Lol whoops exactly! yes youre right a set budget would be better, i mean theres no way in hell i would actually pay 50k for a tube compressor. and just imagine something breaks, thats just one big bummer then. and with all those components, its likely to have to be serviced from time to time. adding much more cost; for something that in the very end - is only slightly better than software. well okay in this case its a bit more than slightly. -
Okay cool, that makes me like these tracks even more now

Room treatment and acoustics is definitely on my list too, that can never be perfect enough. The UAD package would be dream.. But it's a freaking cash grab.. If you buy the cheapest, that's still very expensive you can run like 2-3 plugins at most. Then the dsp is exhausted. So you really gotta spend like, alot, to make it worth while. And then, would it really be worth it? Would it really sound that much better than stock/fabfilter/brainworx stuff? Maybe. Probably. -
What do you miss in music/goa/psy-trance?
astralprojection replied to Mentaloscope's topic in General Psytrance
Is that the same mikro makro as on here? Sounds nice! -
Yes that's the sound. Three really great tracks. I got stuck on vibraspheres catalog though, and unfortunately missed out on alot of other really great prog. So I can't really bring much to the topic that's outside that catalog. But the genre is wonderful, it's always a happy feeling to it. Even darker prog has a positive outlook. You, who have a finger on the pulse of current modern psy, is this genre still prevalent? What years are the tracks you posted from? I like all three alot. But if like to contribute with one of the older vibra tracks and one of the "newer". But it's funny you said everyone knows about vibra and atmos and here I go posting vibra and atmos

@Trolsk not negative, more like cautious. but you and padi opened my eyes a bit. and i now think maybe it could work (and the studies prove that it does, i suppose).

If you have pure mdma, the comedown is not nearly as bad as if you take a pill with lots of shit in it, that's for sure. So I guess it could be a very truthful experience. I'm not just sure it will last. Even if you have the best experience in the world it is highly likely you would just consider it as a manufactured high, few days later. Whereas on mushrooms there's no such feeling, and the effects could be felt years and years later, simply cause of the mechanism. I still remember my mushroom trips but the mdma I'd more than be happy to forget, given the option to do that... They just blend together as a bad chemical romance.
-
Sure. I can definitely see the effect of mdma being very positive and helpful, in the moment, but I worry when the comedown comes, which it always does, that they will only feel like they were fooled by a chemical, and it wasn't real. The risk of feeling worse than when you started feels very imminent.
-
couldnt agree more.

i wouldnt want mdma to be a medicine; i think it doesnt have any use. the effect feels very "chemical" and "fake" and the comedown would probably spiral these people down even further. edit: i think psilocybin would be a better bet for a true medicine. it doesnt feel fake at all, has a very natural "mother earth" type of feel to it - where you can really find progress. and no comedowns. no obvious alterations to normal brain function (neurotransmitters) ofc i wouldnt want it to be freely avaliable, it can do damage on its own in terms of panic/anxiety (which id still say is rare) - but i think this could be researched further and if done in a very controlled setting could have much more use for these PTSD patients, then say MDMA that has a very distinct feel and its pretty much completely useless. you just feel like shit afterwards and you didnt learn anything.

apparently thats exactly what they did with their new h3000 plugin https://www.eventideaudio.com/products/effects/pitch-delay-modulation-filtering/h3000-factory but it lacks everything (imho) that made the original so good. now it sounds just like any stock plugin id say. no character, sound profile, or anything like that. it has no "mojo". in my opinion at least=)

