Lemmiwinks
1. Vinyla sky 2. Spun 3. Funky 4. Albert Balbert (Album version) 5. Melodrama 6. Rearranged 7. Stringadelic 8. Frog N Roll 9. Bass Ratz 10. Adish 2004 has been an interesting year for psytrance... other than the continuation of past trends (full-on, progressive/ minimal,...) we have also witnessed more rare occurances like the comeback of oldschool ( Ypsilon 5, Filteria ) and the creation of yet some new sub-genres. They don't yet have an "official name" but I call the first "epic psy" ( Misted Muppet, Synsun ) because of the melodic parts that remind of what is described as "epic" in black metal and the second which I call "NES psy" because the melody structures reminds me that of old 80s NES games. Lani - Our Way to the Sun was the first one in that "genre" and now comes this: Vibe Tribe - Melodrama . So if full-on is described by many as "cheese" then I guess that this should be called "super-cheese"... But I should also warn you that for me "cheese" isn't necesarily a BAD thing, after all, old AP and Yahel were also described as "cheese" in their time and I liked them For me, track by track description is a little pointless... all the tracks sound alike: EXTREMELY cheesy melodies all over, although I found it sounded more "serious" than Lani . This stuff could work well if you played one or 2 tracks in a morning set, and is also a bliss to listen to in your car CD-player when returning home from the party, or simply for lying around your garden in summer... Conclusion: so it seems that Lani gave birth to a new genre: "ultra-cheesy psy" or "NES psy"... now it is followed by this. Personally I find this a bit more "serious" than Lani (and thus better). It might not be to the like of everyone but it IS nice to listen to for a change. I also should say that this kind of cheese is different from "full-on cheese" so if you're tired of "the full-on sound", that doesn't necesarily mean that you won't like this. Rating is hard because it's really a matter of context: 9/10 when listening in a car coming home from a psy party, 6/10 when listening to at night... Ale
Psytrance go to euro epic trance, sorry but i find it cheesy. FILTERIA/ELECTRIC UNIVERSE or LEMURIANS/THE MISTED MUPPET are the good way.
Basilisk
Hmm... uhh... err... strikes me as the successor to Trivia, early Luminus, and that sort of thing. I have the feeling I might despise it after 3 listens.
Alek
ok hot shot, so tell me how this is similar to stuff BEFORE Lani... I heard Basilisk say that it sounded like the succession of early Luminus... personally I find the 2 have NOTHING in common... For me, these "80s NES melodies" is something new (not necesarily something GOOD, but something that's never been done before...). Of course, having 2 albums in a similar style can hardly be called a "trend", you need to wait a year or 2 to see how it all works out in the end. I was just commenting on new sounds and new melody structures... And indeed, genres are for librarians but isn't it librarians who point people out to books they like? 204846 I ain't no hot shot mister, and there really is no need to get so deffensive. There's this thing called euro trance... and octave-jumping basslines, dramatic brakes and happy melodies are what make it similar to Vibe Tribe and Lani. With Lani being more "minimal" if you ask me... but the basis is still there.
