(inspired by Pandemonium's comment in this topic) Well Pandemonium put the finger on something that has been bugging me for years: it seems that no matter how much I'd appreciate a modern trance release I just can't get myself to put it in the "classics" category. I always find it's somehow lacking compared to the "gods" Pleidaians, Astral Projection, Prana, Transwave and such. Even new attempts to revive oldschool seem to fall short from the list, even though some newschool artists basically use the oldschool formulas. Now I've always wondered WHY? Is it that the music made back then REALLY was that exceptional or is it just that we tend to cling to that feeling we had when first discovering this kind of music?

off the top of my head: Toi Doi - Technologic (one word: REPLICANT!!!) Battle of the Future Buddhas - Twin Sharkfins (Lord of the Dance is still in my top 5 morning trance tracks of all time) Chi AD - Anno Domini, Infinitism and Biocandy and I know that a lot of you won't agree with this one but: 1200 Mics - 1200 Micrograms probably many more that I can't think of right now...

hmmm I still have my doubts... after all, there isn't any actual proof of this except Sacha's own word. Don't forget that people like David Copperfield made a longlasting and successfull career out of making people believe that illusions were real...

mate if those sitations weren't scripted then Sacha Baron Cohen would've recieved a bullet in his head a long time ago...

Ah well, yesterday my gf wanted to go to the movies and since this was basically the only movie playing there that didn't seem like pure crap I decided to give it a go. Knowing Sacha Baron Cohen's older movies I wasn't expecting much, but in the end I actually laughed a lot more than I was expecting to. The concept of the movie is simple: take an actor, make him act as gay as possible in the most gay-unfriendly places that you can imagine (in the middle of orthodox jews or going on a hunting trip with some redneck Americans, etc.). There are some situations where you wonder how Sacha Baron Cohen and his filming crew made it out alive, then you realize that this movie is only made to look like they're filming real life situations but in reality it's all scripted material... There are some scenes which are a bit over the top (for example the dancing penis scene... although I'm glad that this is basically the first wide-audience movie to actually play gabber in their soundtrack ) but all in all I'm pretty happy I've seen it. It definately deserves an A for twisted and original humour. There are also some pretty subtile jokes in there ("OK so that's Darfour, now where's Dar-five?"). What I found even funnier than the joke itself was that like half the audience didn't get it lol. My only regret is that this movie focuses like 95% on gay people and only 5% on fashion, seeing the movie description and all I was expecting more of a 50-50 focus. Oh and needle ninja: believe me, all those previews don't really give you an impression of the movie, there are many many more shocking (even obscene) scenes that they didn't dare show in the previews PS I suppose he meant "niche", as in niche market

I think he meant that most of their "trademark" melodies (from the old style) were very much inspired by black metal...

hush up now, you're not supposed to say this kindof thing out loud

A La Mezcla (Original Version) (12:13) B La Mezcla (Dub Version) (9:06) OK, technically speaking this is tribal house, not psy BUT I really find it has its place in this reviews section. There are a LOT of djembé rythms going on and there are these wonderful latin american influences, which remined me a lot of Shpongle. The original version starts out with a djembé rythm and then other drum layers start adding up progressively then around 2:30 comes a break and a VERY catchy flute melody (I ended up whistling for days). Now this is the sweet part: if you listen really closely, you'll find a little instrument kicking around 2:50 which sounds very much like the one in Shpongle - Divine Moments of Truth around 2:10. Then all the tribal rythms pick up again, making you at least nod your head in rythm, if not actually getting up and dancing. Around 4:30 comes some spanish singing that kindof ruins the feeling for me, although Ive found that the more I listened to it, the more the voice part made sense. That said, I would've much prefered an instrumental version identical to this but without the singing... The dub version is purely instrumental, it doesn't have the voice part, but I also found it a bit more flat and less catchy than the original. Oh and in case you were wondering, the dub influences are really minimal, it has the same ethnic house feeling as the A-side. I won't hide the fact that I'm a bit dissapointed with new psy releases in 09, hence my tendencies to stray off the "usual" path of psytrance lables to explore some new genres out there. I must say that I'm pretty impressed by this release, and I think that any Shpongle fan will love this as well. 4/5

back in the days it used to be Infected Mushroom... I'd always read heaps and heaps of positive reviews on their albums, give them a listen and wonder what the hell is supposed to be so good about them (although these days many people agree to call their new stuff crap ). Similarly, although on a lesser scale (I DO like some of their stuff, but find them very overrated): Juno Reactor, KoxBox, Penta, Psykovsy (Da Budet album) and even the high and mighty Hallucinogen. Also, some of the members of the newschool movement, but I won't give any names since even though I don't really like their stuff, I appreciate their effort to revive oldschool

MJ's ghost has returned to haunt Neverland!!

so what do you think of it then?

so it seems that Sacha Baron Cohen (aka Alli G, aka Borat...) is back with a new flick, this time as a gay austrian fashion designer. Did anyone see it yet? My problem with this guy is that, although he comes up with some great sideshow carachters, he never really manages to deliver a good full movie, so I'm kindof hesitating on whether I should see this one. So I'd apreciate your views on it

umm... I think this belongs in the For Sale/ Trade section...

AMEN!!! I've been through 3 different soundcards just to find one that works with my laptop!! There are HUGE compatibility issues so be sure that whatever you buy the store will accept back for a refund if it doesn't work. In the end I went with an Echo Indigo, they are reasonably priced for the quality and I'm fairly happy with it (but not entirely happy...). As for compatibility issues, I found that the ones that integrate best are the pc-card (or pcmcia if you have an older laptop). They are also a lot more practical since you won't have a little box dangling from a cable attached to your PC. Also, if you go for Firewire, be sure that you have a 6-pin output from your laptop, if you have a 4-pin out, then you'll need a separate power adapter for the soundcard which is kindof bulky...

New Oakenfold Mix 2XCD - Perfecto Vegas - In Stores 07.07.09
Lemmiwinks replied to Denice's topic in Free Music Promotion
hum you might not know this, but people in the psytrance scene don't look to kindly to Oakenfold since he's basically the first goatrance sellout ever (although these days everyone is doing it, so I guess that's it should be more easily accepted) -
ah well I still haven't listened to Skylon yet so I guess that's why I enjoy this

99% of the time the book is better than the movie, simply because they take the story into much more detail. You simply cannot put that much detail in a 1 and a half hour movie, and even if you did, it would seem too long and boring. Also with books you are involved in the action, whereas with movies you're just a spectator, you rarely FEEL like the main carachter, you just watch what he's doing (I guess that DaVinci code illustrates the feeling best) I guess that the only times when I prefer a movie to the book is when I'd like to know a book but find it's not worth my time and effort to actually spend my time reading it (especially if it's more than 300 pages). With a movie I get the general idea of the book in a condensed 1 and a half hour. So most of the times I'd be like "oh man, this is so average I'm glad I didn't spend a week reading the book" (Blade Runner comes to mind here ) -
haha I'd buy that release just for its name

ha well you see, just about EVERY comeback of former glories turned out to be fiascos (Sex Pistols, Police, Genesis...). Not to mention that MJ's own comeback with the album HIStory was a fiasco, so I'm pretty sure that this comeback would've been a fiasco as well, but anyway... I heard that he already sold a good part of his licences to Sony Music a while ago to pay for his lawyers during the "dark years" when just about every kid around the block was accusing him of being a pedophile.
