no it's not, I just double-checked
-
well actually that last part sounds more like pitched-up drum&bass than techno
-
Well you know the saying: either you know a lot about a specific matter or you know a little about everything. Hell, even I'm having a hard time classifying all the psytrance releases and I've been listening almost exclusevly to psytrance for more than a decade now... And I don't think As A Child I Could Walk On The Ceiling is actually featured in the guide... he puts Travelling at the Speed of Tought into goatrance and I agree with that, I mean it sounds closer to oldschool than to techtrance. Anyway, I don't agree with everything he says either but IMO that's the closest one could come to having a comprehensive guide to the million and one electronic music genres. If there's any better guide out there I'd like to know of it

Yo, I really like Electro Sun and CPU . . .
Lemmiwinks replied to simorq's topic in General Psytrance
I'd definately recommend Braincell - Frequency Evolution. Best full-on album I've listened to all year And yeah CPU is pretty crap lol -
yeah but maybe new Detroit techno actually sounds like trance now, who knows?
-
lol look at the dude's face around 1:55... priceless!! anyway, the discussion is a bit pointless IMO since obviously all genres "bleed" between eachother at one point or other. For example, X-Dream took a LOT of elements from techno around 2000 when everyone was applauding their creative change in style and I've heard some techno artists using a lot of trancy elements. Goatrance itself used a LOT of acid techno elements, hell I've listened to some old acid trance comps and I wondered what was the difference between that and oldschool goatrance. Or refering to Nemo's post on electro vs techno, the first wave of Detroit techno WAS electro, only afterwards did it develop into what we calle Detroit techno today (or used to call it, not up to date with recent progressions )

IMO it's impossible to have a 100% accurate or complete guide, simply because the styles change depending on the region of the World you come from. For example what was called hardcore in the UK in the early 90s has NOTHING to do with what was called hardcore in The Netherlands. But anyway, my biggest issue is that the guide is becoming outdated, Ishkur seems to have lost interest in updating it, I've always wondered if there is some other such guide that goes all the way to 2008?
-
always refer to Ishkur's guide to electronic music when in doubt

1. Squeezer 2. Warp Zone 3. Anti Gravity 4. Human V2 5. Enhanced Disclosure 6. Time Tunnel 7. Don't disturb the snake 8. Vibrations (Braincell rmx) 9. Bodyspeaker 2008 10. Daybreak (In case you were wondering, this is NOT the Braincell of old Harthouse and Eye Q fame, it is a different artist with the same name) I must admit I've never heard any of (this) Braincell's work until now, I gave this album a try after some recomendations and was amazed. He conveniently mixes in oldscool elements with full-on and even some progressive to give us an unique morning style. The album starts off with Squeezer that sounds kindof like progressive psy with a full-on bassline... not really my cup of tea... press forward on your remote please... Warp Zone starts just as boring as Squeezer but it gradually builds up and then around 2:30 a nice melody takes over. Ahhh that's more like it, but still something's missing here. Anti Gravity now Braincell hits us in full effect. An absolute dancefloor stormer, there are many oldschool influences but it is all made in a unique style, I just can't get enough of this one. Definately one of the best tracks of the year!! It all goes down a notch with Human V2 which is an ok track, but a bit dissapointing after hearing Anti Gravity. Enhanced Disclosure brings some more oldschoolish melodies. Very nice but not perfect... Then comes yet another dancefloor stormer Time Tunnel. You have to wait until 4:30 for this track to fully unleash its power but the wait is well worth it. One of the best melodies I've heard in a long time! Don't Disturb the Snake is still firing on all pistons but the melody isn't as magical as Anti Gravity or Time Tunnel. Vibrations brings us to the darker side of things, I'd call this one dark full-on. Some interesting twisted atmospheres and also some oldschoolish dark melodies, at parts it reminded me Darshan. Bodyspeaker 2008 continues in dark full-on territory but sounds pretty generic to my ears. I haven't heard the original Bodyspeaker but I kindof wonder why Braincell felt the need to make a remix... Daybreak ah who said that the tradition of putting a downtempo track at the end of an album was lost? Interesting track, it reminds me a LOT of some oldschool downtempo tracks. THE GOOD: tracks 3 and 6 are AMAZING, it's been a while since I haven't felt the urge of jumping from my chair and dance when listening to a killer track. I have put that down to getting older but it seems that a great track will still do it for me at any age THE BAD: pretty inconsistent album. While some tracks are instant classics, others are quite forgetable. CONCLUSION A killer album that I can only wholehartedly recommend to anyone into morning psy with oldschool influences. Not all tracks are great, but you will find more interesting tracks here than on most 2008 releases and IMO the dancefloor stormers more than compensate for the duds. 9,5/10

