Guest serotonot - hypoteekkiyhd Posted May 8, 2002 Share Posted May 8, 2002 i think both are important. 50/50 because if dj makes mistakes all the time, the is no feeling of "trance" because the set "starts from the begining" after every big mistake IMO though, if the music isn't what you like, it also ruins the feeling. in dj:ing the most important thing IMO is to play as well as your skills allow. Terrible DJ technique, lots of mistakes, and the best damn music selection I've heard in a long long time. I loved every minute of his set. I've heard much superior DJs with perfect mixing, and they played crap, so it sounded like well mixed crap. If I want well-mixed crap, I may as well listen to a medley of Backstreet Boys tunes. Guest KS Posted May 8, 2002 Share Posted May 8, 2002 but the cake is way more important... honestly i feel that selection is 90% of the job, because it can't be quanitified.. and as a result a dj has much more leeway in this area. In the case of mixing, practice will make anyone with basic computing skills a good enough mixer..... but selection is key.. whenever i hear great sets, the common factor is selection.... for eg. dimitri is a great dj, his selection is amazing and so is his mixing, goa gil is almost as good as dimitri, but his mixing skills are very basic.... so in my opinion its mainly about selection.. mixing is important, and is more an area where a dj can mess up.... but as an enhancer, mixing is not that key, make no mistakes and you'll be fine.... There should be those long ambient passages between songs. So, I guess the best DJ is one who picks excellent tunes, beatmatches them perfectly for three or four songs at a time, but doesn't use beatmatching throughout the entire set. As a Psy Dj I often hear man you play wicked tracks but why don't you mix more? ( Sidenote The scene where I live is dominated by DJ's whom mix the hell out of the music, The main genre is breaks/hardhouse......ick....) If i could I would have minimal mixing skill and astronomical track selection ability. As was mentioned before everyone remembers the music played not really how well it was spliced together.
