at first I felt that way after just the 1st 2 tracks but then the next three unfolded gloriously, I'm still not blown away by tracks 6 & 7 as they don't quite have the same brilliance as the 1st 5 tracks but the last track is a treat This one did take a bit of effort to understand like most ultimae releases

Mathias Grassow & Thomas Weiss Insights Databloem 2007 Tracklist 1 In (7:23) 2 Circles (13:55) 3 Whole Pulse (17:01) 4 Language Of Silence (9:15) 5 Sights (13:43) These 2 German ambient maestros were unbeknownst to me before I bought this album but I bought it anyway on the strength of the Databloem brand. Yes databloem is one label that I can buy from blindly & always get some thoughtful ambient brilliance that at first I will find boring but then with some time, effort & focus I will find utterly amazing. So, did that happen here? Let's see. 1. In We start off with a lush ambient number with a nice drone throughout & ethereal voices coming out of the darkness. There is not a whole lot of substance to it but it is the kind of ambience that draws you in & that you can easily get lost in. 2. Circles The more percussive circles has the same droning ambience in the foreground but has some tribal beats in the background. Nice to have it that way a round so you have to focus to feel the beats. The beats seem steady but under closer inspection evolve slowly gaining more energy & they really feel like they are building to something. What it actually builds up to is a sonic downpour of ambience! The sounds in the end of this track really feel like the pouring of electronic rain on a cold dark winter day. 3. Whole Pulse Circles seamlessly slips into this whole pulse & it really lives up to it's name. The drone pulses slightly giving this ambient movement. The cold wind that blows behind the drone is so real that I actually get chills listening to it. That really is all there is to this track which you think might be incredibly boring as it goes on for 17 minutes but amazingly I stay interested throughout the whole duration. The tone of the drones move up & down just slightly enough to jolt the brain waves & the wind changes ever so slightly into a more solar sound and right at the death becomes a more high pitch fire in the darkness. It keeps pushing at the membrane but in a nice relaxed way that makes this a very dreamy sleepy track. 4. Language of Silence Seamless again into this track. Very much a continuation of Whole Pulse but has a little more going on. Sounds buzz & twinkle in this track, under the drone seems to be life in the outer reaches of nothingness. In the vastness of space between planets there is not much but in this track there seems to be at least single cell life. Something that the light bounces off of. A very nice floaty track, feels like I'm orbiting a huge star at a distance of over 100Au. So just in the distance can I see one light just brighter than the rest, but not obvious. Very cool Spacey ambient. 5. Sights A slightly more melodic track to finish with, with soft squelchy oscillating synths & a really bright atmosphere. I feel like the long journey through this alien space has suddenly come to it's final stage. We have passed through the out reaches of deep space between worlds, passed the outer & inner solar system & are now entering the suns corona but rather than the hot fiery death you might expect we are treated to a soft warmth surrounding us as we float around the star. The striking synth sounds that oscillate upwards feel like solar flares off to each side of my journey. A wonderful bright way to finish this journey through spacey ambient sounds. This release will be classified as many as a complete yawn fest & believe me, a large proportion of people are not going to like this. It's not melodious, there is not much rhythm in it & the beats are non existent. This is pure ambience. It creates an atmosphere of floating through space & into a sun. If you are a fan of spacey drone ambient with little in the way of anything but which manages to create a great sound. Put this on, close your eyes, remove any outside distractions & let it float you away into a slow journey in space between the stars. The bleakness of outer space is summed up in this album. Dark nothingness with pinholes of brilliant light. Incredibly psychedelic if you give it a chance

Solar Fields EarthShine Ultimae Nov 2007 Tracklist 1 Summer (8:31) 2 Kick Back (8:53) 3 Black Arrow (10:02) 4 Brainbow (11:22) 5 Spectral Nation (12:02) 6 Adjustment (9:49) 7 February (9:42) 8 Cruise (9:05) 2 years ago Solar Fields aka Magnus Birgersson released 2 albums at the same time Leaving Home and Extended & both albums in my ears were as close to perfect as I have ever heard since the heady days when I first discovered Goatrance with Project II Trance & my first experiences into ambient music with The Infinity Project - Mystical Experiences. So to recreate the same kind of awe as I felt when I first got into the scene was impressive. Those were ambient & almost beatless ambient. I compared them with mystical experiences & they held up well. So when I heard that Solar Fields would release an upbeat album I was amazed & I suddenly started thinking it could make me feel like those original goatrance days did. I know Magnus has the skills but will this style be as impressive as his ambient? Well, lets