1. Tecnotika - Mentalisten (7:12) 2. Black Machine - Wrong Way (7:47) 3. Epi Centrum - Epi Centrum (6:21) 4. Kali Frogz - Agent Orange (6:07) 5. Metalogic - Transit Flash 2004 (6:21) 6. Le S4b0t3ur - Sabotage (7:45) 7. Trimada - Underworld (8:03) 8. Gothica - Beats And Breaks (7:35) 9. The Star Shrink Shooters - L.I.S. (9:00) OK, I’m not fully into techtrance but with time I have learned to appreciate stuff like The Delta, Spirallianz and so on. So I’m a bit disappointed that the Germans who used to make this style kindof abandoned it and decided to explore new ways. Nothing against exploring new sounds but I would’ve liked to hear some new “typical” techtrance stuff. Luckily someone recommended me this comp, I gave it a listen and I must say that I am impressed!! Just some history behind the comp title: you have to read some RA Wilson or Malaclypse the Younger (supposing they are actually 2 different authors ) books to understand, it comes from the Principia Discordia. The full quote goes like this: Greater Poop: Is there an essential meaning behind POEE? MAL-2: There is a Zen Story about a student who asked a Master to explain the meaning of Buddhism. The Master's reply was "Three pounds of flax." Greater Poop: Is that the answer to my question? MAL-2: No, of course not. That is just illustrative. The answer to your question is FIVE TONS OF FLAX! Ummm you probably don’t understand more from here, well just do some reading on Principia Discordia to get it Anyway, on to the tracks: Mentalisten feels like we’re back in 2000 and “The Delta sound” was the coolest thing to hit the psytrance scene Nice dark repetitive track, but a different kind of dark than what we are used to calling dark psy today. Wrong Way again, dark mechanical techno with atmospheric pads, at moments it feels like there is a giant steam train passing in the middle of the dancefloor. Epi Centrum brings more variety in the progression. Some nice arpeggios but I find other tracks on this comp nicer. Agent Orange some research on the name shows that this was one of the deadliest chemical weapons used during the Vietnam war, which is still responsible for deaths today. So you can imagine that this is a VERY dark, evil track, but again, think Delta evil, not dark psy evil. Transit Flash even more darkness here, the track starts with some killer atmospheres, then a monster bassline. Again, The Delta instantly comes to mind when listening to this one. Even the tension-release around 3:30 is almost a copy of the typical tension-release in Send In Send Back. Great track IMO. Sabotage brings in a lot of distortion and some twisted synth sounds. It is one of the most original tracks here but also one that I like less... Underworld starts off pretty calm actually, you’d almost think of a new age track, then the atmospheres get progressively darker, there is a noise like a giant gate slowly opening and then the bassline starts. Pretty atmospheric track, but it also reminds me a LOT of X-Dream’s Irritant Beats and Breaks brings in a “modern” rolling bassline. This is the track that fits least in this album but I still like it because of the twisted atmospheres. It really sounds like halfway between what used to be called dark psy in 2000 and dark psy in 2008. LIS call me stupid but I’m always a sucker for long atmospheric pads. Listening to this track really feels like taking a walk in a dark forest while having a dark trip. I can almost imagine everything I look at taking a sinister look when those pads are playing. Also some little noises in the background sound like some lizards or snakes crawling at my feet, it is SCARY! Also the best track on the album IMO. THE GOOD: At a time when people are concerned with reviving oldschool we easily tend to forget that other great subgenres of psytrance are also on the verge of extinction. Thanks to Mechanical Dragon for reviving techtrance THE BAD: Like with most “revival comps”, new artists seem more preoccupied with sticking to old proven formulas rather than trying new stuff out. But as long as the end result is good, who cares CONCLUSION: Absolutely killer techtrance comp. People like me who have started to miss the old Marcus projects will enjoy this one 8/10 (only 8 because of lack of originality)

