Guest dam10n
depends what your after - shulman is fine psychedelic ambient, ishq is more proper ambient, early aphex twin is essential, plastikman's artefacts is interesting, and stuff listed at www.ambientmusic.co.uk is more deep type of stuff. Otto Matta
There appear to be several sub-genres of ambient music, not all of which are to everybody's tastes (most will like one or two a lot, the others not at all). The major sub-genres I've experienced are: 1. Psy-ambient/Chill-out: Dub/reggae/world-influenced electronica. 2. Space Ambient: Lush atmospheres with little or no beats. 3. Minimal Ambient: Highly synthetic blips, beeps and beats. 4. IDM: Synthetic, full sound, lots of rhythm. 5. Future-jazz/lounge: Ambient with a jazzy twist. 6. Dark Ambient: A combination between 1. and 2. but dark. My personal recommendations in these fuzzy categories: 1. I'm not a specialist or a fan in this one. Orb is popular and was one of the pioneers of the genre. Check the reviews here. 2. Pete Namlook (and friends), Tetsu Inoue, Biosphere, Ashera, Brian Eno 3. shuttle358, Arovane, Sogar 4. Plaid, Boards of Canada, Bola, Orbital, Global Goon 5. Not an expert. Highly recommend Fognode. 6. Robert Rich, Vidna Obmana

bomble
The thing is there's just sooooo much out there! Emos Dale has listed many of the A-list in terms of what should be accessible from the starting point of a taste for psy trance. And EA is totally spot on about the styles of chillout available. I figured I mention a few more well known essentials and then a list of things I really like that should be explored once you've covered the A-list... Dub Trees Kumba Mela Experiment Padmasana Ochi Brothers Subsurfing Digital Mystery Tour The B list is not necessarily less good than the A list - just less immediately related to psy trance... Toires Afro Celt Sound System Jon Hopkins Sounds from the Ground Children of Dub Angel Tears Global Communication Aural Float Spectre Deep Dive Corp Woob Anahata Loop Guru Healer Dreadzone Ekko Foundland Ju Ju Space Jazz Sanjiva TJ Rehmi The Irresistible Force that should get you started!!! Of course, there are essential compilations too... but I suggest you visit the chillout reviews section and see what you find there. let me know if you want more details about any of these bomble
Guest fuzzhead
Epic Automata: Your descriptions of different ambient styles is very accurate!! I dont have much to add well here is some great ambient album that i love right now: Pete Namlook and Wolfram Spyra - Virtual Vices very nice spacey sounds with little melodies and some jazzy elements, it has LOTS of long drawn-out low bass that fits in perfectly. great for relaxing, but not sleep. A great album for sleeping: Pete Namlook and Tetsue Inoue - 2350 Broadway II you will fall right asleep with it, its so friken relaxing. These are on the FAX label heres a good site with info about them: http://www.2350.org/artist/Pete+Namlook/

Guest ZaRAMaTU
Listen to: Klaus Schulze - Crystal Lake Klaus Schulze - Schwanensee 1 Der Spyra - Seasons Der Spyra - Subterranean Gardens No THAT'S music! Too bad Mozart isn't alive to hear that stuff. Totally amazing. But I definitely say that both Schulze and Wolfram Spyra kicks Pete Namlooks ass! Or they all have their ups and downs, but I say Schulze and Der Spyra are the greatest. Pete Namlook is TOO ambient for me. I don't like music that puts you into sleep just like that. I think it's quite scary, actually. But Crystal Lake and Schwanensee Part 1 is masterpieces of the ages, no doubt!

Guest green mouse
bomble, how do you define the relationship to psytrance of your A and B list...for one thing...Angel Tears from your B list is a project of Seb Taylor (Shakta)....
bomble
Green Mouse, I know it's a bit arbitrary - but I would say that Angel tears is more in line with say Deep Forest than it is say Shpongle. I should probably have made no distinction, just made a list. bomble
Guest flix
A couple of my favourite chill-out songs: Jaija - Sommeil Paradoxal Infected Mushroom - Dancing with Khadafi Pleiadians - Deep Frequencies A lot of people regard Biosphere as one of the best 'normal' ambient artists. Aphex Twin ambient works shouldn't be missed as well!
