well there, I pinned this topic here in the music making part since after all it's you people who are mostly concerned So let me know people what are your thoughts, I wouldn't want this idea just to die off like that...
-
Well I guess that a good starting point would be to know what happened to the first psynews comp. How many copies did it sell? How much every artist got in return? How did they think up the profit distribution? Was there any profit at all?
-
Well I've given this some thought and thanks to Spindrift's input here's the deal: aparently an investment of around 300 euros is enough to have a low-profile CD-R release (like Schlabbaduerst Rekkords and Reason at Hearth do). I could easily finance that out of my own pocket... So if the contest goes ahead, I (or we if mars and co. want to be part of the project) could make a label entitled... "Psynews Records" or "Psynews.org Records" and release the winner tracks. Don't expect massive sales but people who would want the tracks on CDs (and like moni said, the psynews name does have it's fans ) can have them. Now my main question is this: how to split up the revenus? Spindrift told me that once all the costs covered it leaves around 6,50€ for the artists per sold CD... and keep in mind that if this sells 2- 300 copies (in all, not per month) we should be happy... This means that at best (and I mean really best) this would bring around 2000 euros for artists. (but DO keep in mind that 300 copies is a very optimistic assumption, this could just as well sell 50 copies...). Now if this was a single artist release it would be good but since it will be a comp, money will be divided to different artists... If there are say 9 tracks, that would bring 0,72 Euros per sold CD to each artist thus 215 Euros per artist in best case scenario... This is peanuts and most of you probably get more than that per month out of wellfare... This also explains why a double-CD release would be even worse (then the profits would be divided by 18 instead of 9)... Personally I'm willing to work for peanuts because I love this site and find it deserves some investment in time and money to bring it to a higher level... but will participating artists agree with the terms as well? Anyway, tell me what you think about it.

*copy-paste from my review* IMO it makes people unfamiliar to Shpongle get a big big misconception on their music. The average listener buying this EP because some trance music vendor told him it was "hip" will walk away thinking that Shpongle is some sort of trendy artists fusing salsa with electronica like that Samba Di Janeiro track which hit the charts in 2000. But Shpongle is so much more... Also if Sasha proclaimed it to be the best track of 2003 then... I think you understand why some psytrancers aren't too happy about it...
-
what you mean the bassline in the beginning? Yeah that kindof sounds like it... still I was expecting the synthline to sound like Kylie or something... it's still acceptable IMO (and the best track on this album)
-
God is in the details, my friend OK, I'll stop talking now...
-
they did??? who???
-
yeah that were pretty much my thoughts as well hence my reluctancy to pin it... but if it makes you people happy then so be it Personally I never liked the concept of chatting...
-
blame Inseijn for it
-
well that one's relatively easy... all you'd have to do is send emails to the lables with the link to the section inviting them to have a listen...
-
ok I don't know much about how this stuff works in practice but I have a feeling that usually a label has a general idea of how the sound should be and sign up artists who do stuff in that manner. Now the main problem I see with a contest is simply that the persons who judge and the persons who release aren't the same... So on one hand you'll have judges who will like evaluating the tracks but won't want to get money out of their pockets to release them and people (lables) who have the money but won't want to release something they don't really like under their name... For me the easyiest solution would be simply to promote the stuff and have lables who like it release it. There will be no judges (except the lables themselves) and no usual bells and whistles attached to the whole "contest" concept... but on the other hand, instead of just going around in circles this could actually lead to something...
-
Well personally I'm not into music making but if I was then I'd definatley NOT want to pay to have people listen to my music and I'm sure a lot of people think like that too. I mean, most artists aren't happy when people leech their stuff for free... now they'd have to PAY? Now the most easily feasible thing to do would be simply to have a section on this site linking to tracks made available and every artist should host their stuff themselves (pretty easy if all you have is a track or 2)... there would be no contest, no CD... but also no costs and it could be setup in a few hours. After all the main idea is getting big lables interested in your work, no? What use is having some 16 year-old kid judge your tracks if he has no connections?
-
there I pinned it after massive lobbying... happy now?
-
well you see that's the problem with most people who don't like this CD IMO... they simply don't have the patience to listen through it all so they just listen the first few minutes, then fast forward, listen to the vocal part and then push "stop"... that's certainly NOT the way to experience it. If Juno made this one hour long it was for a reason... the way people "listen" to it (with the aid of the fast forward button) it's like seeing a bungee jump on TV and then saying that it's not that interesting... of course you won't find it interesting if you don't experience the real deal yourself!!!

