  8. Artist: Sound Strider Title: Intrepid Travels EP Label: La Briche Records Date: February, 2014 01 - The Stakes (115 BPM) 02 - Menlo Park (115 BPM) 03 - Childhoods End (115 BPM) 04 - Limit (130 BPM) 05 - Betoniere (105 BPM) Gritty beats, juicy bass, and samples aplenty is what you get here. Throw in some turntablism and the recipe for nasty in a good way is there. Sometimes the percussion is off beat on purpose which is kinda cool. I feel they do themselves a disservice though with the extended length of their tracks at this slow bpm. What's that? They're not that long? So why the f*ck did it feel like I was running through pudding? Childhood Dream sounded like a slow depressive spiral where they were just f*cking with their machines. Betoniere was random messing about to my ears. The whole thing didn't have enough variation to fill the space. It's an...interesting break from the everyday I would say... In May... On a stack of hay... If you're...gay? *phone rings* "Hello? You're with who? Ah, human resources. Yes, I understand, I'll...I'll be right up" Damn, that's the third time this week. They must really like me. Free at Ektoplazm Mdk

  13. Well, i believe you know the rules already from the existing General Psytrance game, except rating can be made in numbers, letters or whatever numerical system... So, the posting and rating here involves anything non-psy relative. House genres, Techno fields, Drum & Bass breaking into the Jungle, Progressive Trance, IDM, Breaks, Chillout, Dub styles, Gabba, etc and whatever... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_nks8qUnxA
  14. Artist: Autechre TItle: Amber Label: Warp Records Date: November, 1994 1. Foil 2. Montreal 3. Silverside 4. Slip 5. Glitch 6. Piezo 7. Nine 8. Further 9. Yulquen 10. Nil 11. Teartear I don't get it. This project and this album in particular has a huge following so I figured I'd put it to the test. I don't want to piss on anyone's parade, but it's hard to see why people fawn all over this. I would put anything that Solar Fields, Aes Dana, Asura, Astropilot, or Koan has done over this. I realize it's almost twenty years old, but a classic should be a classic. The sound is techno combined with ambient textures. It's repetitive and doesn't evolve all that much. Perhaps it's a situation where those that grew up with this marked special times in their lives. Perhaps it was a soundtrack for those special and important moments. Because technically I'm not impressed. I'm ok with not liking it. That's why there is so much music out there. Something for everyone. But for those that love it, I wouldn't mind hearing why. Mdk
  15. Artist: Unikorp Title: World Traveller EP Label: DVSM Records Date: October, 2013 1. World Traveller 2. Low Gardens 3. India 4. A New Journey 5. Far Sight Thank God I don't have to be subjected to music from this assclown. There is no amount of nut punching that would allow me to atone for being a fan of his. Think his mom would mind if we tried to shove him back up her uterus? She could keep the money, but I'd say we'd have to weld that portal closed in return. I'm so glad that I listen to this music. I'd sooner crawl across broken glass soaked in the AIDS virus than have to be subjected to the crap that seems popular these days. Yeah this music has been kind to me. Not just for the music but for the incredible people I've "met" around the globe. I'm pretty good at geography, but let's be honest since that ugliness in what was once Yugoslavia occurred, I couldn't find Serbia or Croatia on a map if you pointed to it. Nonetheless, I have met more than enough people from that region and they've all been fantastic. Alex Ortegren is another one of those kind souls. Otherwise known as Kiriyama he's from Sweden and everyone knows where that is (thank you Swedish Bikini Team). Thanks to his album Reach Escape Velocity (one of the best forest/goa albums ever) I wrote him and we've kept in contact. Nothing but kindness from that guy. So when he sent me some tracks to give a listen I was only too happy to oblige. This is Renato Moreira from Portugal who also is the brains behind the LAB project. Check out his Clean Air Turbulence EP...good stuff. Now DVSM records is known primarily