Opinions/advice on PA Psytrance project

Hello!

I'm a Goa Trance DJ from Nashville, Tennessee. Musically, I'm moving away from the standard 2 turntable setup and moving more towards incorporating PA gear into my sets, and eventually I'd like to do 100% live PA and also produce. Currently I have the Korg EA-1 synth running into my 3rd DJ channel and I love it.

My plans/project is this . . . a friend of mine and I are teaming up to form a duo that will make an experimental hybrid sound coming from Ambient, Psy Trance, Jungle and Breaks. We already have the turntables as well as two Pioneer CD-J's (for the Ambient stuff) and want to incorporate a PA setup into it as well.

I have about $1000 to blow on PA/Production gear. I'm seriously looking at the devices from the Electribe series by Korg (The ER-1, EA-1, ES-1 and Kaosspad). The reasons I am considering these are:

1.) They are very user-friendly and I already have decent experience with them through my ownership of the EA-1.

2.) I want a PA setup that can stand alone as well as it can be incorporated into the setup I mentioned above. I want something that I can record on in my basement yet is portable enough to take out and do live performances.

3.) I'm planning on heavy use of sampling in my sets. I want to make my own samples as much as possible, and was wondering if the ES-1 was able to handle it all. Also if anyone knows any accessories I'd need to get said samples (microphones, etc.) or great sources of samples, please let me know.

I welcome any opinions, advice, recommendations, or constructive criticism on my new project. Thank you all for your help.

Hey there...

I would suggest for sampling you get a Roland SP 808 (Groovebox). You can load samples on banks and trigger them by pressing numerous buttons... apart from that it has effects and it is a recorder. It also has an ultra cool "D-Beam" Technology which allows you to control effects of the sample with your hand...This is great for a sampler.. It has "Zip" Drives which you can store your samples...

Apart from that I do own a Er1 and Ea1... both are quite nice for Live P.A. sets... its just step programming to me is a bit frustrating... unless your using the presets... which arent that great...I know "Ooze" , "Son Kite's" side project uses Er1 in thier ambient stuff... the most coolest part of that machine is the time/delay...

Good source for samples would be Sample CD's... you can dins some online...

Hope this helps you and best of luck!

I was looking at the SP-505 earlier. Like I said I have $1000 to blow and I'd like to get a decent sampler, drum box, and possibly a small PA mixer or the KAOSSPAD to go with it if I can get a deal somewhere. Hence my interest in the ER-1 and ES-1. (I already have the EA-1.) Plus I like the portability and user-friendliness of the Electribe series, and you can MIDI-link them. From your experiences with the ER-1 and EA-1, do you think the ES-1 would be worth the buy? Is it comparable to the Roland samplers? Also, would you be able to MIDI-link the ER-1, EA-1 and ES-1 together or can you only do two at a time?

As for sample sources, I was considering looting the CD store for a bunch of those CDs with animal and nature noises, etc. The kind you use when you're trying to sleep and stuff, you know? What would I need to link a sampler up to, say, a PC, a CD or DVD player, a mic, etc. to be able to get quality samples?

Linking many instruments is called i think "daisy chain"

i havnt used the es1 so i cant tell u but the er1 is fab//

its better to get sample cds odne by proffesionals.. but if u need good recorded samples, u need a good mic and maybe a compressor to record with compression rather than add compression later on
