New ambient/down-tempo album: Time/Illusion
Veracohr replied to Veracohr's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
Okay, no replies, but just for the hell of it I'll say that the album is now available at CDBaby.com: http://cdbaby.com/cd/veracohr -
Not entirely. New analog manufacturers pop up from time to time. http://www.davesmithinstruments.com http://www.future-retro.com/ http://www.doepfer.de/ http://www.vermona.com/index.php?en_news http://www.synthtech.com/ http://www.synthesizers.com/index.html http://www.blacet.com/ http://www.modcan.com/ http://www.paia.com/ http://www.analoguesystems.co.uk/index2.htm http://www.moogmusic.com/ http://www.jomox.com And more...

I generally refrain from blatant self promotion in forums that aren't intended for it, but I'd like to invite you to listen to my track Panta Rhei. It's not psy, nor is it a masterpiece by any means, but IS 120bpm, and I think it's quite danceable and enjoyable at 120bpm.

I gotta say, I first heard of them when they had that one or two songs that were really popular (in the US) in the 90's. I didn't think much of those two songs, but when I heard some other music of theirs a few years later I thought "wow, this is pretty good". However, I never did look into their whole catalog as I meant to. I guess I should.

Im Back ! .....(who cares)

Good stuff! -
My new album is out now, titled Time/Illusion. It is a laid-back, ambient/down-tempo album that has been nearly 4 years in the making. 1. Time of Illusion 2. Patterns in Chaos 3. Tishallulé 4. Time of Genesis 5. Time of Dreams/Illusion of Form 6. Illusion of Truth 7. Illusion of Structure 8. Illusion of Time Three tracks, "Time of Illusion", "Time of Dreams/Illusion of Form" and "Illusion of Truth" are available on my website: Veracohr.com in 128kbps MP3 and Quality 5 Ogg, as well as on my Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/veracohr. The album will be available for sale in a few days from CDBaby.com, and eventually at iTunes, Napster and a variety of other download sites that CDBaby submits releases to. This apparently can take up to a few months before releases are available on those sites. This album has been an interesting journey for me. I started out with a fairly clear concept after a certain discussion with a friend over drinks. Over time, the project has changed, both because of the time period involved (and my ability to keep my train of thought), and because my own tastes in music changed a little during the course of making this album. I started to become much more heavily into goa and psytrance shortly after beginning work on Time/Illusion, and I think as a result, the latter part of the album is a bit more "psy-chill" or "psybient" than the beginning. However, I wouldn't go as far as to call it "psybient"; it's somewhat less overtly psychedelic and a bit more mellow. Trance has been my passion since I became interested in electronic music, and I still make trance, but this was a special project that I found challenging and fun. And I have already started to have preliminary thoughts about another release in the ambient arena. --Veracohr

Can you post a sample? Here's an VST - AU wrapper: http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=5 And oh yeah: I highly doubt the volume change has anything to do with using Logic over any other DAW. It's a matter of arrangement, dynamics and frequency content.

A resonant snare. Probably acoustic, but if there's a good synthesized one I could use that too.

Did anyone actually do that on vinyl? I think the whole hidden track thing on CDs was just someone's clever idea, but clever ideas cease to be clever after a few times.

Anyone have any good resonant snare samples you care to share?

I use Audio Units drivers. I don't pay much attention to that side of things; I just get things working and go from there. As far as sample rate, there's no need. If it's going to end up on a CD, there's no point in recording at a higher rate. Especially with synthesizer sounds, which don't typically extend as high as acoustic sounds. And yes, Native Instruments makes good synths. Too bad Massive crashes my computer so I can't use it. Absynth and FM8 put a strain on it, but at least I can use them. I have an elderly computer, and can't afford a new one (since I use Mac). If I really wanted, I could use my much newer laptop (Macbook Pro 2.2GHz), but I think that would annoy the hell out of me, plus that would mean I can't use my UAD plugins (without spending money on the UAD Xpander).

