The first time you realized psytrance was the shit
Veracohr replied to Geostigma's topic in General Psytrance
I don't have any exciting story. I found psy through the internet, and came to like it gradually. I had downloaded "Mahadeva" from MP3.com years before I even knew goa was a distinct style. -

suggestions for plugins
Veracohr replied to Panoptes's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I haven't gone out of my way to try tons of different effects. I guess I go for the simple ones. -
I finished building my x0xb0x last night, and tonight I adjusted tested it out and adjusted the filter to my liking. Whoo hoo! Works wonderfully! Here's a sample. For shits and giggles, I used my Ibanez Tube King distortion pedal instead of a software distortion. It's better suited to guitar, but just for the sake of saying it was all analog with no software processing: http://www.veracohr.com/audio/x0xb0x.mp3

suggestions for plugins
Veracohr replied to Panoptes's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
As far as dynamics and EQ, most DAW's included plugins are probably fine, unless you're looking for something unusual. I use UAD compressors and sometimes EQ, most of my EQ use comes from the EQ's included with Digital Performer or Live. The reverb I use is also on the UAD. As far as other effects, there's some free ones I've found that I like: SupaPhaser: http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=1 TapeHead Medium (free AU-only version of Massey's TapeHead plugin): http://www.kvraudio.com/product/tapehead_medium_by_massey_plugins -

Try Artha. There's a free EP you can download: http://www.psynews.org/forums/index.php?/topic/58213-artha-fluori-dolby-ep It's more goa than what you mentioned, more fullon than Antares, Astral Projection, that kind of stuff.

Never heard that song before, but wow, it reminds me A LOT of Underworld. Probably you're talking about the various samples from movies, often sci-fi movies, as Penzoline mentioned. LOL. If there was ever a can of worms to be opened on this forum, you just did it! The general consensus on this forum is that early Infected Mushroom albums (The Gathering, Classical Mushroom) were more or less good and psychedelic, and they have gone steadily downhill and further from anything psychedelic since. Proceed to 5 pages of IM hate, people.

A friend of mine was into NRG for a while. Unfortunately I don't remember any names. Some of it was OK, some of it not. Maybe I can get him to come here and give some suggestions.

What music are you listening to right now?
Veracohr replied to Sputum Rotgut's topic in General Psytrance
Aes Dana - Lysistrata I don't know what it is about this song, but it's just fucking incredible to me! I recognize that in one aspect it's the kind of "goa at half speed" type of downtempo, which is often kind of a weak way of doing it. But this song is just awesome! Those gated vocal sounds that pan back and forth are so psychedelic! The bassline is simple, but simple in a good trancey way, and the other instruments over it combine to make a mysterious sort of vibe. I love this song! -
Yup. Some guy in Seattle I think.

Well you know what this means don't you? Time to get this shit going yourself! That's right! Start DJ'ing, meet some psy DJ's, meet some live psy artist, put on some parties, be the hype of NY!

Beginner Studio Setup?
Veracohr replied to CyclotronMajesty's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
It's not always self taught, there are formal trainings and step-by-step video tutorials on MIDI sequencing and sound synthesis and all of that. Sometimes I forget, but even I learned MIDI formally, whereas I learned synthesis on my own. I just think it's a good idea to jump into it, then ask specific questions in places like this when you need help. I also recommend user manuals. Some people prefer to fumble around a piece of software without referring to the manual. I don't get that. -
Did you ask Google? I typed in "New York psytrance" and came up with results.

I generally listen to music as albums instead of individual songs, and since I recently got some new CD's, my most played right now is probably: Porta Mento - The Portal Antares - Exodus- 21 replies

Beginner Studio Setup?
Veracohr replied to CyclotronMajesty's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I'd suggest getting a simple software synth and starting with preset sounds, then play with the controls to start learning. Over time as you get the hang of it you'll figure out how to make the sounds you want from scratch. MIDI sequencing records the note and control data you play. You can also usually enter data manually with a mouse. You can then move the data around, edit it in various ways to fit it to your beat and rhythm. -
Oh god, for a couple years my job was almost completely an exercise in Excel use. I still use it a lot. When the time comes that I move on from this job I'm going to never want to see another spreadsheet again.
