I woke up this morning somewhat stoned and wanted to see if it would be possible to rejuvenate yesterday's high by putting some goa-trance back on. A hair of the dog that bit me, as Jack Nicholson says to bartender Jeeves in Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining". My choice for the experiment became this newly acquired 1998 compilation out on High Society. So how is the experiment working out? Well, the deciding factor for me to order this cd was the inclusion of X-Dream's remix of E-Rection's Out Here We Are Stoned and this collaboration doesn't let me down. Melodic, aggressive, and psychedelic, all at once, and with the sample on top to laugh your ass off to. Classic X-Dream material. Besides this some other tracks that comes to mind are Bodh Gaya's Dream Machine and Paradise Connection's (Boris Blenn aka Electric Universe) Synthadelic Glide. Closing track Cloned by Drop & Dash ain't bad either. Besides these, however, this isn't going to be my favourite compilation. A little unimaginative, perhaps, this just sounds like stuff I've heard dozens of times elsewhere, and the tracks have a hard time grabbing me. So, overall, how did the experiment work out? Well, I'd still say it's possible to press the pause button, pick up the trance stik where it was left, and bring back yesterday's high. Even if not all the tracks here spin me right back into orbit, there are no far fetched fillers. And perhaps a track like Akasha Projekt's 10 minutes+ long Smiling Doors is nothing but a big challenge. You have to be cool to get it and, well, you know how that might be a little easier the night before ... ;o)! Anyway, even if all the tracks here don't work maybe I just need to play something else! Enjoy.
Guest djnemo
So, this brings back some memories, and I had to dig out this record from the cellar. I knew I had it somewhere, and there it was! Now, I havent listened to this since I got it. Drop and Dash are very close friends of mine, and I got all the stuff on High Society via them back in the days. I believe the label owner Peter Huber is a very nice bloke, had some contact with him before. Now, this compilation when it came out for me was the best in the series of the survival of the trippest series, but let me listen again and tell you what I think today. 1. Bodh Gaya - Dinner for the praying mantis This track was never a favourite of mine. It is too flat, and it doesnt have the trance that I am looking for. It just goes on and on and does not really change much. There is a very annoying 303 liner in there that totally needs to be less of. 2. E-Rection - Out here we are stoned. (X-Dream Remix) Now, this track I have played at so many parties, the original AND the remix. Bot original and remix are masterpieces. The X-Dream remix is more of a re-fresher of sounds, and they make it sound so much fatter and better. Considering the time the original was made, and with what hardware it was made, the original is the better mix (kudos for originality back in the days). 3. Translucid - Atomic Pussy haha here is a track that is as techno as it gets for the psyera it comes from. A lot of analog madness going on, but very subtle. These people were kind of ahead of time when they made it, just didnt realize what they were doing. I like the track, I would still throug it into a mix today. Its too bad that the main line in there isnt brough out a little bit more with a diffrent synth or sound. 4. Paradise Connection - Synthadelic Glide what can I say? Its fluffy, its acid trance its PARADISE CONNECTION!! Enough said, well done, very well done! 5. Bodh Gaya - Dream Machine Oh no! Another Bodh Gaya boredom track. I really didnt like this track at all. Its boring dark and badly mastered. 6. Translucid - Distortion Another totall analog madness track. Very well produced and mastered, and I would still put it in a techno mix today. This track isnt really psy either, its noisy and oke it would be psychedelic if you tripped to it of course, but its not your conventional psy from 1998. 7. Akasha Project - Smiling doors I cant even listen to this, i dont like it at all. Dont even speak about the bad production. It lacks so many things. The track itself has many nice ideas, but its just so bad put together, that I would say its a SHIT track. 8. Venus Vibes - Singerling I met this guy at a party, he was selling pancakes and smartdrugs. Very nice guy. If only his mastering skills and choice of sounds were as good as his pancakes, this track would actually be good. 9. Drop and Dash - Cloned Now, these 2 guys are very good friends of mine, but that doesnt mean you get extra points from me! I never really liked their tracks on CD. It always sounded boring. I like the production though, and their mastering is very good. I must add though, when they were playing LIVE, they certainly come very close to the feeling that I have when I see Juno Reactor live. Well, all in all, there are 3 decent tracks on this compilation. Too bad