for the dark stuff, but this EP is a full 180 degree turn from that. I love seeing labels experiment with different genres. First thing you'll pick up on is the short track times. Aside from the 1st and third track nothing is over 4 minutes, so a sampling you shall have. World Traveller is all about the dub and the Indian chanting, mid tempo stuff. Low Garden picks up the pace and still has that dubby bass. India as you would expect has a female Indian vocal as well as instruments recognizable from that region. Near the end there is a slight flirtation with goa and that makes me smile. A New Journey has a cool break beat and clever percussion to go along with its moody atmosphere. Far Sight brings the DnB and even though I don't follow that genre at all it still sounded lush and very competent. My favorite is the bonus track called 3rd Generation as it seems nicely chaotic and warm. Totally different from what I was expecting from this label. Eerie at times, but not dark at all. He's all over the place on this one touching on numerous styles. Because of the short track times I'm not certain whether he's just experimenting with stuff to see what he likes or throwing stuff on the wall to see what appeals to people. The sound quality is top notch as it was mastered by none other than Colin "OOOD" Benunm. Another cool aspect is the interactive site which has a really good design. Thanks for the listen gentlemen. 16. Astroschnautzer – Twå Album: Twå Artist: Astroschnautzer Genre: IDM, Glitch Label: Freudian Slip Records When: May 2013 Size: 161MB License: CC Price: Free and Donations Track List: 01 - Yks 02 - Twå 03 - Weird-O Komp-O 04 - Plan C 05 - Vapaaehtoinen Taidebiisi 06 - Worm Song 07 - Walkman 08 - Muukalais-Dub 09 - Aalto 10 - Korton 11 - Dögge 12 - Bb-Dub 13 - Psyko-Paatti 14 - Snapper Tuna 15 - Aa:n Kahvila 16 - Space Humppa Although definitely interesting, slightly entertaining, and unique, the clattered clinking and scratching of Twå has a lot of room for improvement. This glitchy full-length album contains a series of seemingly random tracks that go all across the borders with drum n bass, ambient, glitch-hop, IDM, breakbeat, and lo-fi techniques. Experimenting with different styles, Astrochnautzer takes us through some glitchafied, drum-stepping, bit crushed projects. There are a few really sweet tracks on here, but at the same time there are some that should have simply been left out. Focusing on the classics with a boost of his own originality, the artist brings some chilled and mellow personalities with an added spray of freshness and downright quirkiness. The balance between the two, however, is unenjoyable at times. There needs to be more structure and organization to the “uniqueness” captured in each track. Snapper Tuna, for example, leaves a well balanced, smoothly progressive, and satisfying taste in my mouth. Worm Song is one of the tracks that does the opposite, based around a series of unfitting sounds that can prompt headaches. To the artist, I would strongly recommend taking this album as a great learning experience. It seems to be highly experimental, dabbling inside never-personally-done-before ideas. It is always good to try out new things so you can improve and expand your style. In fact, I urge people to reach out for new innovations. In this case, I suggest walking away from most tracks in this album, honing in to the better compositions. Snapper Tuna, Plan C, and Korton. Stay away from too many voice samples, bit crushed wobbles, and unfitting synth zaps and drum smashes. Everything needs to be done in moderation, as I like to say. Keep your chill like attitude and progress your tracks to have more meaningful climaxes, leaving the listener craving for that certain sappy synth. Spend more time crafting your sounds and it will be very rewarding. Think of it like this: Every sound is a puzzle piece. Put each sound together to form the perfect picture. If you put together pieces that don’t fit, the picture won’t make much sense. Keep up your hard work and good luck with your glitch experiments! 6/10 Download here on Ektoplazm (MP3, FLAC, WAV) - Review by FatKidWitaJetPak (Nick Sumbles) - Special Thank to Ektoplazm for the download bandwidth.