I'd just like to say that I'm happy Psynews is back online. This forum is mostly responsible for me getting into goa. A few years ago, I had a very limited range of experience with goa and psytrance, and I found Psynews while searching for info on some artist names someone had given me for goa. Every once in a while I get in a mood of discovery, and it's great because I can just pop into one of those "What is your favorite..." threads in General, and find dozens of names that I can then go look up. Since I haven't been into psytrance that long, there's still tons of names a lot of you are familiar with that I have yet to discover. This has been a heartwarming tale of music discovery brought to you by your friendly neighborhood Veracohr. :drama:

My DAW doesn't give times, just the buffer choice. I use 128 samples when I'm writing/playing. So, assuming there's no hidden latency that I'm missing, (1/44100)*128 = 2.9ms. I can use 64 samples to a point, but only if I've only got one or two processor-light instruments going in Reason, or a hardware one. Not a chance if I'm using a Native Instruments softsynth. When I mix, I jack the buffer up to 1024.

I just got ADAM A7s a short while ago, and I love them. I have not heard the other two, but from what I have heard by people more knowledgeable and experienced than me, they should kill the other two. Thing about the ADAM's is that they are quality studio monitors, which means they are meant to be accurate, not necessarily good-sounding, so some people may not like them because they don't have a response. I upgraded from Alesis Monitor One MkII. The ADAM's have better high end, better stereo field, smoother low end but I feel they don't go as low as I'd like. The woofer is a different material than most monitors, which was described to me (by an ADAM rep on another forum), as producing less low end distortion than paper woofers. Can you really get a pair of A7's for 350 euros? I can see how they might be less expensive in Europe than in the US (less distance to travel), but still the lowest price here is more than twice that ($1000 US). Get the ADAM's. No discussion needed. And next, upgrade your converter (I also need to do this, as I also have an M-Audio interface).

For some reason, I couldn't play the OGG files. I don't know why, I used to be able to, but now I can't. I even made sure I had the updated OGG components, and I still can't play OGG files. I'm pissed. Anyway, I was able to listen to the classical music in the WAV file. My opinion is that if it sounds more "full", that's because it's tuned lower. "Full" usually means more low frequencies. Also, in the classical music WAV file, the lower-tuned one sounded at least a step lower. A step below A4 (440Hz) is G4 (392Hz). 392/440 = 0.89. Even half a step down is 415.3Hz, and 415.3/440 = .94. However, 432/440 = .9818. So with the classical music example, the lower-pitched one is not just tuned to a slightly lower reference, it's in a lower key altogether. Another thing is that dynamics has nothing to do with frequency. It is all to do with level. Talk about propaganda. I don't know if a "Nazi propaganda minister" was the one to propose 440Hz (everything I found just said "an international conference"), but if there's one good way to make people recoil from something, it's to invoke the Nazis. Besides, 440Hz wasn't adopted as "official" until 1955. And besides which, not everything uses 440Hz. And this also ignores the system of tuning. Sure, you can tune A4 to 440 or 432Hz, but what if you're using just intonation? Go a few steps down, and you're at a different frequency. And what if you're not using a twelve-tone system at all? Would tuning the reference pitch 8Hz down still make another scale "more full and dynamic"? I call bullshit. If you like music better tuned to 432Hz, that's cool, but why denigrate music that is not?

Most Recent track- help with EQ and filters?

I don't know that you need to touch any filters, just the volume. And by all means make it easy on yourself by using automation, that's why it was invented! -
Most Recent track- help with EQ and filters?
Veracohr replied to dsobolik's topic in Music Making and Production/Industry
On the first one: I'd say you're good EQ-wise. I think the white noise is a little too high, but I also think it's used too much/too often. You could either: 1) lower the level; or 2) keep the level the same but reduce the amount that sound is used. I might also suggest putting a bandpass filter on the white noise and modulating that. Otherwise, it's a good song. I do, however, think that the first few minutes could REALLY use an awesome lead melody. On the second one, I think most or all of the leads are a bit too high. It's kind of difficult to explain without a time counter to describe when the sounds come in. But I'll leave it at saying that most of the leads are too high (but not WAY too high, just a little too high). Especially when they have longer notes. Bring the level down when the notes are longer, bring it back up a bit when the notes are shorter. -
Thank you. I had a crappy day, and that made it all better. You're my favorite person for the day for posting that! :clapping:
