Best IDM

Hey guys. Let me start by explaining the funny way that i got started listening to electronic Music. I heard the first song on Orbital's Second album. The One with the guy saying "input translation" or something like that. I was strangely intrigued and continued listening to the album. I fell in love and was extremely happy that there was really great music and now i knew that the radio had just been missing it :P Anyway, after purchasing a few more Orbital albums, i oddly enough purchased the album Tri Repite ++ by Autechre on the recomendation of a freind. As some of you might know, IDM and Digital is some of the hardest music to listen to. When i heard the song "Clipper" i was comepletely blown away!!! So minimal and simplistic yet.... infinately complex! It was great. The same friend that recommended autechre played the song Ionized by Astral Projection like a week later and the Psytrance part of me fell into place. In the last few years i have developed a deep love for electronic music of any kind... From Orbital to Space-Time Continuum to Astral Projection and MFG to Biosphere and The Higher Intelligence Agency to Autechre and Squarepusher. Lately i have really been digging on the IDM scene, good IDM just moves me like nothing else. I have a feeling that alot of you here probably like IDM as well and I was just wondering if Any of you had any recommendation for me :-)

And by the way.... if you havn't ever heard the songs Clipper, Bike, and Montreal by autechre, YOU NEED TO!!!!

Later All.

I too also have a great love for IDM, favourite artist is definately Squarepusher although I'm not too sure what happened to him as his most recent release wasn't very good. Everytime I hear Tundra, the love for that track is still the same as when I heard it the first time - beautiful, dark, epic like melody.. Some new IDM you should look out for is Manitoba, the CD is called "start breaking my heart", A Canadian guy who's obviously drawn influences from Aphex, Autechre and the like to create a wonderful yet still unique sound that gets better with every listen. Mouse on Mars are a great band and also check out Matmos "A chance to cut is a chance to cure", very experimental.. This guy has crafted most of this album by recording sounds that frequently occur in hospitals, ie surgery procedures. You have to hear it.. They're are soo many more IDM groups that reak quality. maybe check out www.allmusicguide.com. The info on IDM is good, much better then the info they have on Psy trance. Enjoy - peace...

static

styrofoam

boards of canada

ulrich schnauss

manual

phonem

mum

isan

christian klein

aphex twin and squarepusher are genius but there's more to intelligent electronic than glitch(least i think so).

IDM stands for Intelligent Dance Music although I think 90% isn't suitable for dancing to at all! Stupid name. I prefer Intelligent or Listening Techno.

Check out anything by The Black Dog (who arguably invented IDM) esp. the albums Bytes & Spanners.

The better half of the Black Dog producers left the band and make music under the name Plaid. Check out anything by Plaid coz their music is so genius and beautiful it's out of this world.

Nowadays most IDM is very abstract, dark and rhythm-based, but Plaid is mostly very melodic and uplifting. To me they are the best in the genre.

Other albums I strongly recommend are: Autechre (Incanabula & Amber), Speedy J (G-spot & Ginger), B12 (Time tourist), Boards of Canada (Music has the right for children), Arovane (Atol scrap), LFO (Advance), Human Beings (For the time being) and definitly check out the brilliant Artificial Intelligence compilations on Warp recs. the classic series that shaped the IDM sound.

The ultimate IDM label is Warp records. Check their website for more info and soundclips from all these bands.

I personally don't dig IDM much. I love the Spanners album of Black Dog but the stuff released lately such the new Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada (Geogaddi) are just a tad 2 abstract and pretentious for me...Its not alive enough, too technoish...lacks song structure...

The popular press may love IDM but I think the psyambient stuff on the LiquidSoundDesign label for example is just as complex but far more pleasant to listen to...I prefer actual songs with head and tail rather than soundscapes that go nowhere...But maybe I am just not stoned enough...

IDM is a stupid name. I really wanna see the first person who actually dances on Autechre or Squarepusher or Plaid. And why intelligent? If psytrance isn't IDM, then we're listening to 'dumb' en 'commercial' music. right? right !.

So stop putting everything in little boxes with a label on it. Screw the genres, just listen, make and share it with others.

If someone asks me to what kind of music I listen to, then my answer is always 'the music which me makes me feels good'.

Spectral Collapse, check Luke Vibert aka Wagon Christ.

Thanks for all the input guys. Don't get me wrong either Soulhunter, I don't like to catagorize music any more than you do... but its easiar to ask a question when people know what you're talking about you know what I mean :P

Amon Tobin is amazing check out his track called Nightlife..

Also, look into a new group called Telefon Tel Aviv. Very nice.. kinda chill, but really rhythmic at the same time.

Soulhunter: I guess you're wantin' to se me, because I cut the floor up for Squarepusher, and do a good bit of shimmyin' for Plaid. Almost fell over from exhaustion at the Aphex show. But, I agree, they aren't really dance music (except for me and a few other people). I think the term got attached to them by music industry types, who associate electronic = dance. Just a guess, though.

Funny you say geogaddi is too technoid miles, because I think this is the less technoid of all idm.

I've been really into idm for a couple of months now, and I'm starting to like most of it. I'd like to add Brothomstates - Claro, Jake Mandell - Parallel processes, Proem - Negativ, twerk - I'm rendered useless, Xingu Hill - Alterity

Autechre - Cichli Suite is the best they've done imho.

Alternative definition more suitable for idm : independant digital music ;)
