Review:

Brain spanking neuro therapy!

When Dutch producer, DJ and Galactic Federation Media label A&R le.Nebuleuse released his debut album Voodoo: Nebz Traxxx 04 in the summer of 2004 it didn’t cause much riot… Not in these latitudes at least… It was an ok album I guess, it just kinda drowned in the midst of better releases… Now he’s back with his second album, and I’ve got a feeling his second coming is gonna cause a much bigger riot… Let’s find out…

Let me take you thru the tracks…

#01: Smoking Beat [148 BPM]

The opening track starts with a syncopated, erratic beat… Slow-burning and groovy as hell! The many Travolta-samples don’t annoy me at all... On the contrary, they seem to be a vital part of this track’s progressive atmosphere… It’s not a party track at all – it’s groovy, mysterious home listening track… And a damn good one too!

#02: The Factory [150 BPM]

“The reason for the death of the football hooligans, some people say, was either the rise of the ecstasy tablet and of ‘rave culture’, or perhaps that they, they thugs, simply got bored…” The eerie atmosphere is still somewhat intact, but the basslines is much more banging now… Dark, gritty, pounding night trance, not unlike Xenomorph or Penta… Dark, yet with a certain level of comic relief… Oh yes, this is ripe of the bone complex darkpsy… Brilliant!

#03: Technical Knock Out [146 BPM]

In keeping with the comic relief theme, this track starts with a cheesy poodle-rock sample apparently recorded straight from radio… Haha! It’s soon fades out and we’re introduced to some proper head-bang friendly bass mayhem… Though the previous track was faster BPM-wise, this seems much more chaotic… Maybe it’s the irregular beats, but somehow this complexity doesn’t go down as well with me, as the previous two tracks did… So yeah, as there are several nice passages here, I’m generally having a problem with the off-key kick here…

#04: Me Inde Psylight District [148 BPM]

“I made it – you eat it! […] Come quietly or there will be trouble… Ahrr, fuck you!” I have no idea what the first two words of the title means – but the last two are obviously a clever play on words regarding the Red Light District of Amsterdam… And judging by this track, the Psylight District seems like a pretty wicked place… This is evil, haunting night trance – with more than a couple of nightmarish passages and high-pitched acid-stabs… It’s not all spooky though – and the funny samples and oddball ideas helps in making this one hell of an experience… Just like the best Penta tracks, this is an excellent tune… Only gripe, is that it’s too short… ;o/

#05: Ask Ya Mama What I Have Done 2 The Track [150 BPM]

The intro, to what might possibly be the worst track name in recorded history, is a sound collage of cut-up voice samples treated with some kind of echo-filter… Soon after we’re exposed to a bassline much crisper than the previous tracks… The break and the oddball way out of it, is very original – if only the rest of the track was just as cool… Again, the mayhem level is extreme – and large parts of this track are just too damn hectic for my liking… It’s like we’re getting too much of a good thing, and eventually this track suffocates in its own success… What a shame!

#06: Spanked & Spanked [148 BPM]

Luckily track # 6 comes along and saves the day… Oh yeah, this is much better – and much more clearly defined horror trance… The dark, brutal beats are accompanied by murky, medieval melodies and a few, selected acid-lines… Nothing too complex – so this comes as a welcomed change after the previous bombardment… Solid tunage here – though nothing to get overly excited about… Spank you!

#07: Valentine’s Massacre [148 BPM]

“…These self-transforming machine elf creatures were speaking in some kind of coloured language” The tragic events hinted in the track title seem crystal clear when listening to this sonic mayhem of epic proportions… Unlike some of the previous ventures into complexity, I really, really enjoy this one… It’s a tribal excursion into multi-layered, fragmented psytrance… Very trip-friendly in all its weird glory… Like some kinda of bizarre hybrid between Procs and Derango… I love it! I wish it was much longer…

#08: Void The Molecular [148 BPM]

Up next is perhaps the creepiest tune of the album… Sure, it starts as an atmospheric, thrilling journey into paranoiac horror-trance… But if you thought that was scary, just wait a couple of minutes until the track really takes off… Fuck me, this has got to be some of the spookiest stuff I’ve heard in a while… Fast-paced, eclectic, über-dark PsyTekk with noize, industrial and horror-trance stuffed up its ass… This is eeeeevil stuff! Chainsaw trance which would work well as a soundtrack to the upcoming Saw III movie… Blimey! Whereas I appreciate the effort, this is simply too hardcore for my taste…

#09: S-J [146 BPM]

In many ways, this track is equally hardcore – it’s just done in a much less gut-wrenching manner… Nice! We’re still dealing in very murky darkpsy, but this track ventures well into electro/space-dub territory too - which is a welcomed change, despite its bleak and monotonous appearance… I like it, but it’s doesn’t stand out in any way…

#10: Best Of The Block [148 BPM]

I’m only guessing, but something tells me that le.Nebuleuse was listening to a lot of Spirallianz/Midi Miliz/The Delta before composing this track… This is pretty bleak, stripped-down tech-trance with a pinch of Asian flavour… Banging, driving, focussed music – that does not pretend to be anything else than what it is… In that sense I like it, though it’s maybe a tad on the less-eventful side of things…

#11: La Racaille la.Nebuleuse… Yeah [148 BPM]

Were you expecting an experimental downbeat tune to finish the album? Think again! Sure, this is experimental, but there is nothing downbeat about it… This is flaring, acid-ridden, propane-injected psytrance – packed to the rim with twirling, uplifting melodies and pounding basslines… That’s right – this is the Nebuleuse rabble! Although obviously too short, this is a fine way to close this album…

Well, I must say that I’m pleasantly surprised by this album which is easily much more mature than the first album was…. In many ways! Although the ground pillar is dark psytrance, this album has links to a variety of musical sub-genres… It’s experimental like Kemic-Al, funny like Penta, acid-driven like Phyx, dark like Xenormorph and trip-friendly like Derango… It’s the full package really, and where some of the tracks gets a little too complex for my tastes, they are easily outweighed by the brilliant stand-out tracks I’ve listed below…

The cover art is not gonna win any layout awards, but it’s quite ok – and stands out from the crowd nicely… So, all in all, this is indeed a nice album… Much more mature than I could have hoped for, and I’m sure it’ll appeal to a large crowd of nocturnal psytrancers… It sure deserves that! So, if you’re into perverted, cross-over mayhem, I’d strongly recommend this album… Enjoy!
