I think IM really hit their stride with Classical Mushroom and then quickly declined thereafter, probably because of popularity and ego. They certainly did not sound like those other artists you mentioned, Elysium, even if they may have been inspired by them. IM had their own voice, which is critical to good music (and successful music).

I never really became a big fan of IM, but I respect them for bringing a fresh, bold and very advanced technical sound to the scene back in the day. Nobody sounded like them, and that was their big asset.

Okay. My personal favorite Danes from the 90s came from the Hypnotic label. Colorbox, Bypass Unit and Psygone. Those fuckers tore some shit up. Koxbox was also great.

I actually find a good amount of truth (subjective ("truthfulness")) in exotic's post. This whole argument is subjective. For one, darkpsy is angstful, for sure. However, it's only the newest way that psy/goa music has been angstful all along. This music as a genre is for the most part very angry (in the broadest sense ("angst")) and reflects the inner torments of its creators. Otherwise, they'd be making more peaceful music that wasn't so fast and furious. The spiritual stuff involved (the samples and art, etc.) is only hinting at a mindset that the creators and listeners would rather have, except aggression, in this case, wins. I'm guilty too. I need the outlet. When this music doesn't suffice, I listen to something even harder. But yeah, I agree that darkpsy, even though I don't enjoy it, is certainly not random. Very creative stuff, to the point that I have a hard time fathoming the work involved to make it.

Lots of really good points. I'm not a darkpsy fan. The closest I get is maybe the SA thing and Dave's and Ka-Sol's stuff. I find darkpsy too complicated to get into a groove with it, basically, and it's certainly not very dance-friendly. But I disagree that it's trying too hard to be something it's not. It is what it is. However, I can relate to the sentiment. I always immediately disliked music that was trying too hard to decorate itself with a horror sound, because it always had the opposite effect on me. Horror cannot be portrayed with immediacy (silly samples and melodies, etc.). Which is why, although I love The Delta, I always disliked Thing (sorry, Ormion - something like Supercell has more subtlety and therefore more horror for me). Dave, it's just a respectful observation, but you seem conflicted. Your music has some of the phattest, most aggressive kickdrums I've experienced. Where did you get those from? I mean, I really like them, but if the origin of that sort of thing is X-Dream, then you have a dilemma. Take a track like Amor & Psyche. Lovely, by the way. And how about Completely Operational, a fantastic track, which is basically psy techno?

Psytrance for me has always been more or less fast, dark and aggressive, which is why I got into it. I don't think one can pinpoint an artist or album that started "dark psychedelic." It's part of an evolution that's based around a style of music that is inherently fast, dark, strong and psychedelic, written by skinny, geeky white[-ish] kids who feel the need to assert their inner muscularity through music. Works for me, as a skinny, white, geeky kid. That said, I agree that a straight line can be drawn to Parasense as a decisive mutation towards what we now know as "darkpsy." I think D-Dave has X-Dream issues. I know, should've been called "D-Dream."
