Guest bugbread
Two issues. First, Matt, lately you've been posting quite a bit against MP3s, but how do you reconcile this with the fact that you share music on AudioGalaxy? Second: before I got DSL, I bought 2 or 3 CDs per month. After getting DSL, I buy 2 or 3 CDs a month and download maybe 8. I understand that MP3s are killing the music industry, but is this action by myself really causing any negative effects? If I weren't downloading MP3s, I'd still spend the same amount in CDs, the artists would still receive the same amount of money, etc. I posit that while much of MP3 pirating is bad, not ALL of it is harmful. I don't mean to imply that it's beneficial, just that it's often a non-issue.
Guest Mike D
I have some pirated cd's and god do I hate them! They have no artwork or crappy printer quality, the mp3 sound quality on good stereo is a shocker when you crank it up and also I must agree that the artist loses out! Seriously, pop starts do not make even near as much money as say a movie star, but how many of you pay to go see the lates film or get out the video? Think about it, Elysium says an artist sgets about 14%, $1-1.5 per cd sold. Britney Spears selss what? 3 million cd's? That is 3-4.5 million dollars, then look at what the movie actor gets for one film! $40million+! And even though I do not enjoy britney's music, it is a lot harder to make music of any kind than to act in dodgey action flicks, and yes, I do not people who act and who have done study at uni n the area! I know that if my dream of running a small tekno lable cam true, I would most likely be out of pocket for a damn long time, maybe never breaking even, but I want to do it for the love of music, for the fact that I know I can creat pleasurable music! Guest Elysium Project
It seem to me that you bugbread will say anything to justify your downloads! Sorry but it's a lame excuse when you say that and I quote! : " If I weren't downloading MP3s, I'd still spend the same amount in CDs" Well good for you but does that make it more legid? No my friend it won't! So what you are saying is that i makes it more ok to download 8 CD's because you bought 3? This is the same as saying "I bought 1 pair of trouser and now I think it's fair that I get the T-shirt and jacket for free" Last you say that you understand that the downloading kill the industry but do not think that your actions cause it...well sorry for laughing here! but if that's the same attitude that every single "mp3 junkie" have (and I suspect it) then we artists are surely doomed! Guest bugbread
Elysium: Regarding "what you are saying is that i makes it more ok to download 8 CD's because you bought 3"...Nope, neither said nor implied it. All I'm saying is that buying 3 CDs and downloading 8 is no more damaging to the industry than buying 3 CDs and downloading 0. If you try to make comparisons to limited commodities (like pants), you're comparing apples and oranges. The only way that comparison would be valid is if this were justification for shoplifting actual CDs. The post wasn't intended to be a justification of my downloading. But you seem to be sidestepping my question. How does my downloading of CDs that I would not otherwise purchase damage the industry? Yes, it's an often used excuse. Yes, it's an attitude held by other pirates. But none of that addresses the question I'm asking. I am NOT asking about other MP3 owners, general piracy, etc. I am being specific. My question, again, is: --> Is this action by myself really causing any negative effects? How?
