Ha! That's the most unlikely thing I've heard of in a while! gallowglass, I'm 3 hours south in Portland, OR. Actually I used to live in Seattle. I don't know about the Seattle area (I didn't really get into goa until after I left Seattle), but around here the few things I've seen have been pretty much darkpsy and fullon, so not that much to my liking.

Politics goes fits well with some types of music, but not all. Whatever IM is these days, I don't think it's one of those types.

Help! Please Criticize My Track!
Veracohr replied to Tetrasect's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
I concur. It's not really a style I like, but it sounds pretty good for what it is. I like melodies, so I say get some melody in there. -
I've really been getting into Gojira for the past year. They're my new favorite. One band that probably isn't very well known that I find interesting is Wolves in the Throne Room. I think of them as "epic black metal". It's probably not for every metal lover, but I like it. They don't have a bassist though, and I think it's to their detriment.

Help - I don't have none good pronunciation skillz
Veracohr replied to ariScotle's topic in General Psytrance
That's not sufficient for pronunciation. For those of us who don't know Finnish, the "o" can be pronounced "oh" or "ah", like "coat" or "cot". -
First electronic music I don't know for sure, but the earliest I remember liking was Moby, Chemical Brothers, Crystal Method, Prodigy. Around 1996-1997. I didn't really "get into it" even though I liked some of what I heard. I also don't remember the first trance I heard, but I do know who introduced me to trance. Possibly the first trance artist he introduced me to was my first trance favorite, Paul Van Dyk. This would have been probably 1997-1998. First goa/psy I think was when I came across Astral Projection's MP3.com site, and downloaded Mahadeva. I didn't get into goa for some years, or even really know the difference between goa and the trance I was listening to at the time. That must have been about 1999-2000.

The best trance ever was made before 2000...
Veracohr replied to Lemmiwinks's topic in General Psytrance
I think novelty in music tends to go in waves. Trance is not a very old genre comparatively. Look at the evolution of rock from the 50's to today: there were undoubtedly classics created in each of the eras and styles that rock has gone through, but that doesn't mean there weren't lulls when most of the output was rehashed and uninspired. It takes a special artist to really take a genre in a new direction, and when that happens that artist becomes the new classic. -
Have you ever collaborated with another artist?
Veracohr replied to Ormion's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
Yes I have. I started to reply to each point individually, but I ended up saying pretty much the same thing in each case: it depends on the individuals involved and your respective goals with the collaboration. It shouldn't be too hard; if you have difficulties agreeing on things, you might want to rethink the collaboration, otherwise I'd say just wing it. But I guess it also depends on how serious you are about the music you are creating together - my few collaborations were casual, so I didn't really care that the end product wasn't something I would care to make by myself. I think I only have one of my collaborations online right now. There's a song here called "Divine Believer" which was a remix of my song "Divine Conflicts" with vocals: http://veracohr.dmusic.com/music/ I have another song which is kind of Euro-trance I guess, and another one that is a dark, slow industrial sounding thing. -
Is it not feasible for you to listen on open speakers?
-
You need to tone it down. Listening on headphones is bad for your ears, to one degree or another depending on the type. And if you are listening loud enough to question whether it's too loud, it is too loud. Psy is not any better or worse than any other type of music as far as loudness is concerned.

Check out this drum synth plugin. It is totally awesome!

Pleiadians is absolutely the WRONG artist to use to introduce someone to goa. They are way too chaotic. It would be better to use something like Astral Projection or Chi-A.D. Also, I might agree that Maia is not particularly melodic. Lots of notes do not equal melody.

I think healium was using "4x4" to refer to the four-on-the-floor beat structure, not the time signature.
-
Hasn't all trance been (generally) in the 135-145 range since its birth? As far as the 4x4 structure, well that's just a trance staple. Change the beat and it's no longer trance, it's something else.

That's one of the good ones. Listen to Digitally Imported's Goa-Psy channel for a little while, you'll hear plenty of crap.

Kai-Q: "High-Q" refers to the Q of a filter, commonly referred to on synthesizer filters as "resonance". A higher Q has a more exaggerated sound at the cutoff frequency. But actually, the example you posted doesn't sound like it has a particularly high Q, it's mostly just an envelope-controlled pitch bend with a fast decay. Probably some filter modulation as well, but not really with a very high Q.

What's funny is that I have a tendency to put too many changes in my music, so I made an effort on this song to not do that. I guess I swung too far to the other side. And as far as the percussion, that's nothing new. I never write good percussion lines.
-
Well you have to keep listening to it in order to write it!

Pardon the rough mix: http://www.veracohr.com/audio/0311.mp3 I actually keep going back and forth on it. Sometimes it seems fine, sometimes it seems too repetitive. And it cuts off abruptly at the end because I hadn't decided how to end it yet. The repetitiveness is the problem I have with it.

I want to go to a Jewish wedding now. I've never been to a wedding that was that much fun!

I've been working on this song for a while and was pretty close to being finished, then I stepped back and realized it's not as good as I thought it was. I've now been trying to figure out how to alter it to make it better, and I can't get a damned thing done. Everything I try sucks! I've got two other songs in the same state. I'm getting very angry about this! Just venting... :drama:

need to get an amp to match speakers?
Veracohr replied to technosomy's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
Crown is good. I don't know much about Quest. -
I don't like most rap either, but it is electronic music.

If you wanted to get picky about it, you could say that Breaks and Trance are two different genres. More different than Psychill and Trance are.
