtempo track... and not a very good one... personally I could've done without... Sounds like a normal track played with the pitch at -15%. Conclusion one of the better albums of the year without being exceptional either. I haven't listened to Detonator so I can't compare it to his preveious stuff (I've heard people say that this is a big dissapointement when compared to the debut album). Sometimes it sounds really good, other times it's a bit simplistic. But it's defintley dancefloor-oriented so I guess that even the more simpler tracks will work well in a DJ set. 8/10 faves: 1 (!), 3, 6, 7 (!!)

pop crap... except for Horus the Chorus

err... sometimes I read the reviews, then listen to the album and end up wondering if we're all talking about the same thing... IMO this SUCKS bigtime!!! Since when is a loud bassline with random squeltches thrown into your face considered good??? At least with "GMS fomula stompers" you get a climax near the end which gives you an adrenaline rush even if the track is mediocre... here you don't even have that. It's loud bassline, wierd noises, other wierd noises, yet other wierd noises and then the end... WTF?? This has NO melody, no feeling, no atmospheres, no nothing. It could work good on a dancefloor, agreed, but other than that... A few exceptions though: Bubble Skum which is a KILLER!!! Slow and dark progression, this one reminded me a lot of Parasense although it's more dynamic than a usual Parasense track. Also More Me has a dark and spooky atmosphere, listen to this full volume at a party while tripping and you'll get a fuggin baaad trip. I like this one a lot as well Infected by 3d is one I like less but I admit it would work well in a night set on the dancefloor, it has some twisted sounds and a nice atmosphere. other than that... Conclusion I fail to see why everyone's so excited by this one... Yes, there are some dancefloor stromers in there but I'd definatley wouldn't give this album as many positive marks as everyone else gave it... 7/10 from me and I'm being generous... BTW I see that DP was most impressed by track 4... I found that one the WORST on the album!! well, to each their own I guess...

well here is one that comes close, in Last Hippie Standing is a documentary on the psytrance Scene in Goa. At the end of the movie there is indeed a part where they say that a girl from the film (Cleo something) died shortly afterwards, I think from cancer. However the plot is WAY off from what you described... This is certainly not the movie you describe unless you were REALLY high and didn't really get the movie...

hey man I didn't know such a movie existed!! are you sure it was released or was it some sort of private production by the party organizers? I'm surprised cause normally I know ALL the psytrance-related movies out there...

For some odd reason, even though Belgium was the world capital of industrial which was the main inspirer of goatrance and that most early goa albums were released on Belgian record lables, and that Front 242 has remixed Juno Reactor quite often... we've NEVER had a proper psytrance act!! Lani would be the first... if it weren't for Concentrix who released an album last year. But I found that one fogettable so could Lani finally be THE first well-known Belgian psy artist? hmmm... well as the name sugests, this album is on the morning side... but it gets WAY too cheezy... Iry's Incantation , Indian , El Paso , Our Way to the Sun and Ephedra actually sound like music from some 80s NES game! I'd easily imagine this kind of music playing in the background of some commercial on Slimweight 4000 or something... Luckily enough there are 3 more serious tracks on the album: Part of a Design which still sounds cheezy but at least is on a bearable level of cheziness IMO. And Skynet which has some interesting guitar samples in it. Still, I wouldn't consider those tracks as something exceptional either... Over the Moon is my fave track on this album, it could actually be used in a morning set IMO but still it's cheezy as hell... Conclusion AFAIK, in all the history of psytrance, there are only 2 full albums out there by Belgian artists: the Concentrix album and this one... but both of them are average to downright awfull IMO. That's why I'm STILL waiting for a proper Belgian psy act... sorry guys... 6/10 maybe next time around they'll do better... Ah I can already hear you say "but if this is so bad, why a 6/10??". Here's why: it's NOT your cookie-cutter full-on so it does win points for originality. And I guess that if you're REALLY high at a party in the morning then hearing such fluffy sounds WILL bring a smile on your face. And last of all, these guys are from Belgium!! Belgian artists deserve some encouragement

and you forgot the In Dub album... actually in the end it's In Dub that stayed in my CD player the longest. Actually I just re-listened to it a week ago and realized that it holds to time pretty well, contrary to the Shpongle albums which I find frankly boring today... Oh and you also fogot the Shpongle remix album...