What music are you listening to right now?
astralprojection replied to Sputum Rotgut's topic in General Psytrance
i cant believe how good it sounds EVEN through the camera/phone microphone. Thats the Lunar Civilization sound right there..or maybe not, its a great sound nonetheless -
What would you buy, and why? (This seems like a natural topic progression from that other topic regarding old tools and the quality they still impart) Id buy alot of stuff thats for sure.. First and foremost Id get the JD-800. Or maybe the 990 cause its cheaper, and then get a controller for it. It sounds very particular and the main lead from Spiritual Healing was done in that thing, and thats probably the best lead sound ive ever heard. And theres just no way of getting the same Tonal qualites in any other synth; at least not currently avaliable. The Roland D-50 would probably come closest to the same tone; as the JD-800 had waveforms based off of the D-50. Id also wanna get the JP8000 cause it sounds so fresh and clean, very digital but very nice. And it has a wonderful arpeggiator/sequencer. Id say its either Virus, JP8000 or Nord lead, and Id pick the JP. Then Ill get the Fairchild 670 compressor from the 50s. That thing sounds so freaking good, its a tube compressor thats built like a tank (and looks like a tank, aswell). You just cant miss with that thing. Its even got M/S compression; something that staggers me they did all the way back then. And finally Id buy the API 2500 compressor. Also a beast. Its a VCA similar to the SSL bus compressor; but it has much more control AND a sidechain HPF. So for that extra sub-punchiness. Then Id probably be set, the rest Ill make do with software =) Total cost; roughly: €56.800 Fairchild 670: €45.000 API 2500: €3000 JP-8000: €7500 JD-800: €1300

Do you do drugs while listening to psytrance?
astralprojection replied to FatKidWitAJetPak's topic in General Psytrance
Alcohol is a bitch to kick, but no drugs now for almost 2 years. I dont count cannabis into that category though Psytrance still is great both with and without the enhanced mindstate. Which in the long run is not enhanced at all anymore -
Yes, software has gotten exponentially better over the past decade or so. I wish they wouldnt make software synths so "clean" though; they should also emulate a converter and an output stage, inside the plugin.* Some synths sound bigger and bolder, than others - but just using those clean synths, with surgical linear phase eqs, working at the highest resolution possible - usually leaves the music sounding either soulless - or has that software "plastic" quality to it. Even in 2020. Ofc that can be remedied as discussed in that other HW vs SW thread. There are certainly ways of emulating pretty much ANY signal path you should desire; albeit pretty difficult sometimes. I think of those old hardware units as cheat-codes; kinda. In that it may be an EQ, but it also has passive compression, distortion, filtering, noise- "mojo". And presumably it is also why they cost a small fortune to own one. Anyway, I hope I got my point across and my apologies for sounding negative, @RTPbut this is serious stuff for me ^^ *then again there are many digital synths that doesnt use a converter or output stage, like a Virus; that still sounds beefier than any SW synth I can think of. So there is likely still even more to it than just the signal path. Still some ways to go, for software synths to beat one of those, I think. in what way would you say they have evolved? I think they probably have too - in that they can both be very accurate while also pleasant at the same time - something I suppose was much rarer back in the days.

Hmm.. The "sound enhancing techniques" (im guessing you mean the various tools that were avaliable then vs what is avaliable now) used in the 90's was stuff like the eventide and TC electronic signal processors, that still to this day cannot be matched. The h3000 for example, that still goes for about 2500 euro, used. The newer h9000 version costs about 7000 euro. And in the pop-world (which is the epitomy of modern music) engineers still use hardware from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. Sound cards have absolutely nothing to do with the progress of making music in software. You could technically make music with your eyes alone, without a sound card even plugged in. Sure, a better soundcard may mean you get to hear more details - thus making better decisions - but listening to some old hallucinogen stuff for example - that argument goes out the window. Even captain hook which is ultra modern (and considered fairly popular) sounds plastic fantastic. 192khz/24bit doesnt make it sound better. People certainly don't use "the same presets and filters" whatever that even means. . All the "sound tricks" (?) that's avaliable now, were avaliable then, and sounded better then. They had ad/da converters, transformers etc, to add to the sound signature. Something software users have to add to the signal path now, using creativity. So still playing catchup. The one thing you're right about is that music is louder now. And sterally clean. So in short, there has only been negative progress generally speaking, except for loudness and the sterile modern sound of ultra cleanliness. Which certainly only makes the music lose soul and doesnt make it better. Does a surgically clean mix with a loudness of -6 lufs sound better than an organic mix with -10 lufs ? That is ofc subjective. My whole point is that music production / music engineering has not become better in 30 years.

modding fallout 4 was a pain in the ass too. btw i noticed fa4 got alot of hate, but i thought that one was even better than new vegas. never understood why people thought that was so much better, was it the story? couldnt have been the gameplay. fo4 was incredible! i mean it had issues but beside that. nv had tons of issues too. but fo4 was truly spectacular and i cannot understand the hate on that one from FO fans.
