well

first i tell you I don't want to start a new minimal - maximal war...

But why is almost nobody making good melodic trance enymore!?

We have to live on AP, Electric Universe, Zorba, Yahel, Fractal Glider, battle Buddhas, talamasca & Simon posford!

( haha, and don't forget our Psynews-discovery Agalactica)

Anyway, all those artists mentioned above sell alot of cd's!! For example Electric Universe is one of the best selling artists of Spirit Zone! Fractal Glider was the best selling Boom! cd!!

That's because of one thing... because there are still many, MANY people that love melodic trance!

So, why isn't there some smart label that starts to release réal goa-trance!? I'm sure you will have alot of succes with, much more then with some unknown minimal artist!

Why!!!???

Bom Shankar!

Anoebis: Because it's hard to be innovative not repeating the same things...

I think Logic Bomb is very melodic and "goatrance", esp. their latest album!

Maybe it's coz it's (unfortunately) is trendy to do minimal theese days? Artists/labels still believe after X numbers of years with almost only non-melodic trance releases that this still is more appreciated then melodic when it's infact is a greater demand of melodic trance again, just as it was earlier before the minimal-era.

hmm, good explanations i think... but still...

Pswede... if you listen to Electric Universe's Transmission, it may sound like it was made 5 years ago, but iut kicks ass!!!! Time for some retro-artists imo!!

Btw; another question, why is minimal still called "progressive trance"!? there's nothing progressive about it, it's time we call melodic progressieve, haha!

i think it's because artists make the music _they_ want to make, after all it's _their_ artistic expression, they are not obligated to make the music _you_ might want to hear .. i strongly believe that in most "serious" music scenes (basically all styles except for a lot of pop music which is done solely for the cash) the true artists really just do whatever they feel like doing musically, and only a small number of producers is greatly influenced by mindless hypes ... (questionable of course in the case of etnica or x-dream, but hey, i'm pretty sure they really _like_ their boring minimal bollox, so who am i to judge it? ;)

however, the labels are probably much more influenced by these hypes, and i also think that there is still a lot of good melodic goa being made these days, but that there are not so much labels who want to release it because they want to focus on more groundbreaking, innovative _or_ just boring but trendy music ..

Check out Avatar Records. They still release melodic trance such as ToiDoi, Electric Universe and Asia 2001 and . They will soon re-release The Infinity Project "The Mystery Of The Yeti" and they just re-released X-Dream "We create our own happiness". A lot of new melodic releases will soon be released incl. my new album and my old albums.

héhé, But I already have them all Elysium! ;-))

anyway, let's say 2/3 years ago I could buy a new melodic trance-cd's every week, no it's more like 1 every month, and that's not enough for doing a good, up to date melodic dj-set!! (bu no ptoblem, oldies enough)

Bom!

I think there's still plenty of melodic around. Less than minimal and less than there was melodic before, but still quite a lot. But not all of it is good. I have to admit that to me the best year so far has been 1997 and I wish that we would in a way go a bit back in time, still progressing to new areas. Most of all, I'd like artists to experiment more. There's a bit of inlfation around I think. The same ideas get recycled again and again and something that used to be brilliant is now just average and boring, because it's worn out. This goes for pretty much all aspects of the music: sounds, melodies, rhtythms, etc. It's rare to get something very fresh.

Or maybe I shouldn't listen to so much psy?

I think I can't resist it anyway...

unfortunately i have no answer for that question Anoebis..

but from my point of view i was bored in the melodic full-on because the things were all done before , and I got very fast bored with 3DV / TIP.world / GMS hitz formula vey quickly ...

in my case , i din't like the chaotic and fast music anymore ( when i stopped taking drugs ) I needed something a bit slower , not aggressive ... more tribal .. i think the minimal psytrance scene is a very nice scene and not at all trendy , i agree i don't lke every minimal release but there great artist producing this style .. also when the music isn't chaotic there's room for more soundquality ... i mean , everytime I insert a Digital Structures / Baluns cd in my player the sounds are so crystal clear , so pure ... compared with other cd's i have bough ... i know , i wan't everything perfect ( music / soundquality / graphics ) and the melodic full-on scene misses the essence imo ... btw , a lot of so called full-on tracks have less layers compared with some progressive tracks ... minimal is all about subtle positioning and trance state providing grooves to dance on .. not about the ecstacy , not at all ...

and the house influences in psytrance are giving us new and fresh funky grooves and basslines .. smooth :-)

like i mentioned before , the years of chaotic trance are over , no doubt ... well maybe not for everybody but maybe i'm just getting old .. he he , nah ;-)

but , i realy hope the melodic scene will grow and i'm sure it will .. and it is ... lots of minimal / progressive music is bringing back the melody ... like Vibration 4 compilation , the ultimate Tegma album we're all waiting for (just listen to Sentenza) ...

the problem is people are affraid of change ...

It's not about people being afraid of change...

Not for me anyway! I've never used drugs, the problem is I can't get off by the trance sound of today.

Feasting to Pleiadians - IFO, WHO NEEDS DRUGS? It already has all the elements in the music of getting high and getting kicks!

Anoebis,

Don't be down mate...

I'll try to fill all your needs in this/next year -

and I'm sure there are many more projects being done by others.

