Guest stringtheory
I just got these two albums recently, and wow....trully remarkable. Some of the best music I have ever heard, psy or otherwise. Sphongle in particular is genius. Simon Posford is a wizard. His ability for sonic manipulation, as well as the placement of the sound in reference to location, is fascinating. Raja Ram is a guru! His parts are perfectly timed and placed, and that flute of his is magic. As for classical mushroom, just sooo good. Some of the sounds on this album are some of the most interesting sounds I have ever heard. Both albums are incredibly intelligent.

Guest --==MileS==--
Bullshit... 'Are u Shpongled' sounds way more like the best album that the mighty OrB never delivered than the Ozrics which are more space rock a la Hawkwind than chillout... Guest Firestorm
yeah, besides, if you heard one Ozrics song, you heard em all.....
Guest phaeton
"if you heard one Ozrics song, you heard em all" ???!? this is something i've had people telling me before but never understood ... i can hardly think of another band with a repertoire as diverse as the ozric tentacles's .. i'd say the enormous amount of different styles they're mixing and instruments they're using (both acoustic and electronic ones) is unequalled, yet at the same time they manage to keep this totally unique and very recognizable ozric-sound ... while i can understand that the amount of stuff they've released can be a bit overwhelming for some, i don't find them to have lessened the quality, diversity and progression in their music .. really, if you compare ozric tracks from 10 years ago with stuff they're doing now it's still has this distinctive ozric-sound, but it's also radically different i.e. in the way they're using sequencers these days .. as for the original topic, i too find shpongle to be very obviously inspired by the ozrics and simon himself also said this in interviews .. there's nothing wrong with this though because he mixes these influences with tons of others, which makes shpongle sound unique in its own special way ... Guest transl
miles, listen to the ozric tentacles songs "meander", "aura borealis", "tight spin", and "dance of the loomi". some of the most chill stuff i've ever heard.
Guest wow
and yeah, occasionally i hear ozric influences in simon's work. but it certainly isn't "ripping off". everyone needs inspiration from somewhere.. listen to the album Gong - You and tell me you don't hear a disticintly ozric-y sound. ("you" came out in the 70's, before OT had formed.)

Guest transl
not sure, but i think it all goes back to some naked man with a large jaw clunking some bones together.
Guest --== MiLeS ==--
I only know they didn't borrow enough from the Beatles'LSD period (1967-1970)...Love that stuff... I do hear an occasional ozric tentacle in Shpongle but I still think that the early works of the OrB rate much higher in the influence list of 'are U shpongled' ... Even Mr.Patterson himself contributed to the album (why isn't he pushing psyambient a bit more)...
Guest stringtheory
Gotta love this board! A statement about two albums from Sphongle and Infected Mushroom turns into a debate over Sphongle and Ozzric Tentacles !
Strumpling
Stringtheory, I agree - those two albums are two of my prized posessions. You should definitely listen to Are You Shpongled several more times TRYING to ignore/master/predict? everything happening. I've had this album for well over a year now and still don't "know" most of it - its PACKED! Classical Mushroom IMO was Infected Mushroom's "peak." Never changing too much, and never staying the same for too long, this album tops their others simply due to the precise organization unseen in their later works. -=- Matt/Strumpling -=- time to move on to Tales of the Inexpressible - that one will take even LONGER to assimilate. Guest bugbread
Here's something I just noticed (Sorry, it's on Tales of the Inexpressible, even MORE off-subject): the drums in A New Way to Say Hooray switch from tribal drum rhyhtms to old-skool jungle rhythms at around 4:30. It's weird, if I ignore the melody, flute, etc. and just listen to the drum section, it sounds like a really mellow version of something that might have been on a compilation with Roni Size or Goldie. And how long have I had this CD before noticing it?? Hmm, I may have to accept Stringtheory into the fold of "people with the same tastes in Goa as myself". What do you think of Tales? Right now, the only person I know in real life or on this board who could say "Buy the new CD by unknown artist X", and nothing else, and I would buy the CD, is Strumpling. About time for another person, maybe.
Guest bugbread
Whoops: my mistake, the jungle rhythm is in Around the World in a Tea Daze, especially prominent around 5:30.
Guest stringtheory
I LOVE Tales of the Inexpressible!!! On of the most complex albums ever made !!! It is profoundly psychedelic!!!!! Raja Ram and Simon Posford are amazing ! The world is so lucky to have people like them, pushing the envelopes, helping to unveil new worlds, new thoughts and feelings! Art to the highest level!! Bugbread.....I am sure you know far more about Goa than I do, so I hope to learn from you and Strumpling about many other amazing artists and wonderful albums!! Guest ironmonkey
Tales of the Inexpressible has a few quality tracks on it but, I find the rest to be too new age/world in flavor. It is especially disappointing when compared to the former work Are You Shpongled? which to me is one of the finest, if not the finest, chill album in existence. An interesting parallel is that while I love The Gathering and Classical Mushroom (the former slightly more than the latter) I really do not care for BP Empire. Its so bad that I did not even purchase this one.
