Yes, that album is highly recommended! (but came out in 2006, so did not qualify for the rules...) But I would definitely add that to your next purchase if you do not already have it!

I'm traveling at the moment, so can't properly browse through my cds... But off the top of my head, I would recommend Hedonix - Guerilla Ontology. Blends a lot of different styles into a unique sound, and each track has its own distinct feel. More hypnotic/progressive-ish at the beginning of the album and more uplifting/melodic near the end, but has a lot of interesting weird sounds throughout and some Goa influences... without being really progressive or Goa... Hard to describe and categorize, but I have listened to this album a lot. (Psyshop uploaded all the full tracks on Youtube, so you don't need to rely on shorter samples, and can really hear the tracks develop...)

(removed original comment, as no longer necessary...) Good review! I have been enjoying this one since I got it this week. Playing at an outdoor beach party tonight. Will definitely play some tracks from this!

Share you experiences with meeting psy/goa artists in real life
sidetrakkt replied to Ormion's topic in General Psytrance
I've been fortunate to have met and hosted several artists over the years, and almost all of my experiences have been positive. Really the only negative experiences I've had have been with local djs with big egos... but even this has been a pretty small number... (Seems like the artists who actually "deserve" to have big egos are some of the most humble and down to earth people, at least in my experience.) One of the most humble people I hosted was Simon Posford. He chilled at my place for a few days, was non-demanding and super fun to talk to and hang out with. He even went to a club the night before with me to help promote the event, and was casually walking around with a stack of flyers and talking to people. 99% of the people didn't know who he was and were having conversations about the event and how excited they were to see Hallucinogen, without ever realizing who they were talking to. Same thing happened at the event itself. He was just hanging out on or near the dancefloor the whole time, and there were a few times that people would ask me if I would introduce Hallucinogen to them when he got there, and I would just point to him and say that they had been hanging out with him for the past 20 minutes, and they would be so surprised. It was pretty funny... Another interesting story is about Mubali. I had been to around 6 events/festivals where he was playing, but for whatever reason I always missed his set. I got there late, was at another stage, had to leave early, etc. Plus he played so many times in the Pacific Northwest while I lived in Oregon, but it seemed like every time he played I was out of town or couldn't make the event for some reason. So even though he and I are both originally from the U.S., I finally saw him in India when we both played at this festival in Orissa. It was a pretty small but friendly festival, and we ended up hanging out a lot for three days. Really friendly guy and super nice. And then he was playing in Goa a couple months later when I was there, and I went to the party, but of course I had to leave around 6 a.m. to catch a flight and he hadn't played yet, so I missed his set again... But I'm happy to say that all of my "favorite artists" who I have met have turned out to be really nice people, as have most of the people involved, which is one of the reasons why I love this scene so much I guess. (Plus the music's not too bad either ) -
Yes, I played a Goa set this last Saturday (in China of all places - yes, there is actually a psytrance scene in Shenzhen. Mostly expats, but we are going strong, and converting some of the locals!) and I played "Azure Epos." Probably the track the crowd responded most to...

I tried to order the cd/t-shirt combo, but the 25% discount option never came up. Do I need to enter a code or how does that get applied? Also, does anyone know how the t-shirt sizes run? (for example, I know an XL in Asia is sometimes what we would call a Med. in U.S...) Thanks!

My favorite book of Alan Watts is simply called "The Book" (subtitle is "On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are"). I would recommend this if you were just to read one of his books, or as a starting point, as I think it captures the essence of his thinking pretty well. Highly recommended! -

Will this be released on cd? Also, please release the new Beat Bizarre album on cd! Thanks! -
Yeah, I love the Menis album! By the way, Semsis = Menis plus one of the guys from Cydonia...

He is still around... I saw him play in India about a year ago. But definitely not as active as he used to be... Maybe he will surprise us one of these days...

