  2. i'm preety fed up with cubase - buggy and sometimes preety difficult and slow to use. tbh, i use like 20% of the features. so i'm looking for an alternative. there's sonar 6 (http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/) which has a really impressive set of features (that i could actually find myself using them), but it may seem a bit "big" and slow to use, cubase style. there's ableton live which is nice because it is getting great reviews and it can be used both as a writing tool and a performing tool. also nice features in it. a new version for tracktion is coming soon (http://www.mackie.com/products/tracktion3/splash.html) which seems really great according to the videos. i really like the "all in one window" working style. an interesting piece of software is also podium (http://www.zynewave.com/) which seems preety new and still totally ugly but the vids look promising, although i'm not sure what it can give me that i don't have yet. any experiences with those progs? hows the sound engine etc etc? i'll probably try to write a track with each...
  3. where is it from anyway? btw, gotta agree about the "boom shankar" and the "wood chuck wood" samples

  5. how do you know he's playing anything at all? the unit seems to be turned off to me.
  6. how much is "cheaper"? numbers learning the speakers is ok, until a limit. i own tannoy reveal and i know them preety well, but i also know where they suck so i still can't mix properly on them. looking forward for adam p11 in the future. if your monitors are good and you get a good mix on them, then it's a good mix. an engineer has to be sure that whatever he makes is good. that's the point of monitors. it's hard to achieve on less then top notch monitors though. also takes a lot longer to mix on crappy monitors to reach the same result with good monitors. with bad ones it may sound wrong but you may not be sure what is wrong, with good ones it sort of written on the wall what's wrong
  7. most cables today come in 3 forms: rca which looks like this: phone-phono-trs-1/4"-pl-bananaplug-whatver which looks like this: xlr: from my own personal experience, just about every home stereo fi hi gear use rca. low end "pro" soundcards also use rca. low end home sound cards use 1/8". high end pro audio use 1/4" & xlr. basically, there is no better thing. maybe xlr is better because it is more durable. after all, the electrons don't really care which medium they go through as long as it's good quality. there's good rca and crap rca for that matter. there is also the issue of balanced cables, which is a technology that uses 3 contact points intead of 2 to eliminate some noise, google for it. rca supports it (i think), xlr supports it for sure (being a connection with 3 pins) and the 1/4" jacks support it if it's a mono signal which comes in a trs form. trs = tip ring sleep, which means there are 3 contact points (like in the pic here). some cables are only tip and sleep, which means they are mono unbalanced. trs can be either stereo or balanced. speakers will not work without an amplifier. headphones included. there is no point connecting headphones directly to the "line out" connectors of the soundcard because you will not hear a thing, or you will hear it almost silent. you can either connect the sound card to an amplifier/receiver/anythingwithaheadphoneoutput or just use a soundcard which has one (like mine - motu ultralite). again, same goes for speakers. speakers don't have any input on them, rca, trs or xlr. they only have holes or ports for twisted cables like this: this cables are used to take the amplified signal from an amplifer to the speaker. most desktop speakers come with subwoofer combined with an amplifier in one box, and 2 small speakers. this is bad for music production! the sound will suck so much you wouldn't be able to hear what you're doing. if you're short on budger you can get cheap active studio monitors, active meaning they have a built-in amplifier, so basically they can take a connection directly from your sound card. i wouldn't recommend headphones to produce music.
  8. imo you should produce only with monitors, not with headphones.
  9. let me explain. first of all - there is no such thing as digital speakers, of any kind. if there is something called a "digital speaker" then maybe it can accept digital inputs, but then it gets converted to analog. the moving parts in the speakers don't know how to play 0's and 1's, only an analog wave signal. now, about studio monitors and the rest. regular speakers are designed to sound "preety", according to taste. that is - they emphasize certain frequency ranges and lower some others to give the speaker a certain "color". so lets say you're writing a track on a sound system with low trebles and a boomy subwoofer. because of the lower trebles you won't hear them properly, which can results in all kinds of errors in the mix - too much or the opposite for example. the boomy subwoofer will cause you to not know if you don't have enough bass. it will sound boomy anyway because of the subwoofer. studio monitors (at least the good expensive ones) have a near flat frequency response, which means that whatever you make will (theoritically) sound good on any other system. the second aspect of studio monitors is the accuracy of sound reproduction. let's say you have an error in your mix. a sudden peak when having 2 hi-hats together or something. a not good speaker, even if it has a good freq response will not be able to reproduce this peak. some speakers will, some won't. if you have monitors you will hear it and be able to fix it so it will sound good on all speakers. there is much more to write but i think you got the idea. good luck!

  15. nice mixing what did you do there? 2-3 tracks at once? wanna share some techniques?
  16. impressive mix ! a few things though... use the MT function (assuming you were using pioneers) when moving the jog wheel, so the pitch changes wouldn't be there. it sounds so awful other than that - nice mixes! good track selection. i enjoyed it.