take a look... 1. Summer We start off with the transition from Leaving Home to EarthShine with an ambient intro leading into a slower than the rest 120BPM. The intro is promising with lush drippy sounds on bamboo & Himalayan sounding cords. When the synths lead into a tribal rhythm before the beats you can feel a sense of potential & when the beat finally kicks in on 3 minutes it's a nice steady beat, not too prominent that it dominates the whole track but obviously not subtle. This beat fits in well with Solar Fields style of spacey ambience & gives it a boost. This the kind of track I wish all progressive psy could be like. It has soul, depth & a lot of interesting sounds & melody too. The basslines are very subtle but make this, although slow, a track you could easily dance to. The melody progresses slightly but noticeably & it's just a shame it has to end. 2. Kick Back Straight in with the beat & straight in with little melodic runs which sound, I have to say, magical. Some of the best melody I've heard in ages & the fact that each time it comes in it's so short & then goes, it feels like I'm being teased. I sit here waiting for it to come in next. I'm so busy waiting that I miss, the synths starting but when I finally hear them & the bassline I am once again in awe. This is really how psy at this pace should sound. Beautifully spacey with a lot of space for the sounds to breath. The steady 4-4 is not oppressive which is such a relief as I was worried that a too heavy kick would be the downfall of this album but Magnus in my eyes is a genius when it comes to music & he's produced a bloody brilliant track here. When the melody morphs into a what reminds me of an old school trance (not psy) classic but yet not, I feel a sense of nostalgia while being so happy with the state of modern music. The atmosphere created in the final run sees this track move so incredibly deep I almost weep with joy. This, without a doubt must be one of the best tracks released this year, in any genre. 3. Black Arrow Atmospheric again with spacey whooshing sounds and another beat, which is a bit faster again at 138BPM. Again though, the kick is not oppressive and doesn't take over the track. Rather the beat works with the rest of the music to give it energy. By this point all my fears that the pace would kill Solar Fields' music have been killed & I'm really now enjoying this piece of up beat ambient. That is the only way I can think to describe this. Take away the beat & you'd probably have a really good ambient track but amazingly the beat added just manages to create an atmosphere of racing through hyperspace as mathematical equations rush by you at light speed. About 5 and a half minutes in the kick becomes a little stronger & threatens to take over but some nice tribal sub beats lie nicely & as the bassline becomes more involved the kick fades back to what it was before & we are treated to an oscillating sound like a mind being teleported through the ether to an alien world far away with a massive sound system & a festival of epic proportions where they are playing this & every race in the galaxy that is beautiful enough to have discovered music has gathered to enjoy this cacophony of joyous sound. Right at the end, there are again some old school trance influences in the final synth line. Very Very Nice. 4. Brainbow The intro has little short stabs of acid bombarding the now crippled defenses of my cynicism. I have to admit that now I am in love with this music & want to have it's babies. As the beat kicks in I feel a small drop in my appreciation but when that melody comes in I just want to fall to the floor in joy. It's difficult to describe just how this melody sounds but it feels like it is covering me. All around me is a beautiful fog of music representing this music. It hums & chimes & rings & echoes through the smoke rings of my inner being & far out into the ether of the universe. When it leaves I feel the darkness with the light acid sounds lighting up the black sky. The melody creeps back in however with the re:emergence of the beat I had not noticed for the last few minutes. The times with the melody are almost orgasmic & those times when it's not there leave you waiting for it, wanting it, desiring it to enter your mind again & bring you the light & the colour that has been missing from your life. Am I getting across just how good this melody is? It is a pretty simple melody but damn it's infectious & if it was a woman I think I would already have proposed. The bassline in the final part of the track is a nice driving one & fits round the melody while the spacey goodness of all the other sounds just blow my mind deep into the wondrous hyperspace of music created by Solar Fields. Mind Blowing!! 