Difficult? I doubt it. Sounds like easily-programmed sequencer patterns to me. At 1990, we're talking hadware sequencers most likely, but still, not difficult. Probably annoying and not nearly so cool. More capability often leads to more crap than music that has to be made as good as possible within certain limitations.

I'm not a connoisseur of darkpsy by any means, since I don't like most of it, but even the first CD of the X-Dream Best Of compilation (ie. 1996 and earlier) seems to have elements of darkpsy, so perhaps there's some precursor there.

I've gotten a little bit of a start on mine. One hard part is that I haven't been able to use some LFOs when I want, if the LFO doesn't provide a sine wave. Maybe that wouldn't matter, since it's not an audio source, but I figured I'd try to be a purist about it. But this did give me a chance to delve more into the ring modulation and feedback on the PEK.

Is there some specific line you're looking for? Otherwise, movies, lectures, whatever. Find something that fits your intention for the song.

The majority of it seems kind of aimless, more like it's a showcase for cool sounds that don't have much of a musical theme behind them. There's some cool parts, but no musical cohesion. It gets pretty cool about 4:00.

I chose Both, not because I like both equally, but because my favorite ones are trippy ones that make me bop my head. Not exactly "dancefloor killers", just songs that have a groove and make me bop my head, yet are still very psychedelic.

Well yeah, but the idea is to put constraints on yourself, and see what you can come up with. Otherwise, we're just making normal music, not 'themed' music.

No, chords are not additive synthesis. Additive synthesis builds other waveforms by adding sine waves in Fourier series, which are all harmonically related at certain amplitude ratios. Big chords are a go.

If you want to go for the sine thing, how about this: No FM or additive synthesis (since you can make any waveform from sine waves using these types of synthesis). Distortion okay. I say we come to an agreement by the first of May, and have until the end of May to make the music. Any other rules/restrictions?

Any ideas for a theme?

I'm going to shamelessly rip off an idea I saw today. At some point on this other forum, people started a "monthly mission" music project, where every participant would make a piece of music based on some theme. They made a website for it, and some of the past 'missions', are: James Brown tribute, "Winter for fish" (Not only are you a fish, but it is also winter so the lake is frozen over), "All Hallows Eve 2006" "The Machine Singing" (pieces using only 5 audio samples and nothing more), "Monster Mission!" (monster movies). A new one someone suggested on the forum was "make a song using only sine waves" (doing anything you can and want to them, but sine waves as the only audio sources). Get the idea? Anyone interested? We could do something like: everyone interested provide one short piece of audio, and all submissions must use only these pieces of audio (like above, edited and mangled in any way you possibly can). Or we could follow the model the Monthly Mission website did, which is everyone who wants to suggest a theme, do so, and then we vote on the theme to use. Then we could put a time limit of, say, a month to produce a piece. It would be fun! :posford:

"Everyone" does not know this, because they don't suck. They're not top of the line, but they don't suck. And (above firmware issue aside), MOTU makes quality hardware. They are a "bang for the buck" manufacturer, and they deliver in that regard.

Ah, well, good thing mine came with 1.1.5. I haven't used it for any playback yet, just some location recording with the laptop, and as an extra MIDI port with my desktop.

What's the problem with the firmware updates? I have one, but I don't want to update the firmware if it's going to fuck things up.
