DJ-mixes: Tips for smoother mixes

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I mixed a new MiniDisc with my CDJs and I'm not very satisfied with it. I did beatmix it but the part when I fade a new track in, it sounds very harsh. I haven't spend much time mixing and I'm not so skilled so this is for sure first part of the problem. But still, I think it should be possible, even with my skills, to make better crossings. Sometimes the tracks (or the parts of the tracks I mix together) just don't match very good, then it's clear why it sounds bad. But I have made combinations of tracks that sound good when played together but still the part when I fade in is not sounding to harsh. I can't explain any better but maybe you still understand what I mean. Maybe someone has some comments or tips for me? Maybe it is better to fade in very, very slow or to even don't use the crossfader but the button for the immediate addition of the second CDJ?

Personally, I hardly ever use the crossfader. I feel I have more control without it. The best thing to do is know which frames match which. In addition to beat matching, you have to know where a track should be mixed in/out. Knowing every aspect of your music helps, along with practice.

Most of the time, when beatmatching, it is alot easier to bring in bass first, and usually leads to what in my opinon, less harsh transitions. However, this assumes the bass lines match well.

Remember, not EVERY track can be matched.

Hey Tatsu, I dont use the crossfader at all when I mix a track in. I use it later on in the mix (But thats another subject). Why dont you fade the track in with the channel slides/faders? That way you dont get a "punched" hard sounding mix. I use it that way.

The problem might be the curve of your crossfader, some of the mixers out there are made for scratching, and therefor when you move the crossfader the SLIGHTEST to the second channel it punches in.

If you have a look on your mixer, you MIGHT find a CF Curve knob, that might help aswell. I know I have one. Depending on your brand, it might also be called Crossfader Pattern, CF Pattern or similar. The one that you look for is the "pattern" or curve that looks like an X

Did I explain that well? Oh well, I made you a little illustration (As my camera is acting up at the moment :( )

Thanks for the tips! I will try the sugestions from Nemo with the chanel faders, maybe this will help. Sounds like a good idea. I listened to my mix again with headphones and I've found out, that with one or two transitions I had the second track much louder than the first one (the one allready playing) and this can't lead to any good.

Anyway, I'll keep you informed and maybe ask for some more help... B)

yeah, i think im basically just repeating what nemo said...but yeah, when i mix i always have the crossfader positioned at its middle point...and then i mix with the channel faders from there...it definately makes for a smoother mix..just have to make sure to drop the channel fader from the channel that is currently playing down a little bit as u raise the other one up...ive forgot to do this so many times and all of a sudden the volume doubles and it can be extremely unpleasant...

anyways...i think im just stating the obvious..

btw, tatsu, im playing live at a party in switzerland on new years, if u're interested u can check out all the details on this link: Psychedelic Mountain Lodge

cheers!

I didn't have the time to try out your suggestions so far, but I'm sure they will work. I guess I coudl still use the crossfader but also use the chanel faders. It's worth a try at last.

The link to the party doesn't work! I'd really like to know more about the party, line-up, location... Could you fix the link?

Now it works, maybe the server was down or something. Looks nice, but how big is it? The call it a Berghaus, is it outdoor for some parts? Would be funny to see you, but I don't know if I go to a party outside Bern for New Year's Eve. Thanks for the info anyway! :)