Juno's just getting further and further from the "mainstream psytrance" sound... this sounds more like world-music blended with movie sountrack music with an extra layer of spanish influences (Juno takes the ideas in Pistolero and develops them in a much more serious note throughout the album IMO). Oh and it also has a lot of rockish influences as well... Creativity-wise I'd say that this is on par with Shpongle : these guys just take influences from all over the world (and music scene) and put them in a huge melting pot giving us a pleasurable experience. Mutant Message is my fave track, it's in the slow and heavy industrial style of the late 80s... I just love it when artists manage to put this huge power inside their tracks without going crazy with the BPMs! Anyone into industrial will know what I'm talking about. Eat your heart out Front 242 War Dogs reminded me a lot of God is God which is one of my fave Juno tracks so I love this one as well oh and Conquistador pt 2 sounds more like a remix of Conga Fury to my ears... also big thumbs up to Juno for giving us his interpretation of drum & bass with Giant Actually a little background check on Juno's history reveals that he made a project in the late 80s called Urban Jungle Project in which he was one of the precursors' of what was later to become D&B so I guess this is his chance to make a comeback and show the scene that there's still much unexplored space to be uncovered just like with the trance scene... other than that.... well there are just too many vocals for my tastes... [EDIT] Well after repeated listenings that Angels and Men track started to work VERY well!!! At first i didn't like the "angelic" voice singing but after some more listens it just seems to fit in perfectly, the whole track seems to tell a story it has become my absolute top chill-out track at the moment!! Finally something to match Lu Ci-ana Conclusion yes this is different and creativity-wise it deserves 11/10... but does it make it good? Well, I guess that's a matter of personal taste... I'm sure that Juno fans will love it... however I've never really been a huge Juno fan... so for me music-wise this is average. Sometimes there are so many vocals that I feel compelled to turn down the volume... Other times he makes some freakin great stuff! I won't rate this though, I think this is one of those "buy it and try it for yourself" albums

adding the cover image for anyone who's too lazy to click on the link so on to the review... the first thing that hit me is just how commercial Talamasca's sound went... Time Hunter actually sounds like something Yahel would've made! Now, cheeziness in itself isn't a bad thing IMO (I actually loved Yahel's first 2 albums...) but I'm just shocked to see Talamasca go that path... That said, this is a really hit and miss album for me: Time Hunter is nice in its commercial way, also Lestat Sound Development has a KILLER melody in the end. The Messenger also has its moments. Again, it's a little on the cheezy side but I like it a lot, and I just love how sometimes that monring happy feeling sudenly turns dark and then happy again. As to remind you your trip in the monring at a party, I think it works great in a well-constructed DJ set. Action has its moments but those guitars tend to get a little too cheezy as well, sometimes it sounds like this should've been the soundtrack to some 80s action movie (T2 comes to my mind for some reason...) and that's about it... the other tracks are just plain boring IMO... simple melodies and overall a too "happy" feeling... mediocre full-on... Conclusion hit and miss album from Lestat and his friends... 7,8,9 are great but the others just lack creativity to stand out of the hoard of 1001 full-on tracks being released every month... You can do better Lestat... 6/10

what would've you added to the poll then? BTW And I'd hardly consider that Technossomy album THE classic... what do you people think?

Many many times I've heard people say stuff like "this sounded horrible on the first few listens but then when I listened to it some more something happened and I found it was great!" So anyone has any coments on just why it is so and how much is the recomended "number of listens" to get it?

agreed that IM sounds 1000 times better live than on albums... the proof being that I don't like IM albums at ALL but I absolutley loved their live performance!!
