Guest Astro Cortex
The Orb - A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain that Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld (1990 Inter-Modo) 1. 19:17 A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain that Rules from the Centre of the Ultraworld (Loving You) Yep, this review is about only one single track, and I just want to tell you all how much I adore this track. It is one of the very first releases by The Orb, and it was written by Alex Paterson and Jimi Cauty, who were the original founders of the group. The latter also used to be one half of the KLF and left The Orb soon after they had finished this track. A Huge Ever Growing.... is a truly ethereal and epic ambient masterpiece that combines an overall futuristic, "space excursion"-like atmosphere with impressions of our life on earth: There are samples of familiar sounds such as distant voices, chickens, airplanes, church bells and ocean waves, which ironically add even more to the otherworldly (or should I better say "ultraworldly" trippiness of the track. It must be the feeling of being on earth and floating through space at the same time (which is what we're actually doing, isn't it?) that makes up the ultraworld experience. And they also sampled a piece of a 70s pop song, Loving you by Minnie Ripperton, which IMO is an essential part of the track, even if it's not very long. It just adds a nice emotional touch to it, which I really like, and it also has that mindbending otherworldly effect I talked about. I could listen to this track on any occasion, it's like a soundtrack of life for me. It just feels so damn good, and it is also pretty long, a thing I really love about ambient tracks. A true classic, which shouldn't be missed out on in any case!
Towelie
I just dont get this track.. and how it was the track that got orb "famous" in first place (or so i have understood) .. i think its pure carbage random samples put together and half baked synth on the background, especially the guitar sample from shine on you crazy diamond is so bad and random, totally out of place.. such a shame for the original song. I have never been able to listen the whole track.
Guest Astro Cortex
Then again, an Orb track wouldn't be an Orb track without some seemingly random sampling, wouldn't it? It may be a bit over the top in some tracks if you're not in the mood for it, but in this case all of it works IMO. And it's not so much about getting it.......either the track gets you, or, as in your case, it doesn't. I, for one, am deeply entranced everytime by that half baked synth :posford:
Towelie
Well that was my opinion.. and why i wonder its the track that got orbs career going.. ofcourse theres random samples in orb tracks but in this case it doesnt work at all..