  20. Artist: Atman Construction Title: Elysian Terraform Label: Liquid Seed Recordings Date: December, 2012 01 - Aventurescence (143 BPM) 02 - Parallax View (143 BPM) 03 - Solipsysm (135 BPM) Three things I know: One, the striking artwork is done by Paul Sargent Two, it's mastered by Colin Oood Bennun. And three, I have no idea who is the mind behind this project. So I can only assume it is aliens who are not ready to reveal themselves to us as of yet. And it sounds like what aliens might make. They take everything that they hear and put it into a track. Downtempo with glitchy effects as well as sounds that aren't from this planet. It can be aggressive and relaxing often within the same track. But don't think you're gonna take a nap with this one. It is outstandingly lush with layers of sonic goodness that can be noisy and then float worthy. Recommended. What the hell you got going over there Basilisk? Free at Ektoplazm Mdk
  21. So this is probably the most interesting mix I've ever done. Firstly, I want to make sure everyone understands that the title of the mix or the genre tag "braindance" is implying no sort of pretentious measure of intelligence on the listener, to where only "smart people" can listen to this. However, you must enter this mix with an open mind. I have ventured into some very experimental territory, playing tracks with rich textures, crystal-clear melodies, and neuron-tickling soundscapes that rely heavily on glitching and programming. I had an awesome time making this. 22. Artist: Aural Planet Title: 5 EX Engine Label: Vivo Date: 2002 1. Paleo 2. Stimulation Part 3 3. Subtropolis 10893 4. Subtropolis 10893 (Crankshaft Blossmx) 5. Subtropolis 10893 (Auralp rmx) 6. Necrodelica 7. Upsilon 8. Phoebus 9. Costa Del Nymphos 10. Gene 11. Subtropolis 10893 (Nemezis Rmx) I'm sorry what the f*ck? This is Jacek Dojwa, Konrad Gmurek, Radosław Kochman, and Adam Skorupa from Poland who later became Sundial Aeon. They no longer release music as this project, but they have to be one of the most varied acts I have ever heard. Other than the train wreck that continues to call itself Infected Mushroom of course. Their first album Lightflow was a downtempo and ambient gem followed up by Part: Seconde which was some awesome goa trance. This is their 3rd full length release and they have officially left the reservation and gone rogue. "You betcha! Pew! Pew!" Nothing wrong with trying to stretch the creative legs right? Paleo- What begins as a slow industrial moody sumb*tch turns into a drum n bass/Jungle rocker that is heavy on the distortion. It's like Mario just said f*ck it and started banging on pipes. Throw in an airy female cry and all of a sudden I'm looking over my shoulder. Very futuristic and awesome Dance with me sprocket! Stimulation (part Three)- "I keep thinking that what we need is a new language. A language of the heart." This is Aural Planet correct? Heavy technoid beats and farty bass pound one out while a sample tells me not to move. Kinda hard though because this is funky sh*t. DnB and jungle riffs join the party and I am really wondering what I've just stepped in. Subtropolis 10893- This is the first of four versions of the same track. Usually I don't like where that's going, but let's see what happens. With a futuristic and industrial sounding breakbeat we are off. It begins to get a little cluttered even though the very hard hitting bass slam is present thoughout. And when the hell did Blade Runner get here? Saxophone? Interesting. Subtropolis 10893 (Crankshaft Blossmx)- There are more melodies here and he upped the glitch factor as well. The break slinks like it's trying not to be noticed and there is a whole eerie presence. I'm picturing liquid silver rolling on black marble and I have no idea why. I liked it better than the original until it sounded like my tape just got ate up. Remember cassetes? No. You probably don't. Subtropolis 10893 (Auralp rmx)- With some clunky loops a dubby beat forms the foundation. Now these guys know how to do remixes. If I didn't have the tracklist there is no way I would know these were remixes. It's noiser in a non melodic way with effects banging away like he was in a factory somewhere. Meh. Necrodelica- "There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission." No but there is something wrong with my player. It's making these harsh, shrill sounds that me no likey. That sample? Hope you like it because they beat you over the head with it. Upsilon- Like the rest of the tracks it sounds very electronic and cold with a heavy techno beat. Phoebus- The funky electro breakbeat has some appeal as electronic effects that sound like the whales song hum throughout. But it didn't stay with me. Like Arby's. Costa Del Nymphos- More breakbeat electro all up in your earhole. And just like that...it's forgotten. Gene- Floaty downtempo with a hammond organ I believe. Very trippy, and actually warm. Probably my favorite along with Paleo. Subtropolis 10893 (Nemezis Rmx)- The last remix of this track and it sounds nothing like the original so good stuff there. The saxophone is distorted and scratchy as other electronic sounds are strangled over top. Sounds of bottle being knocked over, birds chirping, One thing I will say is that this is very different from any of their previous releases. It's very electronic with a futuristic feel. It's also all over the genre map. Techno, industrial, breakbeat, DnB,...everything but trance. Nice to listen to something that isn't in 4/4 time and hi-hats blazing. Most of the tracks are fairly short compared to psychedelic styles as only 2 are over 7 minutes. There wasn't a standout track for me, but the journey was enjoyable. I would recommend it for a listen, but it wouldn't be something that I would listen to regularly. Mdk

Dust Particle is the free debut EP release from mote from Brisbane, Australia; a carefully crafted sonic sculpture inspired by the journey of space dust floating through the atmosphere. With melodies shimmering like dust glinting in the morning sun, and orchestration that lulls you into a sweet melancholia; dust particle leaves you with a taste of things to come. Artwork by Lewis Smart (AsylumSeaker) Mastering by Felix Greenlees (Terrafractyl) Released 22/01/2012 http://www.mote-music.bandcamp.com also now available on Ektoplazm! http://www.ektoplazm...e-dust-particle
