zee_werp
Hello peoples, I've heard talk of 'set your latency as low as possible' for when you're making live adjustments / automations in sequencer programs. I was wondering, how do I do this? I take it it has something to do with the soundcard. Also I'm wondering how to generally optimise the sound performance of my computer? I'm only using a Creative Audigy2 soundcard, which is average, so I want to push it to get the best sounds possible for what I have. One thing I've noticed is that when I am playing some tunes in winamp, and I go to do some other stuff like open up some browser windows, this can interrupt a track and make a little glitch / pause kind of sound. But I know this shouldn't happen, I have 3 gigs of processor and 1024 RAM, my girlfriend has a slower machine and her winamp never glitches. How can I give things like this and my music making programs the highest priority of processor speeds etc? Any tips on this sort of thing would be much appreciated

Look at http://www.asio4all.com/ . Once you have that set up, you can use those drivers instead of your wdm. Well, I have heard people that get a 2ms latency in reason with their Audigy cards, so thats not too bad hehe The other thing that you might want to look up for performance of your music computer is the page http://www.musicxp.net . As for your WinAMP problem, I would suggest that you have some Cache setting that isnt right. Fiddle around with the settings and you will probably see that there is something that you can do to enhance the performance.
zee_werp
Thanks djnemo, you're such a helpful guy!!! Also, I know I am a complete noob, and feel free to whack me with the 'stoopid stick', but where / how do I fiddle around with my cache settings, I mean what do I need to set it at for good winAMP performance, and good music program running? (Another thing I've found is that if I'm running FLstudio and another program like soulseek in the background, I go to save a file in FLstudio and all of a sudden it gets very distorted and glitchy...so annoying). Thats most probably where its gone wrong. Dont worry about being a noob, everyone is a noob in the beginning no? Thats why we have forums like these, to help you get going with what is most important, making music! The FL Studio thing is probably because your drivers are not properly configured. Did you try Asio4All yet? There you also have to play with the buffers a little bit. I had that with a very old soundcard and reason, and when I set the buffer higher, I didnt have the problem, but the latency of course is higher then too. You will have to test your self around, until you find the right setting for your soundcard. If I am not totally wrong, there is a lot of pages around making music with the Audigy card, but I dont have any URL's at hand. Google around a little bit, and you will probably find what I am talking about
zee_werp
Cool, thanks a lot. I downloaded + installed Asio4ALL, and checked out that MusicXP site, going to have a fiddle around and maybe some google searching later this evening...its too much of a beautiful day for me to be doing it now, I'm going to go outside and chill in the sunshine (gotta love the southern hemisphere )
zee_werp
OK guys I've tried fiddling around with some settings, and it still seems to be a problem!! I looked around through google and stuff, found a lot of websites on things that sounded similar to mine, but all of them seemed to be old websites for windows 98 etc. Like I said, I've got 1024 RAM, so I don't see why my winamp goes glitchy anytime I open up another (even small) program. Also its still been going glitchy in FLstudio, even while not actively running any other applications. It would be really good if someone could give me some specific info on this cache stuff, I found a lot on internet cache but not much info about hard disk cache. Where do I go to adjust it? What settings should I have it at? Having this stuttering / distortion / delay / lag time going on in a new computer is getting frustrating!