After years and years of waiting, Ka-Sol FINALLY got his debut album released. I know that a lot of fans have been waiting for this one for a long time, and in my experience when people wait a long time for a release they get such high hopes that they almost inevitably get dissapointed when it's finally released. Luckily this is not the case here Some people used to Ka-Sol's sound on various scandinavian trance comps might be a little confused because this is morning trance, not really the dark stuff that we're used to hearing from him. I am explained that Ka-Sol always made morning music since the beginning of his project, just that the record lables he worked with prefered to release his dark stuff instead. Also people used to the Suntrip sound might be confused because this doesn't sound anything close to other Suntrip releases. This is because this album was never meant to be reseased on Suntrip, Anoebis and Mars just decided at the last minute to release it on their label because Christer couldn't find a label willing to release his stuff. So anyway, on to the tracks: Tecmorning is a pretty repetitive track with morning influences, not unlike what you could hear on Schlabbaduerst vol. 2. It is a nice intro track, but nothing to get too excited about. Blogz remains in darkish territory, but there is more variation in this one. Only Christer can find the audacity to mix in dark industrial sounds with djembés and even an oldschool goa-ish melody around 4:12. Shlumpen this is the track that sounds the most like the stuff people are used to hearing from Ka-Sol on Schlab comps. It is nice but doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album IMO. Skreno OMG this is IMO THE definition of trance music: a slow repetitive hypnotic melody and a crazy lead on top. The best track on the album IMO, absolutley genious. Back Basic (Goa Mix) I don't know about you, but personally I find it quite disturbing to see the word "Goa" specifically mentioned in a Ka-Sol track. And yeah, don't expect much oldschool here. I mean, there are oldschool elements (notably a 303 and an oldschoolih bassline melody), but interpreted by Christer's own rules Matrix Remix is an interesting morning track, it doesn't really sound like anything else out there. There are some VERY light melodies but also some dark typical sounds. It really feels like watching the sky during a very cloudy day and seeing some powerful rays of light come through from time to time. Near the end there is a buildup which sounds a bit wierd, like some tiny gnomes chanting in the forest and then some sounds that make me think of some alien replying to them. It is wierd, I know and Christer is one of the very few artists that manage to make me have such vivid images when listening to music without taking any drugs No Return again, transitioning from dark to light but I must say that this track inspires me less... I prefer skipping this one and moving forward. Sticky Web back into full morning territory with this one. This one actually makes me remember some old Eye Q stuff, there are some very raw and simple melodies, almost childish but they all work very nice in the end. White Magic this is an absolute dancefloor stormer. The kind of melody that just stays in your head for days and days. It also has the typical goa kick, an absolutly incredible track, it is a wonder how such a gem has been unreleased for such a long time. The Light yet another stormer and I must say that it fits in perfectly with White Magic, both these tracks sound like they should be one giant track. A lot of oldschool elements but again, interpreted in Christer's own way. It is absolute genious. Proof that there is still room for improvement in the genre. THE GOOD: creativity is skyhigh here. When you think that it is impossible to make morning trance that doesn't sound like a copy of everything that has been made in the past, think again THE BAD: pretty confusing at first when you are used to hearing Ka-Sol's and Suntrip's sound. Also some tracks are a bit too dark and don't really fit in this album. Conclusion: Hats off to this genious producer and hats of to the Suntrip crew for being crazy enough to release this. It is not a perfect album, but the originality more than compensates for any little inconvenients 9,5/10

I tried it out and it didn't really strike me... could you tell me exactly which part of Allah Acbar reminds you of which part of Robots?
-
ummm no...
-
hmmm that's odd cause the way I remember it, it was MUCH older than that... and hardcore was officially banned from the Loveparade in 1997... or maybe it was played at the Technoparade in Paris rather than the Loveparade? ah well I know I've already heard it SOMEWHERE in a live set many years ago, good tune nonetheless
-
I wouldn't call this psy, no... it has more in common with vocal trance like Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren than with psytrance. On the other hand, people still keep calling Infected Mushroom psytrance producers so make what you want out of it
-
OMG I had this track on an ooooold set from Manu Le Malin @ the Loveparade (back when they didn't ban hardcore from it...). It's always great to rediscover an old track you loved that's probably because it is AMBIENT, not goa...
-
well sorry for being a psyhead and not being into rock music As for the rating well I gave it a rather high rating because he's trying new things and IMO originality is a very important factor when rating an album. And like I said, once you're tired of the usual rolling bassline trademark psy sound, this is a welcome listen. But yeah, for people who have been into the scene for some time, I think that the main factor behind buying this album is force of habit as you say
-
haha that's not made by aliens, it's made by DEAMONS FROM HELL!!! Great track, I should get some more stuff from them
-
Ah well when I was a teen in the 90s I also believed that the music (what is called oldschool today) was made by gods or aliens (or both) and that was before I ever came close to psychedellic substances!! I really honestly could not imagine a human being making a track like AP - People Can Fly, it all seemed too fast, too layered, too complicated... That said, looking back, I think that this was more because I was an impressionable teenager than anything else. Also, actually fiddling around with some electronic music equipment kindof takes the magic out of it all, you realize that it's not THAT hard to do. I mean, I'm not saying it's easy either, but you realize that a lot of those tweaked out sounds are just random use of filters, LFOs and delays. Which doesn't mean that the artists behind aren't geniouses, but it all seems so "down to Earth" today compared to how I used to see this music a decade ago. Well, I guess the old saying is true: you should never meet your childhood heroes
-
yeah maybe we should pin this topic I don't think anyone ever has a final list cause tastes change through time but still, the tracks I've mentioned have been on my playlist for almost a decade and I STILL enjoy listening to them so I guess this is the closest I'll ever get to a final list And yeah a pitty that Luminus link doesn't work anymore I should start uploading stuff myself
-
cool, I'm definatley looking forward to listening new stuff by him

