What you need is Fahrenheit Project, either one of them is just as good as the other one. Very hypnotic and psychedelic (in a different way than eg. Shpongle), listen before you buy though.

Sorry, Mose, it's a joke on "melodic vs. minimal".

I think that technically the rhythmic melodic stuff like Shpongle, Mystery of the Yeti, etc., is chill-out, while non-rhythmic soundscape type stuff is ambient, but they're often used interchangably now.

I just listened to some samples by Shulman, and it sounds pretty good. Try www.shulman.info.

To my mind, you can chill out to stuff which isn't ambient. Ambient music is stuff which is (atleast as I understand it) more about the textures of sounds than the tune or melody. Chill out music just means that - music which helps you relax. Ambient music can help you chill out, though some can have an unsettling effect and hence perhaps is the opposite (some of Aphex Twin ambient works volume II is certainly not calming!). On the other hand, producers like Asura, Shpongle and most of the other psychedelic trance spin-off acts make chillout which is certainly not ambient - there are beats, there is psychedelic noising and samples, but the overall effect is relaxing and brings you down from dancefloor music.

That's the difference in my opinion.

So for ambient artists I can recommend Brian Eno, some of Aphex Twin, some of Autechre, Biosphere, Steve Roach etc. etc.

For chillout, basically see any of the chillout section of the reviews...

For ambient also check out Phaedra by Tangerine Dream. Don't worry, it sounds nothing like most of their crap. Just ambient soundscapes ranging from pleasant to scary.

Whaou, trying to define Ambient and Chill-Out is not so easy..... Something like trying to differenciate House from Hard-House from Nu-Energy (4 exemple...hé hé)

It's such an occidental need to give a name to everything...... No matter the style you're listening when the music just make u move & smile !

However in Chill-Out, nice tunes are on Corrosive Breaks (atomic), the spirit zone's Global Psychedelic Chill-Out (1,2,3), BNE's Future Sound of Ambient, and many many more.....

Just do what Bomble wrote U, basically see any of the chillout section of the reviews...

Ciao ciao

Well, unlike most others here, I don't think Shpongle can be called chill-out, at least not "Tales of the Inexpressible". "Are You Shpongled" is mostly chill-out, but I think that overall, Shpongle isn't so chilly. Maybe upbeat chill-out, but is there such a thing? The word "Fusion" comes to my mind as a good description for Shpongle. Maybe "psychedelic fusion" or something. Electronic fusion, perhaps?
