Wow, this thread brings back a lot of memories... For a couple of years I listened to almost nothing but clubby melodic trance, which slowly started to all sound the same (not sure if it was me or the music that changed), and I got into psy instead. Anyways... I'd consider Underworld the original "club trance," though they are surely throwbacks to an earlier era of the genre. Tracks like Rez/Cowgirl, Dark Train, Dark & Long.... it's trance of a kind for sure, and maybe the hazy vocals gave it more appeal with the clubbing crowds? Tiesto was always a cut above most other trance dj's. His mix cd Summerbreeze remains my favorite. I could probably pull that out now and still enjoy it. Sparkles (Transa Remix) is seriously powerful. Actually, Transa made some pretty good euphoric stuff, try their track Supernova. As for actual current recommendations that match what halosian was looking for, i doubt i'll be much help, as i'm hopelessly out of touch with the genre and don't have any of it on my comp anymore. But... I remember nu-nrg dreamland was a pretty popular massive track that paul van dyk played a ton in 2001 or so. Poke around for the live-set of Tiesto - Live at Innercity 1999, that's the only thing I can remember right now that sounds close to halosian's samples. peace, thanks for the trance-memories

Rain, don't take Ishkur seriously. It's just his opinion and he's mostly taking the piss anyway. I don't know many artists in this genre, but surely one of the pioneers is Richie Hawtin under his "Plastikman" guise. You'll find it either extremely subtle and innovative or extremely boring. It teeters on the edge for me. Maybe LFO - Frequencies too.

antix all the way for me. deep silky sexy smooth sounds. jaia and freq not far behind.
-
huh, if i were to judge from saikosounds' 64kbps 4 minute samples... then I would say that the new Entheo tracks sound exactly the same as their 2nd album stuff, that vibrasphere and youth are pretty predictable, and shulman was disappointing. The only standouts were Ott's remixes. But umm... I'll give this another chance with a higher quality preview. I'm still not sure I believe the hype though.

eat static's 1st Revelation on crystal skulls 2 jumps from 100 to 144. Holy War does something similar. Alien Project on Crystal Skulls 1, from 100 -> 133. A few Hallucinogen tracks (Deranger and Trancespotter) jump BPM's, you probably know them already. Talpa - First Ray of Light. 72 -> 144. Koxbox - Tokyo Nights. 135 -> 145. that should be a nice one. Slightly out of the usual trance arena, but a Lot of Ozric Tentacles tracks jump tempo. So do a lot of Shpongle tracks. Actually they have one, Monster Hit, that starts out fast and ends slow. That's unusual. That's all I'm currently aware of out of my collection.

koxbox, antix, eraser vs yojalka

great to hear it y'all, i just ordered my ticket today.

frontline assembly can be good, but are really inconsistent... What you want is Speedy J - A Shocking Hobby (album). hard industrial noise techno. I think this guy's done ambient, but this cd is very not ambient. check it.

waiting for me when I got home yesterday: Spicelab - A Day on Our Planet Total Eclipse - Access Denied Chi-A.D. - Virtual Spirit supercool. Oh, and the most expensive CD I've ever seen is Woob - 1194 for $200 US. Awesome cd, but DAMN...
-
Jaia has some very nice downtempo tracks in this vein, try the last track onBlue Energy and assort tracks on the Sky Dancing compilations. Infinity Project - Mystical Experiences. a classic in this genre. total eclipse - violent relaxation cd2 (both of the above are quite old but have been recently reprinted)

Shulman - In Search of a Meaningful Moment banco de gaia - magical sounds hallucinogen in dub ulrich schnauss - far trains passing by orb - uforb mr bungle - california tortoise - tnt, millions now living will never die amon tobin - out from out where mystery of the yeti 1 ishq - orchid jairamji - kindred spirits underworld - everything, everything the only trance album i would put on here is hallucinogen - twisted

battle of the future buddhas and old planet ben (trippy future garden) sound very dark and badtrippy to me. But, I don't think they much related to the current darkpsy fad... Oh, I also think Goa Gil should return to the "light..." Or at least vary it up a little. In 1995 he played all that uplifting spiritual stuff. now he plays tracks called "pure evil" and such? very strange to me. I've never seen the guy live, does he at least provide a flow from dark to light in his overnight sets?

