OOOPS... big mistake... I meant Olli Wisdom of course, sorry about that
-
then give me examples of "hyperlayered new stuff"... I'd definatley like to try out some of those
-
well... Ollie Olsen lives in the middle of the Australian jungle but you never hear people describe Space Tribe as "jungle trance" PS E-Mantra's track on Sinister Sunrise is killaaarghhh
-
well Psyfactor is new so it doesn't fall into the "multi-layering" category I don't know how to explain, surely you've noticed that modern psy just has one "clean lead" whereas in oldschool you have a lot of things going on in the background, giving it kindof a "confused" progression? Take for example Space Tribe - The Great Spirit (Hallucinogen Mix): you have like this main "theme" going on all throughout the track but when you pay close attention there are like a million other things happening at the same time in the background, and then at moments, the "main theme" kindof wanders off in details and then comes back again. This reflects the "spiral way of thought" one has when on acid IMO, don't really have words to explain... You know, kindof like watching a mandala or fractal when on acid: you see the whole picture then "wander off" into a part of a part of a drawing, seeing that that little detail is just as complex as the whole image, then at once you're "pulled off" and see the whole drawing as a whole again and you're like "woah man"... God how I miss tracks that give you that feeling

lol actually AFAIK only 2 Belgian artists released full albums: Concentrix and Lani... and I found that both kindof sucked Although I'm Romanian-born so maybe I'll never quite relate to psytrance before a Romanian artist releases a full-lenght psy album? hey this gives me an idea actually, maybe I'll gather the funds to release the first Romanian trance comp... call it something like "Vampire trance" since foreigners always associate Romania with vampires

[oops sorry, double-post...]

oh well that probably comes from the fact that the man initially asked for RECENT albums... of course if you go through 15 years of trance you'll find that the "definition" of certain genres changed quite drastically over the time. For instance here is an example of what was the definition of "dark" during the years: 1997: Hallucinogen - The Lone Deranger 1998: X-Dream - Radio 2000: The Delta - Send In... Send Back 2001: Parasense - Apple 2005: Ghreg on Earth - Sigilweaver as you can see, when put in context of other releases during the same year they can be defined as "dark" but compare one with the other and these are VERY different styles...
-
well yes and no... first of all, people say that old Ka-Sol and BotFB is "forest trance"... but when those tracks were released they were labled as "psytrance with industrial elements" (by D-Dave himself...), there wasn't a single word about "forest trance". I don't know man, it kindof sounds like people from today labeling Hallucinogen - The Lone Deranger as "dark trance" because the tracks have a dark feeling... Second of all I REALLY don't understand how people can see similarities between Derango and Ka-Sol but NOT between Derango and most dark trance artists. Third of all, what's the difference between the "scando sound" and "forest trance"...?
-
isn't that the problem with 99,9% of psy releases these days...?
-
hehe yeah I get what you're saying with the druggy thing... also the fact that I was a teen when discovering psytrance probably has something to do with it as well since when you're a teen your selection criterias aren't that developed and you don't have an extensive background to be able to compare with older stuff. BUT there is one huge difference between older stuff and new which IMO explains a lot: older stuff had a lot of layers. So even if you've listened to a track 100 times the 101th time you'd still hear some fogotten layer to which you didn't pay much attention before and be like "wow! I didn't even know that was there!". Today (a part for some VERY rare exceptions) that's totally not the case... Once you're done with the "main layer" there's nothing much left to discover so you discard and move to something else.
-
then explain me, Mr Smarty-pants... what special caracteristics distinguishes "forest trance" from other psytrance... everytime I've asked that question people just wandered off and never could produce a coherent answer, other than "well, you know, it sounds.... wierd...". But maybe you will be the first to enlighten me?
-
yeah... kindof like the "stupid people" who didn't understand the Emperor's new clothes...? Sorry, don't get me wrong, I am waiting for this album in high anticipation since I just loved Ka-Sol's older stuff and his live sets, but will people please cut this "forest trance" crap? it means NOTHING...
-
This is what I usually say about the difference between old and new psy: before you'd just go to the "goatrance" section of your CD shop (if you were lucky enough to find such a thing lol), randomly pick up a comp and you were sure to like it, or at least 2/3s of the tracks on it... now it's like you have to dig through a pile of 2 tons of shit to find something worthile... and when you finally do it doesn't necesarily stay with you, you get bored with it in a few days/ weeks and need something else. Whereas I know my classics for YEARS now yet still take pleasure in listening to them. Thus old is better than new But of course like most of you said, that doesn't mean I don't like ANYTHING new, luckily there are still some interesting releases out there (mostly in dark psy for me)
-
heh that "genre" is just an excuse for you to promote Artifakt I'd definatley not call his style "psy"...

-
here we go with the "best album of 2006" again... when will you people learn that one can't really make that statement until the last months of 06?
-
well the ones that come closest IMO are Psykovsky and Ghreg on Earth, also on a smaller scale Psyfactor
-
how bout this one: Zyon - No Fate (Back From Ghoa Mix) ?
-
I doubt you've heard ALL of them...
-
hah well I'm lucky enough to have bought a HUGE pile of records and CDs mostly with old trance from the early 90s... so for now I'm too busy discovering lost gems on B-sides to be bothered about 2006 releases anyway
