interesting what you say there... but maybe it has more to do with the electromagntetic waves generated by all those electronic appliances? There is a current of thought saying that the brain produces electromagnetic waves and that ANY source of elecromagnetic waves influences the one generated by our own brain. Some people are more ensitive than others, but people who believe in this theory say that a person shouldn't even have a digital clock in their bedroom!! SMI²LE

oh and also Menog - Natural behaviour ... not as groundbreaking but still dark and good :-) SMI²LE

try out the new Orbis Tertius compilation. Like I said in the reviews section, I find that they take dark melodic psy to a new level!! SMI²LE

OK the matter's settled then ;-D SMI²LE

Dr. Hoffman: Well, I wouldn't go further into splitting up genres. Of course, you can always go further to the point that basically every artist has his/ her/ their own category, but that would be too complicated. I'd put everything that's full-on without sounding warm and catchy into the Full-on category. On the other hand, you could also divide the melodic/ israeli trance style into oldschool, melodic, israeli, etc. and argue that AP and Pleiadians have different sounds. Or, as it was said, that X-Dream and Son Kite are different. But IMO if it has the same caracheristics and it is played at the same hours in a set, it should go together... I mean, in the morning sets, there's a high chance that a DJ will play AP AND Pleiadians, in a night set, the DJ will play X-Dream AND Son Kite... but of course, this is only my opinion, feel free to create your own categories... "Lemmiwinks , if you say 03 is the year that the minimal trend officially ??? ended ... you really don't know shit about it ... it just simple ... if you're not digging the style , you just don't know what's upcoming and what are fresh releases . " well, like I said, between 99 and 03 about 90% new releases were minimal, now that trend is dying... wasn't I clear enough? That doesn't mean that there aren't ANY fresh minimal releases anymore, simply that there are (far) LESS releases than in the previous years!!! And I'm not saying that those releases are BAD!! simply that the proportion is changing. I was merely pointing that out, I didn't mean to bash minimal again cause you all already know that it's not really my style... "on the other hand , it's all based on our roots .. if you were an ex-rocker , ex-gabber , ex-clubber ... you'll definitely like full-on psytrance " now sorry Setsuko but that is just ridiculous!!! IMO people that WERE into goa from the beginning appreciate full-on better whereas people that were into techno (clubbing) before tend to like minimal!!! You got it all backwards!!! Minimal was here AFTER full-on!!!! Artists like AP, Transwave, MWNN etc. basically created something new from scratch when you listen what was out in the other electronic music scenes at the time, whereas minimal is clearly techno with added "psychedelicness" to it. Hell, even Son Kite himself admits to bringing Detroit techno influences into psy. They didn't create their sound, they adapted techno to psy!! which isn't to say it's bad, to each his own, but don't tell me that a "true" trancer is more into minimal... SMI²LE

awww come on you guys, this isn't THAAAAAAT bad!! By the sounds of it, I could swear that it was made in 96, but if you like your oldschool goa and the CS sound, then this is one for you!! Personally, I just love those continuously-morphing melodies that just go on and on. And I think that some tracks like Whirlpool, Language and Utopia still have their place in a well-constructed morning set!! 9/10 Call me old-fashioned but I like it!! (of course, if you were already bored by the CS sound since Nasha, then I guess you shouldn't bother with this one...)

ooops, I didn't really mean to start a flame war, it was merely something I observed out of the new releases that have been hitting us lately. I mean, from 99 to 02, like 90% new releases were minimal, now it's changing. And yes, I'm pushing a sigh of relief cause I'm more into full-on. But I didn't intend to bash minimal... SMI²LE

oops, I should replace my "Finish trance" category with this: Finish trance/ aussie trance/ Psyharmonics stuff: (called like this cause most artists doing it are from Finland/ Australia/ or usually release their stuff on the labe Psyharmonics): Very wierd trance, with a lot of crazy and innovative ideas, very random, doesn't seem like it's "going somewhere". Some love it, others utterly hate it. Examples: Texas Faggot, Haltya, early Space Tribe, Shaolin Wooden Men, Loopus in Fabula, Odd Harmonic... SMI²LE