1. Natti Natti 2. Peripherics 3. Season 5 4. Undertow 5. Gatewick (vinyl airport delay) 6. Dew (herbal version) 7. Chrysalis 8. Onset data 9. Forest fish 10. Suspended grounds Was listening to this one again recently after about 2 years... When it was released it was one of my top chill-out pics from 2003... however this is 2005 now and looking back it wasn't THAT great. BUT there is one exception: the track Season 5 is a MASTERPIECE!!! It just seems to dig in deeper and deeper every time (and that's even after years of listening!!). Definatley one of the best chill-out tracks EVER!! I guess other tracks will be apreciated too by a new listener but they just don't do it for me anymore If you can find it second-hand the Season 5 track is definatley worth it
-
well I was thinking about putting up a subforum in the Music Making dedicated to new tracks by members and feedback... it wouldn't be a contest but at least anyone who wants to find new talent will see all the available tracks in one shot, without having to search for them. What do you think of that?
-
same here!! well what can I say? I've had this for a LONG LONG time and I must say it is a very unique experience. First of all, you need the TIME to listen to it. It is one track that lasts for a whole hour so it's not like you'll apreciate it if you popped the CD in for a few minutes while brushing your teeth or in your car when going to the gorcery. You also need to be in the mood for dark ambient. I must also say that I didn't think much of this album on first few listens. But I must tell you that when you have the time and patience and are in the right mood, this will make MIRACLES! It's like the music (or more like sounds) BECOME your thoughts, you kindof forget the music and just start thinking unhappy things and then from time to time you remember that you're listening to music (and that it's probably the music which is doing that to your brain...). In other words, it's TRANCE in the true meaning of the word... There's a mechanical feeling all throughout the track, I remember someone saying that it feels like being in a huge freight train at night or in the engine room of some old ship sailing through the fog. And BTW am I the only one seeing similarities between the vocal part (which is actually the part I like least...) and the track Rebekah del Rio - Llorando? (you know that girl who sings in that freaky theater and then collapses on the stage in Mullholland Drive by David Lynch) So to sum it up... it's an experience! Yes, not a track, not music, an EXPERIENCE! And like any experience in life, you'll only judge it as positive if you're up for it. For me this is more psychedellic (in the true sense of the word) than 99% of releases by psytrance producers (BTW should I also mention that this concept of a loooong ambient track seems very similar to what fathers of "old psychedellia" Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schultze did back in the 60s and 70s?) so 9/10 from me... a real classic but like I said, you have to be ready for the experience... if you just want to feel good on some downtempo vibes then Shpongle is the thing for you.. Now if only Juno thought of doing a follow-up to this great timeless masterpiece...

off topic, but I was just listening that Eat Static track with the sample "Let them eat static !" in it when reading your post. One of those synchronicity things
-
now let's not get over the top now... some of it is good but some of it just sounds like random stuff on top of a world music CD...
-
ah yes this one just grows on me more and more each day! After a while I didn't listen to it anymore and then I put it in my CD player again about a month ago... and it sounded like 100 times better than at first!! This truly is my top 2004 pic
-
Yeah I miss em too They "released" a track on the comp There is No Tomorrow in 2004 but they say it was already old material...
-
Well I remember being rather dissapointed by Etnica- Photonic (which was supposed to be released under the Pleiadians name). But a few months later I found it EXCELLENT! Not the "in your face style" typical of old Pleiadians but still a VERY good track which made me "travel". So I can't wait to hear this track

For people claiming this to be oldschool: take your old AP or Transwave CDs out of your dusty shelfs and listen to them again... THEN tell me if this is oldschool goa... To me this is one more album in what I call the "NES psy" genre (like Lani and Vibe Tribe). Sometimes it can be good, no doubt about that (example being track 3, 4 and 6) but most of the time it's pretty average IMO. The thing is that most tracks seem too "light" or somehow not serious enough. I was expecting to get some great blend between oldschool melodies and new production and ended up with a pretty average "NES psy" album 6/10 Still, there are some tracks that are well worth it

couldn't come... bummer Was looking forward to The Lost Buddha's set

First of all... UX DARK?!? Second of all... UX CLASSIC?!? Let's face it, there are some pretty portent tracks in there (especially Masters of the Universe) but... there are albums out there that are far better and deserve the "classic" title more fully IMO.
