Hi there,

does anyone have the "In case of escape"-CD (Phonokol), mixed by Atmos?

The sound samples at http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/pho/pho1cd218.html are definitely my cup of tea. Progressive Trance. But what about the mixing? I know Atmos' tracks, but I don't know his DJ-skills. Any comments?

Thx a lot!

In Case of Escape

Phonokol (Israel)

Whoops. Must admit, was rather excited to hear of an Atmos mix from Phonokol. Even though it followed Yahel's tragic Mixing In Action release last year (those shades! those trainers!) there was hope for a nice smooth set of scando-prog-psy from the master of that particular art, as we wait around in between "proper" artist albums like commuters waiting in between trains. However just seeing the tracklisting makes you weep. Now regular readers will know that we're not afraid to call a spade a spade; and not afraid to call a disappointment a disappointment; and not afraid to call a sellout a sellout. However, j'accuse Atmos: disappointing sellout. The tunes may be not all bad as tunes go, and even though the mixing is a little off at times it's got progression. But it could be so much better. Atmos is a great producer who, to a more or less extent, created his own style, and he certainly knows what makes a tune work. On top of that, he's a good DJ and can certainly tease and rock a crowd. So this could - perhaps should - have been an essential purchase. However nothing hides the fact that he's spinning a lacklustre collection of predictable and utterly non-psychedelic set of tunes borrowed from Digweed and as such we have a moral duty to advise you to steer clear. Steer clear, in fact, as though it was a blood-stained gentleman with an axe hitch-hiking at the side of the road.

I'm listening to the CD right now, as I have several times over the last few days, and I must say, that if you take this for what it is - a mix of groovy, deep-trance tracks - it's kinda good... However, this is Atmos mixing and Phonokol releasing, so you don't expect this style, you expect the Atmos/Phonokol-style... And this CD fails to deliver that!

As Dam1on says, this could might aswell be a Global Underground mix-CD by Digweed or something similar... To conclude, the music is ok, it's just not what you expect! ;o) 3/10

as said this is hardly psychedelic,

but not bad at all at what it's trying to do,

and that is a clubby mostly down-tempoed groove session,

which is more related to global underground than to phonokol and psy-trance.

this isn't even ATMOS's music style, but i guess that's what the man is spinning.

nice for a coctail party or in the background though....

agree with the above, but the mixing for this kind of music needs to be much better. you are much better off buying antony pappa's resolution cds with impeccable mixing.
