most releases on vinyl lose money. some make money, if it's more progressive stuff that a lot of germans will by, but often a release on vinyl will lose money - sometimes people still release vinyl so that vinyl djs will play it, and people will hear it and buy the cds - so it's more of a promotional thing for the cd. but as the vinyl djs grow less and less, especially in the non-progressive areas, so to do vinyl releases.

i might not be right about that, tho. i'm using parts of my brain that i only just got access to it, and i might have dreamt the whole thing. but it's a pretty convincing story, huh?

tom,

i think your argument is overly circular, i.e. you're not establishing a clear chain of causality.

let me explain:

your line of reasoning is that as the number of vinyl djs decrease (assuming this rate _is_ negative), than record sales will decrease, so there will be fewer vinyl releases; assuming that companies release vinyl to make money (which is, like you said, not necessarily the case w/ psytrance).

but the reverse could just as easily produce the same effect, i.e. if labels decide (for whatever reason: it doesn't matter in this case) not to release as many records, this means there's less of a market for vinyl, which means potential djs are turned off to that medium, which then leads to the decrease in the number of vinyl djs. and now we're exactly where we started, that is, the argument is completely circular.

frankly, there are plenty of labels who make money selling vinyl. witness any label who releases more 12"s than cd's. i happen to be fortunate, because a lot of my favorite labels (digital strucures/baluns, spiral trax/acdc, iboga) are firmly entrenched in releasing vinyl. (although, ironically enough, one could say this is also circular, b/c I probably got into these labels b/c I listened to their releases on vinyl........ you get the idea ;)