5. Spectral Nation We are greeted right from the start by a beautiful melody that sounds like it's coming out of an Asian mist. Think like you are sat in the early morning in China, your porch overlooks a lake & the dawn mist is creeping up off the lake into your house. When the beat kicks in, it's a fast beat but manages not to spoil the atmosphere created. Instead it just seems to make the house disappear, to become lost in the smoke. The beat & the bassline intertwine perfectly with the misty ambience of the rest of the music. The only other thing to say about this is that at over twelve minutes there was the possibility of this track becoming boring, but even though the atmosphere & the sounds stay the same. The track manages to stay interesting throughout. Very surreal music for dreaming on rainy days. The melodious sounds to end just feel like my brainwaves are being sent into the outer reaches of space by listening to this. 6. Adjustment Right into a steady kicking beat again with ethereal sounds floating hither & thither. The spacey feeling that has permeated this whole album so far seems to be reaching a pinnacle. I've talked about journeys through hyperspace before but this track seems to be just that. Imagine if you would, the light created by a star wars' craft making that jump into hyperspace & you get the feeling of the ambient noise surrounding this track. Add to that the kick of the drum & you get the speeding feeling as the sounds rush by you. Of all the album so far this probably my least favourite track as the kick is allowed somewhat to take over. It's a bit too prominent & therefore detracts from my enjoyment a little bit. It doesn't completely oppress the music though & I can appreciate the rest of the music but I just with the beat was a little more refined than it is. Nice little sub beats permeate towards the end but after a while they too are drowned out by the kick drum. 7. February A bass driven opening with another ultra trippy spacey sound oscillating through it. The hints at melody in the beginning plus the sudden bursts of volume seem at first a little strange but they really manage to build suspense. The beats were already there but they still manage to kick (back) in after a few minutes, like you are noticing them for the first time. The clear crisp sound of the beats & the ambient synths the whoosh through the background & the faster synths that create a melody in the mid section are top notch as are the forest fairy tale sounds that make up the ending. Still I can't help feeling that this track is lacking something to give it that feeling of brilliance experienced earlier in the album. It's a good track but just not up to the standards set earlier in this album. Close but no cigar! 8. Cruise A sublime ambient drone with a touch of melody in the background makes me feel everytime like this is going to be an ambient outro but as the beats trip in, that feeling drips away & is finally broken when the heavy bass stabs in & the beat, which now seems to have the foot eased off the pedal kicks in. The sound is back to the best heard on the album with the old school trance influences again. The synth build ups & the rave like break down putting me in the mood for some huge outdoor party 12 years ago but the melody rooting me right into 2007. Imagine a melodious rave track minus the cheesy cartoon sample plus modern production & you have this cruise. Bloody brilliant it is, the build ups are actually tense while being relaxing. Like waiting for something you really want while experiencing the next best thing. Sitting on a bean back waiting for someone to pass you the joint type stuff. This manages to sneak in the energy. You wait for a drop & suddenly it has just gone nuts without you realising it. A nice ending. Well, this is some damn good trance right here. Magnus Birgersson has managed to fuse his wonderful ambient sound with a trancey beat. He has also managed to make the beat not take over the tracks so you can still appreciate the music that goes along with it. All the sounds, the beat, the bass, the melody, the synths all seem to fit nicely. Only 2 tracks, adjustment & february are disappointing but when I say disappointing it is only in relation to this album. Both are very good tracks standing alone but they just don't reach the heady heights of the other 6 beauties on display here. So while not a perfect album & not coming quite as close to perfect as his two releases in 2005, this is a damn good album & one of my favourite up beat albums in 2007

Sattel Battle Sounds Cool Gi'iwa Productions Jan 2007 Tracklist 1 Sounds Cool (5:41) 2 Dosomethingwithyourlife (4:48) 3 Rabel Rabel (4:59) 4 Sratim Metzuyarim (5:19) 5 Work In Space (5:08) 6 Hey Hop (5:22) 7 Ghat Whore (5:13) 8 Strangless (4:42) 9 Homegrown (5:09) 10 2 Step Chase (5:32) 11 Fuck It (6:16) 12 24 Shots (6:15) 13 Sky Divers (+ 4 minutes silence + bonus track) (15:15) I bought this early this year after hearing how refreshingly different it was & how it was not just your identikit trance that is so popular nowadays. My first impression was, yeah it was different but it didn't get much play time & I totally forgot about it. After buying Sienis - From A Nutter Perspective, I gave this another try as it was on the same record label & it was so much better than I remembered. Fresh, yes. Different, Yes. Weird, Yes. From the opening track Sounds Cool we are transported to a futuristic medieval fun land. The melody puts me in minds of a medieval jousting match performed & watched by robots. Dosomethingwithyourlife meanwhile gives us a nice squelchy bassline. Gi'iwa artists really seem to know how to make basslines interesting and this one hums nicely, prominent but not overtaking the track allowing the acid lines here to show just how good they are. The more melodius Rabel Rabel actually uses video game samples which could have been disastrous but combined