SkeletonMan
Hehe. Nice review ! Seems we see eye to eye on SOTT . You should put it on discogs too. I've always wondered why not more people put their reviews on discogs too. Hmm, hope that's not too off topic ... So, this brings back some memories, and I had to dig out this record from the cellar. I havent looked too much at all what you can do at discogs, because im trying to write my own review system at the moment. Its getting more and more complex every day though, because I get more and more damn ideas on how to implement it with other stuff than just music. Crosslinked databases and stuff like that.... ARRRGGGHHHH does my head in You have more records from that time? I have a shitload that I should listen and review.... its good fun
SkeletonMan
Yeah, exactly. It's great fun to write these reviews. It's almost a drug to me now. Don't really feel I know an album in my heart if I haven't reviewed it yet. Well, that's not quite true, but, you know ... Well, my collection isn't enormous. Compared to your average person it's huge. Compared to the psy cravers here it's small But I'm adding as I see see things pop up I can afford. And then I try to review them when I've gotten them under my skin. Sometimes that goes fast (like with this one. Pretty soon I knew how I felt about it). Other times it takes time. Haven't figured out, for instance, how to critic Derango Tumult yet. But yeah, put it on discogs! I mean I read my review and then yours and they suit each other really well I think. Not that that matters (and it won't when the discogs mods are approving the reviews I think) but it's a good review you did anyway. Well, just a suggestion. Besides I love to see the Skelly initals all over discogs ... I dont think its off topic Yeah maybe I should do that. Trance2MoveU
Artist: Various Title: Survival of the Trippest 3 Label: High Society Date: July, 1998 1 Bodh Gaya - Dinner For The Praying Mantis (9:08)2 E-Rection - Out Here We Are Stoned (X-Dream Dang-A-Long Remix) (7:45)3 Trans-Lucid - Atomic Pussy (6:59)4 Paradise Connection - Synthadelic Glide (7:32)5 Bodh Gaya - Dream Machine (9:44)6 Trans-Lucid - Distortion (6:54)7 Akasha Project - Smiling Doors (10:34)8 Venus Vibes - Singerling (9:15)9 Drop & Dash - Cloned (7:41) High Society? You know that's a lower level skin mag right? It says a lot when you find yourself looking up at Penthouse and Hustler. Anyhoo... Staring at the cover made me realize how primitive the early tribes mucosal transfer techniques were. Do you really think there are any undiscovered peoples on Earth? A tribe that has had no contact with the outside world? And I'm not talking about that link that makes the rounds on Facebook every couple of months. What you don't know is that image they keep showing you is from Teaneck New Jersey. It's true, there's a Dunkin Donuts just to the right of that photo and a pawn shop across the street. Their tribal dress Tuesday promotion really took off. Could there really be a group of people that have never seen a plane go across the f*cking sky? I can't go 5 minutes without seeing vapor trails up there. A people that have never had a cookie or seen pornography? Those poor bastards. Then again that means they also aren't burdened with the likes of Miley Cyrus, Bieber, or any of your garden variety Kardashians. Say, they look hungry. Do ya think we could get those tribes to eat them? The third and final CD in the Trippest trilogy is disappointing on a few levels. Number one it's only a single disc. Two, the number of artists represented has been cut. And most importantly the quality of the music has taken a dip. Starts off really good, but midway thru the album, the "ah f*ck it" mentality set in and people were doing the walk of shame from the office with cardboard boxes and plants towards the elevator. Dinner For the Praying Mantis is the best track I've ever heard from Bodh Gaya and Out Here We Are Stoned is well...Out here We Are Stoned. Synthadelic Glide shows that Boris could craft a kick ass goa track when he wanted to. And that's when things began to go wrong. The next four tracks lumbered on forever like a guy who's carrying two suitcases to his hotel five miles away. In the Amazon. Man did things go to hell in a handbasket quickly. The final tack...hmmm how can I put this in terms you might understand? It has a sound reminiscent of a poor soul choking her way through a blowjob. There I said it. This is called going out with a whimper. Taking the money and running. They pull you in with the sweet and then it's sh*t sandwiches for the remainder. Thank God those cookie starved porn deprived tribes didn't have to hear this. Mdk
