drugs and music making
Otto Matta replied to drekmajster's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
That was really cool, PGD. Highly psychedelic, and definitely out there. I like the loose, abstract, almost improvised feel of it, but that it still seemed to have a fairly solid structure. -
Have a Nice Trip is actually a fun track. The combination of Israeli and Hungarian is interesting, maybe with a bit too much dependence on samples. You were high, though.

Mainly from the feeling it gives me, and I especially love being transported by music. If it's not taking me anywhere - if my feet are still firmly planted - then it's no good for me. Escapist music FTW. And if I can obsess about it for weeks, where it shapes and colors my existence, then it's a solid winner. Meanwhile I'll listen to it analytically, but that usually doesn't factor into liking it or not.

"Lost" is my track of the year so far. Totally cool. -

More precisely, and to the contrary, you're playing two different notes using the same sound or timbre. Similarly, a string chord on a synthesizer composed of three notes is still one sound/timbre, thus one layer. Not that that helps. -

I was just being stupid about Plastikman. I do find that music very boring - same with Penta, actually - but I was just trying to be funny. Regarding piano, if it's just one layer then much of this conversation goes to shit. If it's not one layer, then what about guitar? The only way I see that either could be more than one layer is by using Frippertronics or some similar live looping/layering machine. -

Hey, just curious, would people consider a solo piano piece one layer or more layers? Plastikman is boring! -

Making Electronic Music
Otto Matta replied to sammyhkhan's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
It certainly helps, in my opinion. "Know the rules so you know how to break them properly." Knowing too much can be a bad thing, too. I recommend finding a book on basic music theory, like a Music Theory for Dummies kind of thing, which should teach one about time signatures, key signatures and scales, chord structures, notes and rests, etc. It's really not that complicated, although it can definitely be made complicated. Learning some basic music theory, in my opinion, will be a lot easier than learning production, in my opinion, which will also be helpful if not necessary. Good luck! -

Ugh. Oopie was right. :drama: -
I thought about adding some strings, actually. Maybe I will now. Thanks. The guitar parts are all made with a VST called Revitar 2.0, which is pretty nice, but CPU-heavy.

Thanks for listening, everybody, and for the compliments. This is the last track of an EP called Les Introvertis Chroniques I'm going to attempt to release after fixing up the first five tracks (lots of work) and getting the whole thing mastered, hopefully in October sometime. Your support and encouragement have been very valuable to me, even though the music is not quite what this site is based around. Obviously we all have broad taste, for electronics or otherwise. I'm not going to try to make a living from music, or even necessarily try to perform or any of that stuff. I just like making it and being able to communicate via that particular language with others. In fact, when this little guy is on its way I want to get back to painting for a while. But my first and biggest love is music, so we'll see. I'd love it if I could combine the two, but knowing me, that's not possible. Can't be in two zones at once. If anyone has some good mastering advice, as in resources for people who do it well and open-mindedly, I'd love to hear them. PM is your friend. Thanks again. Per

That first sample is smokin'. As is #4, Nightmares Backstream. I'm hearing a lot of The 1st aesthetic on there, though, which is not altogether pleasant for me. That plastic aesthetic, if you know what I'm talking about. Not a big complaint.

Damn, I seem to keep forgetting Astral Projection on these lists, for some reason. Very important! Melody masters IMO. (A knack for counterpoint helps.)

One thing I've become sure of is that we often, maybe always, favor first experiences. When we have a powerful experience with something and pursue other things like it, the original tends to stay more powerful than its follow-ups. Like, say, your first roller-coaster ride. Or maybe your second. Every following attempt to relive the initial power of the first experience(s) just don't quite equate. Which means we're constantly in a losing battle to relive initial experiences with so many things. If we choose to chase after them, that is. Music is definitely like that. Drugs can also be like that. Girls, for sure. And then there are those rare times that you get to re-experience that initial thrill, and even rarer, surpass it. IFO was one of my very early psy experiences, and was extremely powerful to me, because it was also intended to be powerful. Ever since then I've been seeking that experience, and it has only occurred again in mini-versions a few times in 10 years. But because of its age and history in my mind, I don't think it can be topped. I can be a fool sometimes and think/hope that something is topping it, but that wears away. So it's highly subjective. Right place, right time. It doesn't mean that IFO is a particularly brilliant album, but the fact that so many people had a similar experience in the late 90s means that it contains a certain power that other albums didn't. I have similar landmarks from other genres and stages of my life that coat everything I listen to. -
Thanks, Billy!!! I'm really glad you like it! Yeah, I did record the storm. It's actually two different storms about two months apart from each other. The birds recording is also mine, from my window early one morning when they were just waking up and starting to make that beautiful racket.

Yeah, man, that's a glitch rhythm that starts to fade in at about :40. I fade it right before the beat. If you like that sound you should check out some stuff like Shuttle358! Especially the album called Frame. It's packed with that sort of thing. Anyway, I'm really glad you like the music.