What music are you listening to right now?
grahf replied to Sputum Rotgut's topic in General Psytrance
Eat Static - Area 51 (Nucleonic Mix) This is my new favorite downtempo eat static track. -
Hesius Dome - Farewell Waltz is amazing too.
-
try Plastikman, he's uberminimal

finally listened. The first thing I must say is, you have excellent track selection and flow. Going from each track to the next is just a gentle gearshift (probably not too hard with music this repetitive, if you choose the right tracks, eh?) an you maintain an overall "story arc." Individually, these are are very deep, minimal, groove-oriented tracks - any fucker can beat match them in any order they like. But to actually get the tracks to actually SAY something - which you have done - is far harder. There's almost nothing to work with except subtle changes in tone, yet the mix definitely "progresses" throughout its duration. Now, personally I didn't like some of the percussive, housier tracks near the middle of the mix as much (though they fit well in context), but that's just my preference, which you shouldn't worry about. Haha, I was just wondering if you were gonna throw any samples into this, then I heard pieces of what I assume is Vangelis. Nice. So yeah, great job, keep it up, sounds good, and all that. Many prog house dj's would kill to sound this fluid.

Oh WOW. I've wanted to see the lifeforms videos for YEARS. Their official site has only tiny thumbnail videos. Thanks much.
-
Cinos, I know what basilisk's talking about now (I think). It's the mumbling at the very beginning of the track.
-
Eraser vs Yojalka has some bits with horns/trumpets/something. Maybe Juju Space Jazz too? I don't really know.
-
Wow, some of you buy a lot of music (I'm looking mainly at ukiro and DP here). Hehe, and I thought I was bad. Last month I got: Isvara - Magik Square of the Sun Hesius Dome - Farewell Waltz Kiwa - Dreamtime Enhancer last week I got: Space Maneouvres - Oid Pole Folder - Zero Gold Legion of Green Men - Spatial Specific

Hmm, well according to Carlos Castenada, you really can fly with the correct concoction of psychotropics (datura root, yikes). But I wouldn't try that without the guidance of a Yaqui sorcerer.

Ween - Bananas and Blow makes me laugh every time.

That track is off the hizzle. How is Trancespotter tribal? Younger Brother - Dwarves has some drum samples, does that make it tribal? Nevermind. dance picks: You gotta play some Banco de Gaia. Heliopolis off Maya, also Kincajou and Kuos off Last Train, are pretty uptempo. Kuos is VERY tribal. Even better, the original dance versions of FSOL's Lifeforms and Papua New Guinea... (actually, the Andrew Weatherall or Satoshi Tomiie remixes of PNG could work good too) Unquestionably, Kiwa - Kiva Runner. Psyreviews called it "a tribal ayahuasca trip in downtown Tokyo." LOL Adham Shaikh's newest album has some tracks you might look at... I'm mainly thinking of the opening track, Opal. Chi AD - Sacred Vision. Beautiful. Kinda ambient/trance crossover. Mystery of the Yeti 1 - Tribal Gathering. name says it all. this one's real spaced out though. OMG, almost forgot! Eat Static - Forgotten Rites! Oldie but a real goodie! edit for ambient tribal: Hallucinogen - The Herb Garden Puff Dragon - Born2BWild (imploding belly dancer remix) professor trance - medicine trance (nada masala vol 1) Dub Trees (Buffalo and Orpheus and Suns of Arqa for tribal dub. Nomads of Dub - Spirals? Howabout some Orb, just to fuck with people who'll obviously be on drugs? I recommend Montagne D'Or. Or to fuck with them even more, the Akira Soundtrack? Ozric Tentacles - Toltec Spring, Valley of a Thousand Thoughts, Agog in the Ether Passengers (Brian Eno & U2) - One Minute Warning Tripswitch - Shamanic Tea Alien Soap Opera - Artificial Dream (there's a version of this I like more than the original on the MIDItation comp on Ceiba recs.) does eastern sounding count as tribal? if so, add: padmasana - a distant star Karsh Kale Amost any Makyo track. Behind the veil, pashyanti (deeply dubbed mix). Bus & Siddhartha - D (TIP Twelve) That was really fun to compile. Hope it's somehow useful.

I've had a good trading experience w/ Basilisk as well. The only limiting factor in the speed of the transaction was my laziness, rather than his attentiveness.
