  1. Listening to the samples now. It's pretty good, although doesn't seem like anything special. Of course the microsecond Psyshop samples don't give much to go by.
  2. Criticizing is really only a useful start if people also change their personal attitudes and habits. I can complain til I'm blue in the face about megacorporations, but if I then go buy a Coke and watch a Disney movie have I done any good? There's no shortage of people to criticize and complain about anything. There's a serious shortage of people who truly care enough to change their lifestyle to not support what they don't think deserves support. At the end of the day most people will choose convenience. As the Dead Kennedys said: "Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death".
  3. Hey look, it's the 3 Portlanders all in one thread! And then that Belgian guy.
  4. I've had a philosophy cooking in the back of my mind for some years now. Maybe in a couple decades it will be my magnum opus and I'll write a book or something. It's the idea of conscious evolution. I see too many people around me living reactively. In big ways and small; on the scale of civilizations and the scale of self. One should be aware, conscious, of the things they do and the things that go on around them, and one should act with purpose. Think of how many people built their lives they way they did because "that's just what you do". Like there's a map of life laid out that you're supposed to follow. What might be different if more people took a moment to think "why do I think I need to do this?"

    hey all

Not exactly my cup of metal tea, but I feel compelled to point to you Wolves In The Throne Room. They don't have quite the symphonic/synth European metal sound your link does, but it reminds me a little. I call them "epic black metal". http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWgOLsNN8Yk I have their "Diadem of 12 Stars" album. Honestly the production is kind of crappy, they have a more sloppy sound not like the ultra-clean quality in most modern metal, but I still enjoy listening on occasion. I also kind of get a kick out of the fact that the album is an hour long and has only 4 tracks. The last one alone is 20 minutes. Gojira is about the only currently active metal band I really listen to. Well, I do listen to Metallica, Lamb of God, Slayer, Opeth, but not their current music. Oh, and welcome!

    Dead Space

Man it's positively hopping here since the re-introduction of the Off Topic page! Hell, you can click the "View New Content" link and see more than one page!
  7. Are any of these new songs? I know "Power of Trance" isn't.
  8. I hope it's OK to promote someone else's DJ mix. The Goa Constrictor, who posts very occasionally here, mostly about his internet radio show, recently did a 4.5 hour old school goa set. I know there's a lot of old school fans here, so perhaps some of you will enjoy it. It's pretty awesome. http://www.goaconstrictor.com/playlists Scroll down to "April 05th, 2011" for the link and song list.
  9. Damn, I always want to participate in these threads but I don't feel qualified because I don't follow all releases. I mean, I only bother to listen to a really really tiny percentage, mostly because when I don't have the money to buy anything, it just depresses me to listen to new music I can't buy. Plus my tastes are admittedly kind of narrow as far as psytrance, so that's another reason I don't feel qualified.
  10. They don't call it liquid bread for nuthin!
  11. John William Waterhouse: Alex Grey (of course): H.R. Giger:
  12. Salad with lime vinaigrette dressing. Never had lime vinaigrette before, but they didn't have my usual Balsamic vinaigrette. It's a little odd, but decent.
  13. Funny you say this (as a summary of the whole post). I tend to get really excited about things when I first get them, then over time they settle into some permanent place in my hierarchy of liking. This album is one I loved when I first got it, then started to find it less and less interesting. I still like it, but as you said it doesn't have a lot of depth, so over time it has dropped a few levels in my attention.
  14. Argh. So many comments here I want to respond to, but I'm going to keep it on topic. 5 and 6 both kind of fall under 1. All three are about money. Well maybe not necessarily 6. These three are also all kind of the same thing. Unless you're KISS or AC/DC playing the same stuff for more than 30 years, most musicians want to try different things. It's kind of a general trait of human beings, isn't it? Otherwise we'd all still be chasing herds of cattle around Africa. Or whatever.

    Toi Doi

Man, I really need to hear Technologic. I have Psyring Test and I like it, although not tons, but I remember seeing lots of comments that Technologic is so much better.
  16. I suppose it might be. Someone going for pure artistry doesn't have the factor of wide appeal to work into the song, but on the other hand there are some pretty simple, generic things that go into music that is widely popular: - A rhythm and/or beat that makes it danceable/pogoable/moshable (speaking across the music spectrum here) - A 'hook' that is easily remembered and recognized later around which the song is based. Think The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand", The Doors "Hello, I Love You", Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", even Astral Projection's "Mahadeva". - Simple and obvious. Once music gets too abstract or complicated, most listeners loses interest. If someone wanted to appeal to a wide audience, they could base their songs around these simple things, and use style just to fill in the blanks.
  17. Musicians have a double-edged sword when it comes to changes in their style. If they stay "true to their roots", they'll be criticized by people who think they should evolve. If they change, they'll be criticized by people who liked their original style better. Can't please everybody.
  18. This. Psytrance has pretty specific and narrow aspects that make it 'psy' as opposed to some other subgenre of trance or EDM. It would be boring to make the same stuff forever.
  19. Apologies for derailing the topic, but does anyone know anything about this Deezer site? I recently noticed them in my website statistics with a ton of hits (relatively, my site doesn't get many hits). I visited them and discovered that they acquired my whole album somehow and I'd never heard of them. At least they don't seem to be selling it. As far as the Liquid Flow album - good stuff!
  20. Hmm...well for me stuff like that certainly has interesting sounds and composition, but it's not the least bit "trancy".
  21. A friend who's into really brutal metal just mentioned Whitechapel to me the other day. I'll have to check them out.