with the excellent synths and the amazing subtle but moving bassline he's managed to make a great track. Fun but not annoying after repeated listens. Sratim Metzuyarim has an other worldly melody that reminds me of Principles of Flight - Nighttime Lullabies in it's fairy tale feel & could easily have been on that album. This is a little squelchier than PoF though & this track twists & turns more in a shorter space of time but just as wacky throughout. I'm not sure what to make of Work In Space, it's bouncy & fun with synths right out of old computer games, it sounds. The melody seems oddly familiar but my main gripe in this is the bassline is not up to the usual standards. Very pedestrian bassline saved by the fact that it doesn't intrude too much on the track. Still I expect more now from basslines thanks to Gi'iwa. Hey Hop is a welcome return to well played basslines. The melody is played as a bassline giving it a lot of danceable energy. The sounds are experimental weirdness all the way through without any of it making sense but it all coming together in a way that really works for me. Ghat Whore is reaching the top of the energy stakes. It's got a high BPM of 150 along with synths & snare rolls to add to my brain shaking. This is one of those tracks that it seems impossible not to move to in some way. I'm sitting now, writing this but my heads going & I have a big smile on my face. The slight intrusion of some country melody is quirky & brief enough to be enjoyably funny. Weird twisted stuff which I love. Keeping up the energy Strangless is quite a random track with a lot of sounds going on. I'm not sure what to make of the leading melody at the start or the little melody at the breakdowns that continue sporadically through the next few minutes, but the acid like synths at the start are wonderful as are the squelchy sounds in the latter part. Not the best track on the album but pretty enjoyable anyway. Homegrown has another infectious bassline that makes me move involuntarily and is surrounded by crazy ass sounds. Definitely in the out there section of music. Crazy melody in the final run sounds pretty cool too. We are getting into my favourite section of the album with 2 Step Chase which has a lot of weird randomness at the start & a bassline that twists around noises from hyperspace but it's the acid melody here that just stabs at my brain with an ice pick. When it comes in for the second time it's lower & ends being played by the bass. Fantastic track. Fuck It carries on very well where 2 Step Chase left off. Squelchy noises sound like the dripping of hyperspace & the bassline is another bouncy one moving like a melody. The melodious sounds themselves become more prominent through the middle section & form slowly into another ice pick of a melody stabbing seratonin into my brain with each pass. A very funky track, perfect for dancing. The squelchy, spacey final run is my favourite part of this album We slow down a little with 24 Shots which isn't that great when compared to the rest of the album. Quite Electro & the bassline is pedestrian again which is a bit boring but like before it doesn't take over the track. There are a lot of sounds here & it's a bit too much in the old headphones & a bit ignorable on the stereo and overall a bit too electro. Sky Divers starts off slowed right down & you think it's going to be an ambient number to end with but the beat kicks in it's a crunchy one at that. More lethargic than anything else, it plods along in amiable fashion. The final part is magnificent though with everything coming together in a climactic yet reserved way. Ethereal female vocals twisted into some sort of underworld cry end the track in a dark but beautiful fashion. Bonus Track Hahaha, what the fuck is this? Psychedelic polka? Crazy funny & worthy of being a hidden track. Fits with Sattel Battel's style but divorced from the rest of the album. Hilariously bouncing with weird ass noises. As music goes this would be too weird to put on the album without it getting annoying but it's a fun little bonus. This is out there-off the wall-brains pulled out through the eyeballs sort of stuff. All in all this is one energetic, weird (in an interesting not annoying way) & it sounds really cool. Cover & track titles aside this is quality through & through. This is really shaping up to be one of my favourite albums of this year. Each track is pretty short, all being around 5 or 6 minutes each but as they flow into each other like a journey album it doesn't matter as the music progresses throughout the album. The music gets faster & stranger as we go along & when the pace drops at the end the weirdness just gets even more head schratchingly out there. Get this. The only problem I have with Gi'iwa is that they are making everything else sound worse. This is definitely a label to look out for in the future. I'll be supporting them if they keep this sort of quality up & now I need to buy their 2 compilations. The problem I have with the cover is that I've seen it many times before. Not this exact picture of course but many like it. It looks like a lot of hip hop covers from some years ago of albums I was less than impressed with so I get a bad feeling from it. Still, it's the music that counts & this music is gooooooooooooooooo'oood!!! The Sienis cover by the way is great
