Going to interview Mark Allen this weekend
Lemmiwinks replied to Goa Bill's topic in General Psytrance
Can you compare the scene today to how it used to be 15 years ago? Is it any better? Any worse? What do you think of the loss of connection between trance music and spirituality? What do you consider to be THE first goatrance track ever, the one that started it all? Who is your favorite artist (old and new)? Your favorite track (old and new)? If you had a magic time machine and could go back in time, would you still make the same decisions you did (musically-wise) or would you do someting different? And... WHEN WILL YOU RELEASE A NEW RTTS COMP????? -
yep it's Bruno Snchioni, he also made one of the first trance tracks ever with Age Of Love. He was also the dude behind Dr. Phibes (in case anyone remembers that one ) It's crazy the amount of talent that came out of Mouscron out of all places lol yes... Still, a pretty cool track though but because of that mistake Sideffect... will come burn his house now

Explaination of Goa/Psy Vs. [Regular] Trance
Lemmiwinks replied to Helios909 (rx7style)'s topic in General Psytrance
meh Digitaria isn't really representative of goa/ psytrance IMO... might as well play some Texas Fagott while you're at it -
ah thanks mate! Indeed most of those came from Bonzai, although they put out a lot of crap as well IMO... it's funny looking back on the scene how many different styles coexisted in the same clubs, it's unthinkable to have that today IMO
-
no, but it would be cool if such a store existed anyway regarding rating your own stuff high, just check out the way The Nommos usually sit on second place in Goa Gill's charts. He won't put them on no. 1 spot cause he's a modest baba

Explaination of Goa/Psy Vs. [Regular] Trance
Lemmiwinks replied to Helios909 (rx7style)'s topic in General Psytrance
nah it USED to be like that but the trend has been dead and burried quite some time ago on the commercial trance scene... hehe true... I used to be a goatrance "evangelist", raving to people how great this music is and how infinitly inferior all other music styles were. But most people didn't care, in the end I just learned to live with it -
Explaination of Goa/Psy Vs. [Regular] Trance

well it's all a matter of taste: either you like something and are interested by all the aspects or you don't and then it all falls under the "not interesting" genre. It's the same for me when talking about, say, jazz music: a jazz fan will start explaining me the difference between classic jazz and progressive jazz and whatnot and I'm like "WTF? it's all some random saxophone melodies anyway". -
glad to be of service Indeed, most of the basics of psytrance were layed by these guys way back in the 70s. No wonder their first album was named... Electronic Meditation

Well I've always been amazed by some really nice tunes in so-called "retro-house parties" here in Belgium. The DJs would play some crap and then all of a sudden a BEAUTIFUL trance track would play I'd be like "where the hell did that come from???". Searching for these tracks is pretty difficult cause most of them aren't specifically released as being trance, they're just put as "belgian techno" (as if that were a genre lol) Anyway, I've managed to track down some of my favorites, if anyone else can give me their inputs it would be cool DJ Philip - Too Deep CM - Dream Universe Phi Phi and Greg D - Jesus Trip The McKenzie - Without You Hitch Hiker and Dumont - Raindrops DJ Gert - Magic Symphony

OMG you mean the killer melody in Atlantis was NOT made by Perplex??? Now that you say it, it sounds logical cause it's basically the only "Perplex" track I find worth listening...
-
who's the real artist in that one?

Explaination of Goa/Psy Vs. [Regular] Trance
Lemmiwinks replied to Helios909 (rx7style)'s topic in General Psytrance
yes, most diehard psytrance freaks believe that but the reality is quite different... Like I said, these days I find some "non-psy" trance to be more underground and have more original ideas in it then some psytrance... -
I don't understand what you want... like I said, goatrance is something that slowly morphed from other genres. People in Goa listened to New Beat before trance, hence the links I've posted. You can hear an obvious connexion between New Beat and early trance records. Listen to the Konzept track... it has most of the elements that make the trademark goatrance sound, although it was New Beat. Also, in the beginning ALL trance was goa, the commercial movement eventually got a life of it's own in Europe, but the origins were all to be found in the hippie comminities in Goa and Ibiza... Hippies would travel around the World and bring back whatever music they found interesting and it just so happens that the most interesting music they found was New Beat. Trance eventually progressed from there. Then around 1993-1994 there was a clear split between "uncommercial" trance that eventually lead to the goatrance scene and more commercial club-oriented trance that lead to uplifting trance. But it was the commercial vibe that spawned from the undreground one, not the other way around...

yep I mentioned that in another post And no, I've looked all over the print on the record, there is not a single reference to Anne Clark in spite the fact that it was a blatant rip-off... but then again, this happens pretty often in electronic music: Snap ripped off Chill Rob G for the sample in The Power, they've never given any credit (or any money) the the artist even though the producers from Snap won worldwide recognition and millions of dollars with it...

