Yeah, I like the idea for the track - cold, harsh sounds depicting the winter; even the clipping fits as a metaphor for frosting - but indeed it peaks around 1:30 and nothing new is happening after that. Add more layers, maybe some slow sweeping bass-line, some FX (like winter blows, etc.), your main sequence would also use some variation: try to maybe gate it, play with additional reverb / delay for it, filter it. This alone would make it more interesting. To top it off I'd add some key changes (when you have added the bass) and maybe some 2nd/3rd notes to the main sequence to create chords. Also the drums could use some flangers or glitch effects, if you're after the Aphex Twin / Squarepusher style. Lastly, what Djuna said - it seems there's compressor added on main channel, which results in your strings being very loud at the beginning and getting much more quiet once drums come in. Try to ensure various channels to have equal loudness throughout the track, by adjusting them on individual level (or in homogeneous groups, e.g. drums + bass, strings + effects, etc.).

Give the man a break - USA has gained lots of traction, even if it turned precisely in the opposite direction he'd imagined...

Commercialization of psytrance - where do you draw the line?
antic604 replied to recursion loop's topic in General Psytrance
Yes, that's why I said "disregard visuals & lyrics". It helped me that I wasn't aware it's Zayn Malik from One Direction when I 1st heard in on a radio while driving to work That song has so many awesome key changes, especially the one leading to chorus at 0:45-0:55 or the bridge at 2:30-2:50. And it further sort of confirms my point - that with big "pop" music there's always the surface layer for the masses and some depth for those looking for it - that someone thought that repeating first 10s of the song is equal to instrumental version -

Need to update my review to 5/5. The only thing that still "bothers" me is the gated singing in 1st half of "Dream Telepathy". Otherwise it's just perfect and a serious contended for top spot of 2016 releases.

Imba - First Encounter [Suntrip Rec.]
antic604 replied to antic604's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
CD sales - probably not. Overall sales - I'd imagine they do. Or maybe I'm just old & grumpy and the artists / labels are happy enough from the advert money over at Youtube and royalties from Apple/Google/Spotify, etc.? Or they're just happy to have their music out in the public, regardless whether they get paid or not - I know I would, but I got other means to support my family. If so, props to them & disregard my comments -
Well isn't it ironic, don't you think? I'm probably on your "list", so whatever edit: BTW, you should add a poll to let everyone hate ...err, sorry... vote!

Commercialization of psytrance - where do you draw the line?
antic604 replied to recursion loop's topic in General Psytrance
Personally I don't mind commercial stuff, I just approach it with the same criticism as everything else - if it's good, it's good. It just requires a little effort to dig through the s**t. There was a time in my life when I wouldn't really listen to the music that's on the radio / TV, but nowadays I'm just selective, because some of it is really good, with unusual ideas, techniques, vibe or atmosphere, musical arrangements. As I pointed out several times I appreciate details in music - either technical or artistic -, therefore big budgets afforded in pop-music sometimes really pay off and result in some stunning creations. I even sometimes feel as if the pop producers are trying to one-up one another and come up with strange or unusually sounding music. Just listen to this - as a music, disregard the visuals and the lyrics. Musically and technically it's stunning - like a mix of Aphex Twin, Squarepusher and some ambient IDM. It delivers both on the superficial (pretty faces in video, sexual lyrics) and musical / technical... With psytrance however, being "commercial" more often than not just means catering to the lowest expectations, with simple music stripped out of any nuance and depth that's necessary for something to be considered "psychedelic" - it needs to be direct, flashy and easily digested but after 2-3 listens you know everything there is to know about the tune, there's no mystery, no hidden meanings and no 2nd (3rd and 4th) layers of detail... But, I don't mind this to exist at all - I just avoid it. Maybe some people will find "better" music because of it, even if just by googling for "psytrance" and finding some real stuff (provided they won't click the beatport pages, WTF?!?!). I also try not to be prejudiced and sample most of new music, just because there are gems hidden in the swamp And BTW, as others have said already - psychedelic trance, the "proper" one (Hallucinogen, Doof, Cosmosis, TIP, Koxbox, GNoTR, etc.) was really commercial in late 90's. Like everything in life, it seems to go in circles - there are recurring trends for everything: music, clothing, hair styles, beards, even foods... -

Strange, because Arabesque who's distributing the CDs says 16th Dec and I'm pretty sure it was already that 2-3 weeks ago when I pre-ordered it. -

So now Armin van Buuren is producing "psytrance"
antic604 replied to Meltwater's topic in General Psytrance
Gresham's law. Vini Vici's track is the same length, uses the same notes and same frequency ranges that say Son Kite, Jaja, or (why not) Ticon and serves exavtly the same purpose; but it's of much lesser quality. Hence, it's more of it in circulation- 64 replies

DNA - Virtual Jungle Remake (Zion604)
antic604 replied to Penzoline's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
You know why this album is so short? Because - normally - you build up the tension in every single track. Here, the tension is built throughout the album - early tracks sound pretty 'empty' as if some channels with melodies, bigger acid lines, etc. were muted (e.g. where's the oriental melody from Phreaky's "The Second Moon"?!) and they only appear in latest tracks, culminating in "Nuclear Fissionchips" and "Tango Electro" I still like it, though- 9 replies

V/A - Sonic Sound System Vol. 4 [Nano Rec.]
antic604 replied to antic604's topic in Artist News and Labels announcements
Yeah, had a brief listen of it over at Bandcamp and decided not to buy it. Sure, some of that sounds interesting (e.g. Tongue & Groove, Pogo, Zephirus Kane) and I'll consider their albums if they ever come out, but it's forgettable for the most part... Bought Hardfloor's "The Art of Acid" instead -
Next week Nano Rec. is releasing a 2xCD compilation - a 4th instalment in the Sonic Sound System series. The compilation provides a wide range of artists all sounding similarly, but if you like Nano sound you'll love it As usual with Nano, full thing is available to stream / listen: and you can buy the CD in usual places: https://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/nar/nar2cd047.html

Well, it depends how you perceive laziness - for example in my work I always got top performance scores, good salary + bonuses, am regarded as a highly qualified expert and were quickly promoted to top management positions. But, I KNOW I could do even more. Is that laziness, or just optimisation of effort vs. what I expect from life? I could sacrifice my personal time - lots of which is allocated to family of course - and likely get even higher with more money, etc. but I already feel comfortable: my family has all we need materially and the free time that's left is spent together. Obviously - like with work - I feel I could be an even better father or husband, but I also need to carve out some time to listen to music, enjoy some hobbies or ...write posts like this. I'd probably lost my sanity if all I did was work, spend time with wife & play with kids. I need to have some time for me. In the end it's good to feel lazy, if others don't actually think of you as being lazy

So, you lied on a job interview? That was the reason for your thread about lies earlier? On topic - sorry, can't really help there. I'm pretty fluent in SQL, VBA and ...8-bit Atari assembly, but never needed to learn C. I think if you have experience with any other high-level language you should be able to get the synthax quickly, but then spend some time on the intricacies of specific implementation. What will you be using it for?

Congrats!!! Sorry I didn't contributed, but somehow this music doesn't appeal to me - which is strange, as I love Shpongle, Ott, Globular, etc. - and I wasn't keen on spending GBP40+ for a release I'll not listen to... Hopefully next time, though