Goa Trance artists who do not take drugs.
sidetrakkt replied to ollylovesgoa's topic in General Psytrance
Heh. I've smoked with at least four of the artists (well, 3 and a half) mentioned on here... Not when they were making music in the studio, but at a party where they performed... I think much of this discussion of who does/doesn't is just speculation/wishful thinking -
The whole "Dragon Tales" album is a masterpiece! I would say essential to any collection, and my recommendation is to listen to it as a whole album. Just about everything they released on Blue Room. (in addition to Dragon Tales album, Stratosphere EP, Life Is... EP, and Too Pure EP) And I have to agree with the Koxbox remix of Juno Reactor's "Feel the Universe" And anything from Psychopod (before they changed their spelling) - Headlines EP (but really almost a whole album's worth of music) and the "Dreampod/Psychopod" single Anything Koxbox/Psychopod did between 1996 and 1998 is pure trippy psychedelia - I would say they were ahead of their time. So my recommendation is to get every one of these releases. Some of my favorite music! They had a lot of good stuff before and since, but that is my favorite period of theirs... Crunchy Moles (aka "A Major Problem in Australia") is also an essential track. It's from the album "The Great Unknown" which is also highly recommended. Their style changed after 2000. More full-on, less trippy. Not to say there's nothing good, but I wouldn't use this as a starting point to discover their music... Anything 1999 or earlier is some of the best psytrance out there!

No one - and I mean no one - does morning melodies like Jaia! "Mai Mai" is my favorite psytrance song, period, not just my favorite Jaia song. Brings tears to my eyes - so much emotion "Blue Energy" is probably my favorite trance album - for many years that would be the album I would listen to while driving home from a party. In terms of singles/compilation tracks (off the top of my head - I know I will forget a few of my favorites): "Brainstorm (live mix)" is amazing I don't think anyone has mentioned "Exosphere(Late Morning Mix)" - from the excellent "In My Brain" comp. He also did a remix a few years back, but the original (afaik the "morning mix" is the "original" released mix? is a nice uplifting morning track. "Le Chant Des Sirenes" is an amazing downtempo track "I would Like to Live" "Electricity" "Passengers" (with Silicon Sound) But really, you can't go wrong with Jaia He has a project Even 11, with Silicon Sound, and another downtempo project (but not very active) called Passengers, with Silicon Sound and Blue Planet Corp. He also makes house music as Kama (he is the Kama of Kama and MacGregor) but I'm not as familiar with that music - the track "Yellow" is nice - almost sounds like it could be a Jaia track...

Classic tracks that you think are nothing special
sidetrakkt replied to Manuser's topic in General Psytrance
Listen to this track loud on a good sound system outdoors (or better yet, from X-Dream playing live!) and you would probably change your mind... This is a track your whole body feels, not just your ears and brain... I love this track even for home listening, but it was truly multi-dimensional when I heard X-Dream play it at a festival! -

By the way, Rainbow Spirit = Boris Blenn, aka Electric Universe, Galaxy, and a number of other projects. But yes, he only released a couple tracks as Rainbow Spirit...

Lots of great Synchro stuff! My favorite album of his is Science Friction (his first, on TIP Records). He sort of combined psytrance with breaks and techno, so it was a different sound at the time, but very funky and bad-ass. But I really like all four of his albums. He did a track "Next Stop Oblivion" (originally released under his different project name Z to A, but remixed on his second album) that was a big hit. It's too bad he hasn't released anything for a long time...

Although Cydonia (as a group) sadly only had one album, In Fear of a Red Planet, which is one of my all-time favorites, they had many other singles. "Screaming Darkness" is an absolute classic, and they had many, many more. So many of these artists that have been mentioned have several albums and even more single releases. Do most of you even know the meaning of the term "one hit wonder?" It does not mean you only liked one track of theirs, it means that as an artist, they did not have many releases and only one track of theirs really ever became popular. As an artist, they never became successful, rather only one of their tracks is really known... If you can name several songs/albums of theirs, they are definitely not a "one-hit wonder"!!!! Before you reply to this topic, many of you should consult Discogs, and you may be pleasantly surprised!