Anne Clark - Sleeper in Metropolis (1985) The Neon Judgement - TV Treated (1985) A Splic Second - Flesh (1986) Acts of Madmen - The Dream (1987) The Caravan - Somewhere in Arabia (1987) KLF - What Time Is Love (Pure Trance Version) 1989 Acts of Madmen - What's The Matter (1988) Basic Two - Face to Mecca (1988) Amnesia - Ibiza (1988) Konzept - Hypnautic Beats (1990)

from another topic on the subject a while ago:

yes I agree... the best one can do is take a break from it all and explore other genres... then when you listen to psy again, even the most commercial full-on will sound fresh and interesting

Explaination of Goa/Psy Vs. [Regular] Trance
Lemmiwinks replied to Helios909 (rx7style)'s topic in General Psytrance
hehe good question... for me the most notable differences are: 1. the music is faster, more agressive and less "listener-friendly" 2. whereas most commercially-oriented music has only one lead that fades away and comes again, goatrance has many: it starts off with a certain lead, then changes, then changes again 3. it is music made to be listened to when high on acid/ mushrooms whereas most commercial trance has extacy/cocaine/ alcohol in mind. Thus there are a lot more "trippy" random sounds, also "hidden" sounds that don't really make sense or you don't really realize are there unless you're high. Hence the production is a lot "dirtier" (except for progressive psy which personally I don't really consider psy) as opposed to "clean" production that most club-oriented music has. 4. I guess that with recent psytrance you can also say that the rolling bassline has become a trademark as well Of course, with the rise of commercial full-on these differences (except for the last) are less ans less obvious, sometimes commercial trance might actually sound more underground then some full-on... -
I agree... but a little constructive criticism never hurt anyone
-
hehe well that's just the problem with electronic music: it always has to be fresh and move on. The same events happen eventually to EVERY artform, just that most of the time the rise and decay period will last for decades, even centuries. With electronic music it all happens in just a few years. IMO it just reflects our modern technology-oriented world...
-
oh yes indeed, I didn't intend my comment in that way... I know very well that you've never tried to push these albums in any way, I'm just saying that it's harder for reviewers to be 100% objective when they actually know the people behind the release. The same happens with OOOD releases cause Colin is an active member of the site IMO. well what made early trance (not only goatrance) special IMO was that artists decided to make something completly new. In today's world artists seem too obsessed with following formulas (oldschool formula, full-on formula, dark trance formula, etc...). I might be wrong but the way I remember it back in the old days there was a lot more room for "freeform" creativity compared to today's stuff. Which doesn't mean that I'm not pleasantly surprised by some new releases, I'm just saying so...
-
well believe it or not, there ARE valid reasons not to like Suntrip releases, my main problem with their stuff (except for Ka-sol who really tries out new paths) being that they try too hard to stick to one or other oldschool "formula". Sometimes the line between inspiration and plagiarism becomes pretty blurry in Suntrip land... Which doesn't mean I don't like their stuff, far from it but I can understand why someone who's been into the scene from the early 90s might not rate their stuff high. Also, would so many people on psynews rate Suntrip releases so high if they didn't know that the same people who created psynews are the ones who created Suntrip...? I don't mean to diss Anoebis and Mars' efforts and I DO like their stuff a lot but this has been a question that's been behind my mind for some time now...

The "Not as much love for IFO as everyone else" thread
Lemmiwinks replied to Veracohr's topic in General Psytrance
ah yes that's an interesting point of view That said, most goatrance from the days worked instantly on me (including IFO). Stuff that people considered "deeper" and that you needed more time for it to grow on you like (early) Juno Reactor and Koxbox I never really liked, even after many listens... -

hmm yes but what you're saying is how to ensure commercial success... dumbed-down music for dumbed-down people, whereas goatrance (at least in the early days) had somewhat of an "elite" feeling to it: you remember all those hipppie types going like "bleh get away with your stupid commercial music, I'm listening to GOAtrance", as if simply owning an Astral Projection CD made you intelectually superior or something... I know that the elitism is far gone from the scene today (well, when the main acts today are basically making pop music with a rolling bassline, what would you expect? lol). Ah well, anyway, I do not disagree with you, I just like splitting hairs -

OK, one can make a track with 2 layers that rocks and another can make one with 28 that sucks but still, technically it's harder to make one with 28 layers than one with 2, no? And you need more inpiration to find 28 layers which combine well and make something coherent, whereas just finding 2 layers that work well together requires relativley less inspiration, right?