Melodic trance is not allways full on or goa - btw.

and so,

please try to listen to the new Dag Wallin's album - Human Blue - Electric Roundabout

Cheers,

Yeah anoebis, i too have wondered why, when about 60-70 % of the people on this site prefer "old school" to minmal, that old school isnt being made anymore, I think that its due to what kristian said, its just "trendy" to make minimal at the moment...

Infact... Im quite worried that melodic is going to die out completely, Just today i was searching around second-hand record shops to try pick up some old tracks that i missed first time round, before it goes completely... and im in an old school mood now listening to transient 4.

Lauri, your totally correct 1997 was the golden year....I also think though... that like EP said there are alot of record labels noticing this hole in the market... Avatar and Inpsyde !!! are especially re-releasing old tunes..

But maybe for the melodic lovers, we should look towards the small and unknown labels to find the melodic tunes, as they dont give a @!#$ what is trendy, they just produce the music they were brought up with... Agalactia is a cool example !!!.

Hmm quite a long post for me.... anyways Im looking forward to new toi doi !!

Small labels, yeah, check out a group called Shockwave Syndicate. They

released two EP's on their own label, techno influenced but very pleasing to the

ear. Give the last MK Ultra a listen too!

Come on guys! Try to look at it in a more positive way! I think you are looking at it a bit negatively if you don't see that there is a huge variety of music in this scene.

And there is still alot of melodic psytrance being made. Ex. Fractal Glider, Mr. Peculiar, Talamasca, Infected Mushroom, Psyside, Logic Bomb, Loopus in Fabula, Alien Project, Electric Universe, and GMS... to name a few. If you think everything should be very melodic then of course to your perspective it will seem that there is hardly any being made. But if you look at it as it is then you will see that there is a huge variety of different psytrance approaches. We have hard, dark, pounding stuff like Wizzy Noise, Spirallianz, and X-Dream; softer, tribal, floating progressive stuff like Necton, Son Kite, Atmos and Ticon; funky, strange, groovy stuff like Loopus in Fabula, Kox Box/Saiko-Pod, and Texas Fagott; uplifting, melodic, morning stuff like Chi-A.D., Electric Universe, and Human Blue; psychedelic, twisted, melodic stuff like Hallucinogen/Younger Brother, Hux Flux, and Kox Box; cosmic, uplifting, not tribal stuff like Astral Projection and Yahel; dark, melodic, storming stuff like Dark Soho and some Infected Mushroom; complex, melodic, powerful, dancefloor stuff like Infected Mushroom, Oforia, Space Cat. Anyway you get the idea...there is a whole world of music out there in the psytrance scene alone. So lets all try to keep a bit more positive vibe going. No matter what approach really gets you going there is still plenty of it being made. So don't worry, be happy :)

Peaceful warrior: That's what atleast I feel a bit strange. When people say Fractal Glider, Mr. Peculiar, Talamasca, Infected Mushroom, Psyside, Logic Bomb, Loopus in Fabula, Alien Project, Electric Universe, and GMS being melodic...

Ok for Infected Mushroom, Electric Universe and perhaps Fractal Glider. But Electric Universe is way to simply/soft melodic in my taste and Fractal Glider is great but is to much mixed with too many genres in the tracks, no peeks to get off by.

What I like as melodic is stuff from MFG, Pleiadians, Slide, UX and so on. When Pleiadians is melodic/complex and nasty twisted at the same time, and there is a higher BPM, YEAH!

I don't need the clubby, too-easy-to-predict-trance of today. Nor do I need the psytech/minimal, if so, I should have been listening to techno in the first place.

I need that wickeded/twisted/frenetic/melodic stuff from MFG/Pleiadians/Slide/UX/Hallucinogen/Pigs in space/Tandu that's what's make me move!

Sometimes you can almost feel elder people (who has been in the scene for many years and want slower not too intense music) or younger people (not being in the scene for that long and therefor don't know of the old wickeded stuff) just standing there trying to look cool on the dancefloor. When for me, 28 years old, still prefering the insane/furious old sound to dance and release all inner tensions, to get high by the music without any drugs!

That's for me, what trance is all about.

That is Exactly what it is all about...(except im 22, but Ive been listening to psy since 15)

Im not saying that there is no melodic anymore and that melodic is best, and im not saying that minimal is crap, i like all the genre's and peaceful warrior your right there is an amazing amount of variation.. and im thankful for that... It is one of the reasons i love psy... But, listen to a compilation like transient 4 or resonance moods on matsuri or air-born on flying rhino... its that style that personally i miss.

BUt in retrospect... Music moves on you have to accept it... I think its just interesting that there are many people out there that still want these tracks produced.

RumZ (still looking for old original psy..hmmm i might start collecting it)

What I like about the Psy scene is:

1. the huge variety of styles (peaceful warrior, that's a great bunch you

mentioned there, but of course far from complete ;P

2. there's always enough of the older stuff to search for, so e.g. if you cannot find

enough melodic stuff among the recent releases there's really no reason to

complain

So there's always something to listen to that suits my mood, whether I want it trippy, groovy, powerful or chilled (often several of them at the same time), that's why I listen to Psy, it covers all the aspects of my personal definition of great music.

And yes, my favourite year was '97 as well, when it all became so tripped out...;D

I am not concerned about how melodic an album is. I am concerned with how creative the album is. If it happens to be creative, and has melody, then cool. If it is creative, but not melodic..cool as well. I am only worried about how creative it is. I want to hear innovation and intelligence. I want artists pushing the limits of the music, and taking it to new levels.