thank you for making me look like an ass

1. Fear Of The Dark (VIP Mix) (7:56) 2. Inti Zar (6:46) 3. Anoni (4:04) 4. Beyond (7:05) 5. Simple Mind (7:16) 6. Save Me (6:53) 7. Reach 2 Me (6:32) 8. Oxygen (6:55) 9. Beijar (6:59) 10. Do U Believe (6:54) 11. Xport (7:07) I know that I should stop living in the past and just live with the fact that neither Yahel or Phonokol will probably ever release anything worthwhile again since the demise of oldschool in 2000... but when I see an established oldschool name I just have to check it out So anyway as one would expect, nothing in this album even comes close to the oldschool sound for which Yahel and Phonokol used to be known for... except for some massive oriental influences in some tracks, although the end result is VERY different from the kind of oriental influences we're used to hearing in oldschool. But still, when you listen to it with an open mind you realize it's not all that bad The album starts off with Fear Of The Dark in which the main guitar melody hook is nothing else than a blatant ripoff of 1200 Mics - High Paradise and absolutley no credits are given to the original artists... I think someone will have an army of lawyers knocking on their door in a short while [EDIT: someone kindly pointed out to me that 1200 Mics themselves ripped it off Iron Maiden] Still, copyright issues set aside, this is a pretty nice interpretation of the theme. It actually has some female singing but if you think of it as some vocal trance it's not that bad. Inti Zar brings back some oriental melodies... but don't expect anything oldschool in there, this is a completly different interpretation of oriental melodies. It sounds more like some oriental pop dance track than anything else. Sometimes it is good, other times I feel it's going a bit overboard into commercial territory... Anoni has some eerie oriental female voices. Would you believe me if I told you that for a minute there this made me think of Indoor - Shiva? But I think it's more my imagination than anything else. And there is also a little melody starting 1:02 that sounds almost exactly like the rave classic Members of Mayday - Sonic Empire. Still, this is a nice tune and definatly one of the best on this album. Beyond is basically a vocal trance track and I must say that I have heard better vocal trance tracks out there... Interestingly enough this one uses the same synth presets as Sash - Encore Une Fois (but just the presets, not the melody thank God ) Simple Mind is... a simple track... not really anthing that catches my attention in there. Save Me is a more interesting experiment. It sounds like some sort of crossblend between commercial trance and goth (including the female voice). I can't say I like it but it is an interesting listen nonetheless. Reach 2 Me is a more conventional laid-back vocal trance track with some guitars a nice female voice and a less nice male voice ran through a vocoder. It reminded me a lot of Armin Van Buuren's new style. Beijar would actually be a good track if it wasn't for the singing. Do You Believe brings even more voices, this one actually made me think of some Depeche Mode lol Again, if it wasn't for the voices, this would've been much better IMO. XPort finally some more action There is a pretty catchy guitar riff in there, a nice track. The Good: Yahel is definatley experimenting with some new sounds, and also brings back some oriental sounds that will bring some good memories to any oldschooler like myself The Bad: Like always, Yahel is always aiming for a large commercially-oriented audience which kindof ruins some tracks (like for example adding cheezy vocals on top). Conclusion: I never really was a big fan of Yahel since the change in style from 2001 and this is no exception... But still, it is a nice listen when you're tired of the typical psytrance rolling-bassline sound 7/10

LMAO I bet those words are taken from some tibetan porn magazine

thanks everyone for sharing... I didn't know all of the tracks, it's always great to listen to great stuff you've missed out on
