01. Untilted 02. Orthocone 03. Indelible 04. Uncoiled 05. Architeuthis 06. Prehensile 07. Decapod 08. The Worm (Part II) 09. Entrapment of John Dory (Squid Inc rmx) Squid Inc. is a collaboration project of two very prominent artists of early 2000’s: Ady Conor and Santos de Castro. Their music was never ‘goa’ and gravitated strongly towards more ‘psychedelic’ venues, with Ady’s Scorb project prefering more varied, experimental and - slightly - brighter sound, while Santos’ Deviant Species focused on darker, cinematic, entrancing experiences. “Indelible” is a music for a dark sci-fi horror movie, with lots of cybernetic sounds and vast atmospheres, punctuated by a minimalistic, relentless beats. Their label - Trick Music - refers to it as “psychedelic techno” and it’s a fitting description: a lot of care is placed to the sounds and textures, that are given plenty of room to breathe: develop, morph, change over time ...and repeat. Stylistically it’s somewhere in between forest darkpsy and full-on: it has that nightmarish, menacing vibe, density to the sound and attitude of the former, but with a hard hitting stabs and mild “melodic” hooks of the latter (think Nano Rec. style). It’s definitely much more dancefloor friendly, without being cheesy or overly simplistic. The arrangements are usually pretty straightforward: 1st half introduces various “melodic” and “sonic” ideas and sequences, while the 2nd mixes it all together in a jazzy manner, i.e. the sounds and sequences complement or are talking to each other, creating more intricate patterns. Having said that, more often than not it does sound pretty “boxy” and “sequenced”, meaning that most of the phrases start and are repeated in equal, perfectly timed measures of 4, 8 or 16 beats. Also, while the tracks are definitely not static, they - and the album as a whole, as well - don’t really progress in a flowing, gradual and incremental manner like Deviant Species’ “In The Hands of the Randomiser” did. There’s no story here, I think. It doesn’t help, that - sonically - most tracks sound similarly and thus lack identity or uniqueness: the drums, bass and effects are very much alike, if not copied outright. Further still, a lot of those sounds can be traced back to their early 2000’s releases, which can be taken for laziness but I prefer to think of it as consistency of style... Still, certain tracks stand out: “Untitled” - where all the layers come together in a satisfying final run, “Orthocone” - with it’s liquid, crunchy bass line, and well-implemented haunting melodic elements, “Architeuthis” and “Prehensile” - which are funkier, screamingly acidic, percussive and get very ominous and hypnotic; or the remix to the their mysterious classic: “The Entrapment of John Dory”. Overall, it’s a very solid 3/5 release and if you’re familiar with and liked Deviant Species’ “In The Hands of the Randomiser” or Scorb’s “Ipso Fvcto” you should be happy with it, because - to certain extent - it’s more of the same, just with a spit of modern polish on top. Just discogs.com here. At this point I'd probably got crazy if I had to re-enter my - humble, admittedly - collection to some other place.

I loved Agneton's debut album and recent JBC Arkadii CD, but most of the time I can't really stomach this music. Which is fine I guess - one sub-genre less to follow / discuss / buy

@Draeke & @HappyHorse - what's with the hostile posts between you two? It leads nowhere. Just ignore each other... and focus on releasing more great music on your labels

Ok, while I understand the plan, I don't get the idea behind it... What differentiates both of those releases, if they're in the same style and apparently both are full-length albums? Why one will get a physical disc, and not the other? Why not make a 2CD release, using "Lazarus Rising" - released as digital download in August - as a teaser to build up hype and expectation for *the full* thing late 2016 / early 2017? I appreciate that in the end it's artist's and label's choice to decide either way, so it's fine. --- But actually, this question extends to overall Neogoa Rec. release policy - what's the key for deciding which albums get physical release? Just looking at recent examples - why Veasna's "Energy", which got pretty mixed reception, was released on CD, while the widely acclaimed GoaD's "Galactic Aviator" wasn't? Why wasn't the universally praised V/A "The World Beyond" or "Svemirsky Hod" released on disc, while - frankly mediocre and short - Imba's "Impossible Astronaut" was? I'll understand if you don't want - or can't - answer those questions and please don't treat them as criticism of your policy. I'm eternally grateful for every Neogoa Rec. release - both digital and CDs - and I have huge appreciation & admiration for your work. But I'd like to understand the logic, if possible

Thanks. What's the plan - will physical release be completely different than Lazarus Rising? Will some tracks be repeated? Or maybe it will be 2CD with new material + Lazarus Rising? I'm a bit lost with the plan here

You mean for the non-physical release, right? The CD is still slated for late 2016 / early 2017?

If you're somehow connected to this project - judging by your nick - then why it's not being distributed via regular channels, i.e. Psyshop and Beatspace? 1st impressions are very good - it's like a faster, a bit more (positively!) full-on version of "In The Hands of The Randomiser" which I loved to bits. What was bothering me are some off-tune sounding bits and the very measured, quantized nature of it: most of sequences or one-off "sounds" start on even beats which makes it very "boxy", very clearly "sequenced". But obviously I need to give it some time. We'll see

It's out: https://trickmusic.bandcamp.com/album/indelible Downloading right now, will report soon - even if no one apparently cares

Yes, Globular is awesome - very Ott sounding, but still slightly different. Ott is more into technical wizardy, while Globular seems to be a better musician, though both of them made strides over the years to improve. Also, check Shulman's "A Live" album - not really dub, but their live take on classic Shulman' tracks makes it really special:

You can't go wrong with psydub, so I'd suggest trying those albums:

Just go back to previous page for the link... Also, I heard from reliable source that tracks on 1st CD will be edited (cut? faded out?) to fit on the CD. At first I was concerned, but apparently the downloads from bandcamp.com are already the edited versions (1st CD is just under 79min) and they sound fine to me.

I don't want in any way to suggest that you're ignorant, but I agree - knowing too much about music production does take away a lot of magic... That's why I'm always so hyped about more non-conformist stuff (like recent Nervasystem, for example) because when I listen to it I'm constantly surprised how it progresses, what kind of sounds are used, how it's all pieced together, etc. Here? It's mostly very, very good, but also very *typical* morning full-on stuff: "obvious" bass lines, chord progressions, acid tweaks, simple beats, breaks and build-ups. It's fine, but I'll know all about it after 5-10 listens.

Hmm, pretty short review but actually describes my feelings quite well: there's nothing particularly wrong with it, quite the opposite - it's very enjoyable! However, it seems to lack structure. I mean in each track, every few minutes everything changes and while normally I like that in music, here I can't shake the feeling that particular segments are not really connected to each other, almost to the point that you could pick & mix those segments between the tracks and no one would notice... Furthermore, the above underlines the fact that this music is heavily loop-based, i.e. it's very "even", "boxy" or quantised not helped by the loops usually being very short: 4 to 8 beats / kicks-long. It sounds great, it's clear that Ofer knows his craft yet the tracks somehow lack identity, their individual meaning like the ones on "Delirious" had... It definitely makes a very good first impression, with the uplifting, happy but not cheesy atmosphere but - so far - I can't see nothing more beyond that surface layer. I might need more time with it, but so far it's a strong 3/5 only.

So, it seems your Nervasystem (too psychedelic for you) is my Digicult (to cheesy for me), while we meet somewhere in between, e.g. Hypnocoustics, Master Blasters, etc.
