Bad Cubase copy or RAM problem?

Recommended Posts

Here is a question I asked before in many forums but still haven't a clear answer.

The problem is:

I have a copy of Cubase SX and a P4 2.8G and 256 RAM.

I start a new project and everything works fine till I add a new VST instrument. Then half of the times the Cubase ''freezes'' and crashed down. To solve the problem I have to save the project, exit cubase and reboot my PC. Then I load my project again and everything works fine including the new VST I just added. This happens as I said in half of the times I'm adding a plug-in.

Things are worst when I add an audio file. I import an audio file (small or large, doesn't matter) and the cusabe's crashed down again. I do the same thing save-exit-reboot-load but sometimes then the project works with serious problems like random play of the various tracks etc.

So I wonder. I have these problems because of the low RAM I use or the copy I gahve is a bad one? I don't think it's a CPU problem, right? I mean, I have 2.8 Ghz processor. I need more?

Plz help me. :( Some gus told me it's a RAM problem, while others that the copy ain't good. Any ideas?

It sounds like the copy. The audio file problem is too much weird, and i dont think that this kind of problem is caused by low RAM

Besides, you already have a good PC for a start, 256 RAM is low, but not enought to cause those crashs. Especially if you have a 2.8 ghz processor

Sometimes, those problems could be solved by unsistalling and istalling again, but its not very likeble, and its also too risky.

It worked for me with Logic thou, wich i had similiar problems, expect for the audio files thing. wich is for me the biggest sign that something is indeed very wrong

I will research more about this kind of problem, and i will post here what i found out

I would actually say it's a ram problem. I mean 256 MB Ram is just enough to run Windows XP. Cubase is not a light program when it come to handeling vst's and audio files and the crash when you have installed a new vst or load an audio file indicate to me that there's simply not enough ram. Of course it could be a dodgy program too but you got way too little ram to work with Cubase properly. I will put my money on that it's a ram problem. Get at least 768 MB Ram or even better 1 gb. You'll see what a difference it makes and no matter if it is a problem with the program or not you still need the extra ram to work properly in Cubase :)

Well, i said that based more on the audio files problem. Because that is weird

256 RAM is indeed too lown, but i am now working on Logic with various VST, includin the heavy ones like Absynth with only 256 RAM, and havent crashed one single time. and i dont even have a ASIO suport right now. The only thing that makes my PC going is the hight processor

and at the same PC i have a Sonar 4, wich also works very fine and a FL6 wich also works fine, all that on a 256 RAM

maybe my PC is weird

I would also recomend to Ormion to give it a try on upgrading his RAM, but it does sound like a bad copy, especially when it comes to steinberg....wich is famous for their own litlle bugs

especially if they are not bought and instead cracked which in many cases also create small annoying bugs that makes it crash ;)

Not to be the one that says that its good to have cracked software, and I actually own a copy of the latest Cubase (but thats besides the point). I had MASSIVE problems with the fucking original from Steinberg, so I got myself the "illegal" copy as well.

This version actually works BETTER than the original, since its using an optimized "softwareized" driver for the dongle.

Anyways, I really hope that everyone here that is talking HAS a legal copy of the program :)

The problem is with the Algoritm of the Dongle, and the Cracked one is better... I wonder if the Steinberg shouldnt have hired those guys from H2O as programmers instead... The guys that made the damn dongle dont seem to think about that you need cream, and not something that is taking up eternal resources... they thought about security ;)

Well, i never had Cubase, not the original or cracked

I never really used Cubase.I just said the bugs thing, because steinberg is indeed a litlle bit of jumpy and their releases is somewhat full of minors bugs, cracked or not

Its a long story actually, but this PC i said i am using ( the one with 256 RAM), its not mine i am very far away from home, so i am using a copied version of Sonar 4 and FL6 just to see how it goes, while i am here. More of a curiosty, cause i barely use then

I do have an original Logic 5.5 and a FL 4 on my PC back home :)

and i never had to look back

Thanks for the info guys. Of course I'm gonna get more RAM for my PC, but if my copy is bad than...shit! I wish I hope enough money to buy the original Cubase SX3 and 1G RAM but I don't :) .

As for the audio files, this is exactly why I think that the copy is bad. I mean it crashes down with a single audio file wtf?
