Negrosex
Depends on what speakers you have already. If your speakers are crappy and you feel that you have trouble mixing i think you should go for the monitors. But if you know your speakers well and they aren't total crap i think you should get the synth, it's more fun. But you don't need the synth to make professional productions. Software is good enough these days so a set of great montors would probably be a good choise if sounquality is your main goal. Still i think i would chose the synth if it was my choise, i love to play arround with hardware and i get alot of inspiration just by playing arround with my synths making different sounds and stuff. I don't get that from software. But there's probably people out there that feel exactly the oposite though so i guess it's just a matter of opinion. So in conclusion: Get what you want most and don't forget to try to find a good price too.

Frantic
i would definatly get the monitors. Mostly cause sound quality is to me, simply the main and most important thing of all. second, personally i don't know much about synths anyway, so i would first buy monitors and start with working with software in order to get to know things and to be able to experiment with sound. i think that if you get good feeling with software, and sound in general you can afterwards get synth and experiment with that. also, if you experience with real crappy soundsystem, you always have to imagine how it would sound on good monitors, and that is not much fun is it? Spindrift
No doubt get monitors! Dynaudio, genelec or tannoy reveal is my recommendations. The difference between VA's and software synths is not that great, but a pair of decent montors will enable you to get a lot better results out of your whatever synths no doubt. And for synths, get a pulsar instead of a VA. Super sound with many channels of direct 32bit audio into your host application and a very good mixer included. Think about it as a Virus TI without a steel box, but a lot cheaper and more flexible.
Negrosex
Yep, if your mixing with your headphones you need the monitors.

realisation
I would buy some cheaper but good sounding monitors, i recently got wharfedale 8.1+'s for £80 then you could buy a second hand waldorf 4-pole filter (about £60) for that waldorf sound and a yamaha ex5r (pick them up for £200-250) which has 4 types of synthesis, or a virus b for about £300 which is good enough on its own. uk prices, everywhere else should be cheaper :-)
