commercial: stuff like Sven Väth - L'Esperanza; Energy 52 - Café Del Mar un-commercial: stuff like Exposure To Little Electronic Noises - Precaution; Greyhouse - New Beats the House (mind you this was made in 1989!)

Antwerp = home of Nova Zembla records which was THE record label where early "serious" trance was released (don't get me wrong, I have much respect for German trance lables as well, but somehow those have always been on the more commercial side of things... with some exceptions of course Gent= home of R&S Records, again a LOT of early techno classics were released there. BUT Belgium was especially known as the capital of industrial/ new beat which is the main genre from which trance "morphed" later on. Which is probably why you can find most very early trance stuff on Belgian record lables. The next logical step would've been for Belgium to be the world capital of trance... but that never happened... I really don't understand why it never picked up from the "post-industrial-pre-trance" period
-
Well some would say that Ghent and Antwerp played a significant role as well
-
well to see what came from where you can always visit Ishkur's music guide
-
well technically early trance WAS synthpop and new beat that eventually evolved to gain its own identity as a genre so I guess it all depends on just how old those tracks are...
-
just randomly browsing on discogs to keep up with some classics and I stumble on this: DJ Dag - 20 Years Of DJ Madness "In June 2005 DJ Dag celebrates his 20th DJ anniversary. For this reason he mixed 2 CD´s with classic tracks, which were played during his career." oh baby this must be good... for the record, Dance 2 Trance (one of his projects) - We Came in Peace was considered as one of THE first trance tracks ever I wonder what gems are in there...
-
ah fuck I only read this now and I'm no longer a mod anyway, I guess his post was more of a joke than being serious... just to add that I'm only 25... is it that old? and the "new wave" usually means "the most apealing music to the masses"... which is the exact contrary of uncommercial music which is what goatrance was supposed to be in the first place. So excuse me if I prefer sticking to my oldschool...
-
off-topic but just as I was randomly strolling through the web to find more articles on beatmatching I find this quote on Ishkur: LOL!
-
thanks for the infos the thing I don't really get is the use of the jog wheel which is aparently so all-important: it's pretty easy to imagine how one nuges a bit the vinyl to spin faster/ slower but how do you "nuge" with the jogwheel??? Also a word on the master-tempo: doesn't that alterate the pitches of BOTH decks at the time? It would be awkward to slow down/ accelerate the track which is playing out loud, no? PS beatmixing really shows you why DJs love minimal music so much: it's so much easier to beatmatch when nothing much is going on in a track except the kick
-
ok, after a few more listens this sounds pretty decent after all... but still I wouldn't say it's the best release of the year on anything. Bottom line is that this album just sounds too "flat", there are no climaxes, breakdowns or anything to make you want to jump out of your chair and dance. I guess that it's best use is to listen to as background music or when driving...
-
ok ok I know, everybody wants to be a DJ, right? Ah so what, I've decided that after years of simply listening to music in my bedroom I'd like to start fooling around with some DJ gear and see what this beatmatching thing is all about. I've got one of those Hercules USB DJ soundcards (I gather there's no use in investing 1500+ euros in high end gear when I'm not even sure I have any talent). Of course, as one would expect, I don't get this beatmatching thing at ALL!! I've looked over a few tutorials on the net but still it all seems pretty fuzzy to me. So any recomendations for a noob?
-
ah well guess we all move on at some point in life Well at least promise that you won't replace your summer festivals with going to Disneyland for the kid's sake and yeah, have a great time with your project dude, those tracks you sent me are killaaargh (in the good sense of the word, I mean)
-
indeed this is one VERY underestimated oldschool album. I've already reviewed it years ago under my mail eden.solaris@caramail.com... after all these years I must say that this album still keeps it's sparks. Of course, it's not on par with time-tested classic like IFO or Trust in Trance . But still a pretty potent album, if you're into oldschool you MUST get your hands on this!! PS Psygone himself came on this very forum a while ago saying that he felt he was left behind in the scene, that his oldschool sound wasn't "in" anymore... I say: who cares!! I'd be happy to hear new releases from this dude!! Also he said that he might release a second album... hope he does!!!

