  1. People in the 70's said rock was dead because it didn't sound like Elvis or Buddy Holly. People in the 80's said rock was dead because it was flashy and full of hairspray and didn't have the emotion of 70's rock. People in the 90's said rock was dead because it was dumbed down and played by heroin addicts who ripped off 70's rock. People in the 00's said rock was dead because pop/R&B/hip hop was the new king. People today say rock is dead. Funny how it keeps sticking around.
  2. Too add, I'm inclined to say that psy reviews don't have the history of critical review other forms of entertainment have. Books, movies, and more mainstream music have all had an established history of paid reviewers for some time, and there's a certain critical eye expected from those people. Psy reviewers are pretty much fans taking the time to review an album, right? So they're already inclined to like it.
  3. It's a whole lot closer though. And I found a bunch of goa there which I've never found at the one in Seattle.
  4. To add to Rotwang's post: 1/38.9s = 25.7ms = 38.9Hz The accepted lowest frequency people can hear is 20 Hz, which has a period of 50ms, so if the time between drum hits corresponds to a frequency nearly twice that, you should be able to see why it sounds like a higher frequency. The closer you get the drum hits together, the more you approach audio frequencies. Here's another consideration: Take this normal kick drum sound: http://www.veracohr.com/audio/kick.wav This is what a single hit looks like. Notice how the peaks are much closer together at the beginning than they are at the end. This is because I programmed it to start at 233 Hz and end at 55 Hz. It should reach 55Hz in about 171ms (a little after the 0.15 mark). The whole sample is about 432ms long. Now look at the first half cycle (shaded part), it corresponds to a frequency of about 217 Hz. This is a little below the programmed beginning of 233 Hz because as soon as the sound starts, it's going down in pitch. Notice the time at the top that says what place in the sample we're at: As I said at the beginning, 1/38.9s = 25.7ms. Here's a picture that shows the 25.7ms point in my sample, and the half cycle that is shaded here corresponds to a frequency of about 100Hz: Disregarding for now the pulse->frequency nature of short delay times, you should be able to see that when you have kick drum hits that are only 25.7ms apart (and with my particular sample), even the audio itself never goes below 100Hz, which is almost twice the lowest frequency of the full kick drum sample. This can change depending on the amount of pitch change and time it takes to decay to the base frequency.
  5. I figured out the problem - I had my Flash player preferences set to "Block all sites from storing information on this computer". Once I changed that, the SC player works in all my browsers. Didn't work in any of them before (FF, Safari, Chrome).
  6. Here in Portland the used music stores are staying alive better than the new release stores. I usually go to the used store when I'm looking for rock/metal. We do have a store that sells vinyl for DJ's, used and new both, but they also sell and rent equipment to augment the music sales. That's where I got the goa vinyl I have.
  7. Well poop, why can't I use the Soundcloud tags?
  8. See, the URL in the Soundcloud tags that was http://soundcloud.com/veracohr/taste-of-life transforms into http://soundcloud.co...r/taste-of-life so it doesn't work. At least for me.
  9. I thought the Soundcloud tag wasn't working. Test:
  10. Wow, that's a cool one!
  11. There's always been inane crap that was popular, it's just that the music industry has evolved to focus on that instead of on good stuff.
  12. That could do it, but I think that plugin is intended for weirder things, like the example you posted where it not only has really fast hits but also pitch modulation. I didn't look at the Glitch page very long, but it sounds like it has a lot of capabilities beyond simple fast drum hits. The Kindzadza example you posted sounded to me like simple fast kick drum hits. When you have a monophonic drum synth or sampler, such that the note/sample is cut off as soon as the next one plays, really short kick drum sounds will sound higher pitched because typically start at a high frequency and decay exponentially to a low frequency. So if you're only playing the first part of the sound, you're only playing the high-pitched part.
  13. I was listening on high quality headphones. The bass tone is pretty clean, not many harmonics. I suggest something more sawtooth based (or whatever equivalent you do from your software), or dirty it up with a little distortion.
  14. Ha! I love the title! Did you make all the sounds with your software, including the snares? Or did you use some samples? I think the kick should be louder, and I might suggest the bass be a little more aggressive in tone. Otherwise, the psychedelic noises at the front of the mix could probably benefit from some effects, like chorusing, reverb, something like that.
  15. It's a 24-bit file, does your player have a problem with that? Maybe I'll replace it with a 16-bit version when I get home.
  16. Sounds like a single oscillator saw wave with a phaser. Maybe 2 oscillators. Back to the OP: http://www.veracohr....rs-Veracohr.wav I did this: - Matched the tempo - Filtered out low and high end from the audio so I could hear the lead better - Dialed up a simple single-oscillator PWM sound on the PEK - Located the root note and recorded/inserted notes, all at the root note, to match the pattern - Listened over and over, moving notes about to get the proper pitches - Adjusted the synth sound to match the best I could. I ended up with one PWM oscillator, a little noise and a little distortion

  18. Clearly not posting on Psynews enough!
  19. About to go to bed, but I stuffed myself with so much curry I'm not sure I can sleep. Went to some hot springs with friends today. Beautiful woods, hot water, awesome day!
