Tatsu
i'm in the same state of djing as you mijis. if the two records have the same speed i don't have a problem but i really can't hear how faster the different tracks are. so i had to get a beatcounter for my mixer too. just wonder how professionel djs hear that little differences?! Tatsu
i know its cheating and also lazy but hey, i'm not planning to play at parties or anything. i just want to be able to mix some tapes or mds at home and have a little fun. so i don't think it really matters for me to use a counter. i also noticed that after using the counter a lot i hear the difference between the tracks a little better. not that i would be able to mix them together or anything. maybe its also because i know the records better now. soon i will have two cdjs, maybe i will start practice again without counter with them. my deks are quite cheap, so maybe it's also a little their fault that i have to use the counter... ;-)
Guest [tom jaimz]
Knowing which track is faster and which is slower is something you have to learn. Knowing the BPMs does help, but it's not everything. As a rough guide.. to pitch something that's 142bpm up/down 1 bpm you will have to change the pitch by about 0.7%. For 2 bpm, change it by 1.4%, and so on. However this number [0.7] is not precise, and will change depending on your starting bpm - dropping for higher bpms, raising for lower bpms. For example, to change a track at 150bpm by 3 bpm, you will need to alter the pitch by 2.0%, not 2.1%. Also, at the other end of the scale, a track at 137bpm will have to be pitched 2.2% to be changed 3 bpm.. This is mixing by maths.. and it's not foolproof. But it does leave you with a much smaller margin of error, which means you can find the groove a lot quicker. But you still need to learn to find the groove. :-) Oh, and another thing. Learn to count to 4. And learn to count to four four times in a row. This helps. ;-)

Guest bugbread
question for DJs: your first track is 136 BPM, and the ENTIRE rest of your set is beatmatched (no sample mixing). Does this mean your entire set must be 136 BPM, or do you pitch things up during swirly parts without drums?
Guest mijis
no you can combine a lot of bpm in your mix