first of all the link doesn't work, and the explanations are in Russian... second of all it's written "Total Eclipse - Aliens" on the full version of the track (but since the link doesn't work I can't listen to it to tell you if it's the right track...)
-
yeah and I bet that bet will just so happen to be broken the night when she comes so she'll have no other choice than to sleep in your bed Reminds me of my teen years
-
man, it doesn't get any more housey than this... if I want house music, I'll listen to stuff released by a house label, thank you very much. But then I'd probably wouldn't be on this site in the first place...
-
oh crap... as usual, a very good oldschool artist realizes he can rake in some $$$ if he makes something more club music oriented... and also rake in some $$$ by going under an established name when it's only half of what the group actually was. Do I like it? Hell no!!! Jaïa wasn't supposed to make fucken "smooth progressive music" in the first place. Yes, another one bites the dust. To all people praising this album so much: I really recomend you take out Blue Synergy out of your shelves, dust it off and give it another listen and THEN tell me if you find this so good... 5/10 from me... an average mark for an average album... PS at least if you want to make club music go under a different name please...
-
ah how times change... I remember that I LOVED this album back then... but now I couldn't care less, I actually find it VERY average, same goes for the first 2 Medicine Drum albums (and while we're at it, I found their 3rd one was a DISGRACE to psytrance)... ah well...
-
thanks for the recomendation Stalker but I actually have Robot-o-Chan (don't really consider that as being "new"...) and can't really say I like it... it all sounds "soulless" to my ears. However I might just give it another listen while we're at it... And to put an end to the Kindzadza discussion: I said that I found his new album (Kindzadza and friends) to be MUCH better than the first album which I didn't really like... that said, out of this year's darktrance crop I prefer Para Hallu and Ocelot But yes, I'm a morning freak, I crave some good oldschoolish melodies more than anything else
-
ah come on let's face it, LSD and Teleport had a pretty big commercial appeal as well... at least as much as Age of Love and Cafe del Mar. And don't forget that the mid 90s were MUCH more electronic-music oriented than the mid 00s.
-
no no no... indeed the metaphor comparing this to a comet coming to Earth is true. You see, every once in a few years, the "main scene" seems to realize that there is this genre called "psytrance". They try to popularize it but then after a few months they forget all about it and go on with other genres. This happened in 96 (MWNN - Teleport WAS playing on MTV!!! and Hallucinogen's LSD had a 3 minute radio edit). Actually I'm surprized by the regularity of it all: we're almost exactly 10 years from that period.
-
ah yes pretty cool album, actually one of my top 03 picks, Love to Hate is a VERY nice and original track, blending in some rock music, but not too much, just what's needed. And with Noodle Doodle we can hear Parasence doing... morning trance! Although I prefer their dark stuff. Alas this album doesn't have much value for me 2 years later (writing this in 2005) and in the meantime other dark trance artists like Ocelot showed up even more originality and mean basslines. 8/10
-
so I have to shamefully admit that I haven't listened to any new psytrance for about 2 months now... was thinking of "getting back in the game" but would like to start off with something really special. So any suggestions in new releases?
-
hey now I can see why one would find Apsara predictable (although anything BUT boring): it uses the same oldschool formulas... but then again, what's that compared to the tons and tons of releases who use the full on or dark trance formulas? Or the "progressive psy" releases who limit themselves to copying fucking club music? But anyway, unlike other tracks on the Apsara comp, Ka-Sol truly is 100% innovation, I dare you to find a SINGLE oldschool melody or synth preset in there. It brings back the oldschool feeling because it's wild, energetic and has a lot of layers but it doesn't sound anytyhing like other oldschool. Hence it's the best 05 release for me. But of course, tastes can differ, obviously...
-
I never said it was the best ever... I said it was the best of 05... so far... big difference and no, friendship has nothing to do with it (proof being that I bought my copy fair and square, if we were such good friends, they could've at least gave me a copy for free, no?). It has more to do with the fact that we share the same tastes in music (oldschool)