here's my list of "sub-genres" (not perfect, you can always find flaws cause any clasification method is bound to show its limits, but like Aaron said, I find it good to say what sub-genre a person likes so he/ she can find CDs he/ she likes more easily) morning trance: well, there are 2 categories in there... sub-subgenre 1 is the "real" morning trance as purists would say, rather slow BPM, never above 120 and very relaxed airy feeling, with a lot of nature samples. examples: Feuerhake, Kode IV, Zorba, Bodh Gaia, Element, Son of the Light, 1200 Micrograms - Ayahuasca... (this is also what comes closts to the "original trance" that was played in Goa in the early 90s) sub-sub-genre 2 (my favorite!!) , (also called israeli-trance cause most artists making it were from Israel, although this is changing now) is more dancefloor-oriented, the kind of music that's played in parties when the sun rises: fast, between 130 - 150 BPM, usually very emotional and "catchy". Usually you go home from a party having that tune in your head. Examples: Yahel - Last Man in the Universe, Chi AD- Eye am the I, Astral Projection - People Can Fly, Zorba - Datora, Space Tribe Vs. Electric Universe - Alkaloid Experiement, Transwave - The Rezwalker, UX - Masters of the Universe, Ra -ROM, Dimension 5, Man With No Name - Teleport... (you can probably tell by the tracklist that this is what was usually called "goatrance" around 1996 by record labels that thought they coined a new "hip" term) 3D Vision-style/ Full-on (called like this because the label "3D Vision" specialized in this kind of music, but then they were copied by many labels): fast 140- 150 BPM, melodic but more harsh-sounding, more on the agressive side of things (and some would say "more E-oriented"). Examples: Talamsaca - Come On, Absolum - Drumatrix, Nomad, GMS, Alien Project... Minimal/ Psy-tekk: more techno-influenced, a lot less "challenging" then the other styles, more bass-driven. This style hit us around 1998, and some loved it and considered it was a welcome change to the usual melodic stuff, others (like me...) found it had nothing to do with "psy". Untill this year, about 80% psy releases were minimal, but this is changing now. Anyway, that doesn't mean you can't find artists that are doing good stuff... Examples: X-Dream - Radio (the one that started it all IMO), Kopfuss Resonator, Shiva Chandra - Gecko, MOS - Drive,... Nitzhonot - Well, most people will say this isn't really psy... it's done mostly in Israel and Greece and it sounds like kids playing around with cartoon-samples and melodic psy ideas, but not something very coherent. It's sorta like melodic/ israeli trance pushed to the limit of commericalism. Examples: Eyal Barkan, Holy Men, Cyan,... Industrial goa - Harsh, dark-soudning goa, with distorted noises, fast, indsutrial-inflenced. Examples: Battle of the Future Buddhas, Tim Schuldt - Single Collection, Ka-Sol,... Finish trance (cause most of the artists doing it are from Finland)- Very wierd trance, with a lot of crazy and innovative ideas, very random, doesn't seem like it's "going somewhere". Some love it, others utterly hate it. Examples: Texas Faggot, Haltya,... ... well, there you go, this isn't perfect, but it will allow you to clasify about 90% of the releases out there... SMI²LE

Wizzy Noise - Light of Madness Neuromotor - Black Planet Parasense - Meteor Shield That'll get them started... SMI²LE

ha ha ha ha!!! I've been waiting for this moment for like 4 years now, but I think that we can say that 03 was officially the year that ended all the minimalist trend... Do you people agree? SMI²LE

so what will it be? For me: Tara in Project - Deep Inside SMI²LE

BTW after a LOT of thinking it over, I finally realized that the beginning of "No Copys" sounds VERY much like the beginning of Madonna - Papa Don't Preach!!! he he he you can see why they called it "no copys"... those funny psy artists :-D
-
very very nice album!!! If you're not much into GMS (like me...) then don't worry, this sounds more like what a new Yahel album should if he continued his trend from "For the People/ Waves of Sound", than actual GMS. Well, except for that average production and badly-chosen synth-sounds that sound like this music was made by some 16-year old on an Amiga rather than by professional artists on synths... But if you can get by that, then you're in for a treat!! Very melodic anthem-like psy and Lord knows we haven't got any of that for a few years now... All tracks are perfect for listening in a sunny day (preferably after a goa party...), very dreamy, very warm. Last track (Datora) is the best IMO, I heard it at a party a few months ago and it totally blew me away!!! The kind of melody that stays in your head all morning, it kinda reminded me of Hyperion - Sunflower and we all know what an excellent track that was! 8/10 (only 8 because of the bad production)

V/A - Orbis Tertius Artist: Various Title: Orbis Tertius Label: Timecode Date: 2003 Track listing: 01. Intro : In Void Plate 02. Wizzy Noise : Light Of adness 03. NRS : Trouble On Tlon 04. Phyx : Secret Syntheses 05. Artifakt : 9 Coins 06. Shift : Absolution 07. Lemurians : Echoes Of Madness 08. Rabdom L : Killswitch 09. Artifakt : IS EA ID 10. Xatrix : File 2 Review: VERY EVIIIIIILLLLL compilation!!! This one belongs right up there with the Schlabbaduerst Rekkords compilations... yes, it's THAT dark!! Wizzy Noise impressed me, they got even darker than they're usual stuff, I'd even say they took dark psy to a new level with Light of Madness, definatley a must-have!! Other favorite pick is Phyx - Secret Syntheses, again, I find they took dark psy to a new level. But the rest are pretty cool too. 10/10 for this groundbaker that reset the standards of darkness!! Don't try this at home kids!!

check out Tara in Project - Deep inside it has that "oldschool" feeling to it although it's innovative at the same time!! SMI²LE

yeah man I never even thought a psytrance artist was capable of such things... Did you check out the part where he pulls to the club in a Lincoln Navigator streched-out limo??? SMI²LE
-
I heard some new MWNN on some vids of him playing live and I was impressed!! Of course it still sounds warm and almost-commercial, but what would you expect from MWNN??? If you loved his tracks like Teleport, The Breach, Seratonin Sunrise etc. then you won't be dissapointed!! But if you're into minimal....... SMI²LE
-
yeah well old stuff like IFO still beats the crap out of 99% of the new releases!! SMI²LE
