Protoculture played by... Armin Van Buuren
Lemmiwinks replied to Lemmiwinks's topic in General Psytrance
yes yes I know, that's actually quite the paradox of those days: people remember them as beeing the most underground yet they were the most commercial at the same time. Like, today I complain about Armin spinning Protoculture but back in the days Hallucinogen's LSD passed on daytime radio. Ah well... I guess that the fact that drugs were a lot more easily available back then probably had something to do with all this -
Many many moons ago, before I was into goa, I used to be a massive hardcore addict (well, like most people who were teens in the mid 90s living in these parts I guess, still have a massive collection of Thunderdome comps that are gathering dust on a shelf). Anyway, I have almost completely lost touch with the scene but I have come across some REALLY cool hardcore tracks that I enjoyed lately. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ql-siWaceEI the melody kicking in around 2:30 is like on of the best EVER!!! So, can anyone recommend me more like this? thanks

oh come on, if there is a subgenre that's easily recognizable in today's scene it is dark psy: really fast rolling bassline with hard schreechy sounds and the occasional dark atmosphere. If you can't tell dark psy from other psy subgenres then you have a REAL problem mate damn, have I lost that much contact with the scene that I don't even new of new subgenres? What exactly is the definition of "twilight"? Can you give me some examples? thanks

Protoculture played by... Armin Van Buuren
Lemmiwinks replied to Lemmiwinks's topic in General Psytrance
hm yeah but times were very different back then IMO since pretty much ALL trance was underground, the difference between psychedellic and non-psychedellic (and acid techno for that matter) wasn't as huge as today. If anything, I agree that there are MANY progressive psy tunes that would fit in pefectly in some of today's commercial sets, but IMO progressive isn't really psytrance Anyway, like I said, this was all more of a personal rant than anything else, I was just surprised to hear the name Protoculture pronounced by Armin that I felt I had to share it with you all. but then what would this forum be without its professional whiners -
hmm no... I also happen to have been in the scene for many many years and seen the "dark sound" develop. As far as I can tell, the first dark psy (I mean, for what is called today the dark psy subgenre) artists to come to the scene were Parasense. Of course, you can find many other artists who were also dark and who have obviously inspired the sound (The Delta, Battle of the Future Buddhas... hell, I even remember the days when the darkest thing to hit the scene was Hallucinogen's The Lone Deranger ). Anyway, there are all dark... but NOT dark psy
-
Blimey I just realized that THE best dark psy tune I've ever come across isn't even featured on youtube! Problem fixed Anyway, THIS is how dark psy SHOULD sound IMO: brutal in-your-face basslines with scary wind noises that sound like a giant monster is right behind you breathing on your neck and the little noises that make you feel like an army of spiders are just creeping up your legs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-OYc86j_QI PS can anyone recommend me more like this?

Protoculture played by... Armin Van Buuren
Lemmiwinks replied to Lemmiwinks's topic in General Psytrance
well that's exactly my point... I mean, if Armin would've played some South African full-on I would've said "finally, the scene is getting the attention it deserves", but here we have a psytrance artist who changes his style in the sole purpose of getting commercial attention. That is a big no-no in my book. Although such style changes are nothing new, like IM have been making pop music for years now. Anyway, just my personal rant -
How big was my surprise to hear THE Armin Van Buuren say that he will play "the new Protoculture" on his A State Of Trance radio show, I was like WTF? It must be a name coincidence or something. But I double-checked the net and it is indeed the full-on artist from South Africa, and apparently he has changed his sound beyond recognition. Not that I don't like commercial trance but I REALLY hate it when an underground artist joins the bandwagon like that... So what do you guys think? Is this a good thing or a bad thing? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qw4u6tGaQac

OMG just heard this one a few days ago sounds.... Shpongly... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQhx9hP5sk8
-
well it sounds like progressive psy to my ears... the melodies follow an oriental scale, that's pretty psy-ish in my book
-
I think EVERYONE knows Eric Prydz for his remix of Call On Me... anyway, I was listening the radio and stumble on a GREAT psy track (already a surprise to hear psytrance played on daytime radio...), I hear that the track is by some mysterious "Pryda"... and a check on discogs shows me that it's none other than the "non-commercial" alter-ego of Eric Prydz! anyway, it is a GREAT tune, I'm happy to see some mainstream names showing interest in our scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Qwu1TWeZfA

this is mine, it's currently getting a LOT of airplay on the radio and I just can't get enough of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FaEqhh3zh0 So what about yours? (and please, no one mention Swedish House Mafia lol)
-
well like that was the whole point of the movie IMO: it starts out like some predictable film noir and then takes us to places we didn't expect at all (at least I didn't expect them...)
-
ok, a few more listens later it sounds ok, I'm developping a liking for Liquid Stranger - Shake My Ass (starts around 1:05:20)
-
well actually I gave it a few listens today and I'm pretty dissapointed Most of the tracks had cheezy rapping and even singing (!!) in them, it sounded more like some sort of pop-dance-dub rather than the dark filthy stuff that Excision got us used to. I'll give it a while, maybe it will grow on me but for the moment this gets a huge thumbs DOWN from me

Shambala 2010 just released!! Enjoy
-
I get what you're saying there, my problem with her is that she playes like the exact same role whatever the movie, it gets boring after a while...
-
Just saw the trailer to this thing... it's like Saw x 10 lol OK, I have no idea whether the story is worth it or not but it's certainly the gorriest thing I've seen come out of Hollywood in a long time. PS I especially like the scene when the dude cuts open a man's belly and uses his intestins as a chord to jump from the building lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCkW5MpeUXE&feature=player_embedded

OMG!!! Had it not been for some random recomendation I would've totally walked passed this one. The BEST movie I've seen in a loooong time!! 10/10 Of course, anyone who's been on the edge of madness with the help of certain hmm... substances will totally relate to this movie IMO.
-
wow killa stuff can't wait for Shambala 2010 cause I'm kindof lagging behind on new dubstep releases, I'm really interested to see what the summer of 2010 has to offer
-
blimey I wasn't expecting that...
-
yep, my thoughts exactly... now David Lynch, HE knew to fully explore the dream world
-
hmm I'm sorry to say this but this one is a big dissapointment for me... First of all, there is no evolution in the Upsalla crew's sound, not a single track here sounds like it couldn't have been released 10 years ago. OK, I appreciate when a group stays true to their sound, but in this particular case this sound generated a whole sub-genre called forest trance and you can't help compare this release with other forest trance out there, with the immediate conclusion that it just sounds dated. There are basically only 3 tracks that I got into: Drums in the Deep (which is the most innovative track on the album IMO), North South with a great melody in the second half and the last track, Hangman which has some GREAT morning melodies in there. Otherwise, the other tracks simply sound too dull to me, there isn't enough progression going on to keep me interested, and I can't help think that BotFB and Ka-Sol gave us MUCH better stuff in the past. 3/5... sorry guys but you can do better... PS Other than that, great cover design (COVER OF THE YEAR IMO!!).

So anyone seen what seems to be the blockbuster of the summer so far? I've seen it, and have quite mixed feelings on it. I mean, I LOVE movies who explore the border between reality and dreams, but I found this one to be too much on the action side of things, I would've prefered a more philosophical approach... I mean David Lynch made better stuff more than a decade ago Anyway, it was better than most crap our there. So what are your thughts on it?