seraph
Lemmi, you are so funny giving grades for different occasion example : This album is 9/10 when listening in car after party and 6/10 when listening to at night...Don't you find it silly ? If you are giving grades give some objective point about the album, not it sounds like this in the night, and like this in the morning. It is childish and I accepted you as some kind of serious trance listener. I am just suggesting cause it sounds silly defining things and grading non stop. Don't get me wrong, I am not shitting on you, just that sometimes you tend to too much define stuff...Cheers
Guest Rain
Lemmi, you are so funny giving grades for different occasion example : This album is 9/10 when listening in car after party and 6/10 when listening to at night...Don't you find it silly ? 204922 no I don't find this silly... I understand lemmi opinion a lot... lots of psytrance sound better at night or in the morning... some is better to listen when you still have to go to a party others when you just got home from a party... don't see you point hear??? I totally agree Vibe tribe isn't that creepy strong sound that hunt's you in the night but is pure melody that is ment for sunrise... true, it is a very subjective way to express an album but I think it's impossible to create objective psytrance reviews... still respect all kind of opinions
Lemmiwinks
thank you Rain Indeed, some albums sound good all the times while others sound good only at times and bad at others. I don't know if this makes any sense but to me that's just how it is. For example, I'd be happy to hear 1200 Mics - Hashish at day OR night but something like Vibe Tribe would make me wanna puke in the night but I'd like it at day... on the other hand, I'd like to listen to Parasense/ Penta at night but not at day It's not silly to rate stuff this way, I'm just rating it how it feels to my ears

Trolsk
Vibe Tribe – Melodrama – Utopia Records 2004 I had not heard of Vibe Tribe until everyone started to talk about “Albert Balbert”. I downloaded the “Timeless” compilation (download, evaluate, buy or delete) and was greeted by the usual israeli presets. The “Albert Balbert” tune caught my attention though. It had this goa vibe; melodies, samples and story. Since then I’ve been waiting for their upcoming album. The album unfortunately turned out to be yet another Infected Mushroom clone. I love melodies, but this is just too boring and simple. If you like Infected Mushrooms recent albums I’m sure you’ll love this one though. My advise: try Misted Muppet’s “From the Legend” instead. smaug
I get the feeling in this forum a lot of people aren't into music with melodies. For me I love music with melody after melody along with a strong bass line. Vibe Tribe delivers the goods here. Not only does it deliver but its beautiful music. Vibe Tribe keeps the songs constantly changing which is another plus. I can't stand repetitive crap. To me this is good music morning or night. Worth every penny. Tatsu
I got this album on Sathurday so maybe it might be to early for a real review. But I've listened to it several times and so far I can say the following: I really like that sound. As some of you allready have said it's very melodic. You call it cheesy but I call it emotional! It really gets to my heart and I can imagine dancing to this sound at a party. Of course it is even better at an outdoor party with the sun going up but I also like to listen to this at home. Even with the melodies it feels still very psychedelic for me. I'll give it some more playing time and make another comment here later. But so far I really like it! I've forgott to add my favourite track: 8 - Frog'n' Roll and 10 - Adish. Adish is amazing, even if I'm not really into downtempo/ambient stuff. Strickenhaze
i love it other amazing old tracks by them: american pussy, drug enthusiasm, special places, play the game, ecstasy of revelations, liberation!!!!! they make BIG CRAP since the split. Ecstasy of revelations is a really good song in my book, so was Kick The Bass. Crazy stuff to listen with Bass Speakers bigger then 2 of you. As for Melodrama. I feel it to be not as good as their other album- Wise Cracks. Their song with X-noiZe was just awesome. But! The song Funky will never, ever leave my list of the most amazing songs ever made. Trance2MoveU
I havent felt this stupid listening to music since that fucking Nelly Furtado song about horses made me cry. Great melodies though. Holy sh*t this made me pee a little. I think that we can sum this release up with one delightful gif. An sweet, imaginary creature eating spun sugar. Delicious, but you really have to be in the mood for it. And you will have to visit your doctor to check you for diabetes. Mdk
ptn
The album unfortunately turned out to be yet another Infected Mushroom clone. I love melodies, but this is just too boring and simple. If you like Infected Mushrooms recent albums I’m sure you’ll love this one though. Well, talk about answer delay , but I may be the proof that You are wrong. I like IM's recent (as for 2004) albums and I have a feeling this one will bore me very soon. Few sounds here and there may remind of Infected Mushroom but it's only a transparent shadow. In my book this one is closer to epic trance than psy, but it has its moments (not many, but still). I've heard worse, nice hands-in-the-air-trance. As Lemmiwinks wrote, it's a matter of context and this CD fits the scheme like no other. The tittle perfectly tells the story, so this might be a treat for sweet melodramatic vibe fans.
