Guest Reflekshun
Just using Postford as a fine example of the many psytrance acts that use multiple alias for separate projects.. now i never questioned this before, but one of my (non-psy hehe) friends got on the topic of aliases for producers, and i told him how this postford dude has gone through more than 10, and many other psy acts have more than one alias.. i know in some cases it's because of different group members, but sometimes it's simply because it's such a different project. My friend asked why change alias for separate projects why not let album names take care of that? I couldn't really find an answer except that it works good for marketing.. do you guys know of any reason artists in the psy-realm do this? _|reflekshun:::... Guest cyber
Well sometimes they change their aliases just for individual tracks on compilations or 12" so since they haven't released a whole new album, album names can't take care of that. I guess that can be the answer to your friend's question.
Guest mmm...
I didn´t know that Simon also uses the alias "Postford":P Isn´t it quite obvious that they may have musical reasons there? Different moods in the music, so they want to use different names, too. And perhaps in general, they don´t want to create such a big "image" around one Name, but want the music to do the talking... Guest Slidingtrancer
Circles are boring and cycles are fun?
Strumpling
"mmm..." is right on the dot. They don't want to mislead existing fans..... so as to not freak out people when releasing Shpongle, he changed the artist-name... -=- Matt/Strumpling -=- ya know? Guest Reflekshun
Strumpling you locked it down! hehe thanks dude, it's alot to do with respecting people buying an album based on alias which is totally totally normal and getting something they didn't really think they were paying for.. thanks! hehe now i can explain it _|reflekshun:::... Guest hoffy
From what i gather there are usually other members in the simon tracks where he doesn't use the name "hallucinogen"- except for Walter Ego, i'm not sure who that is. As for not building up an image around a name, i don't know about that, it's not like if simon posford releases something under a different name that we don't find out! Guest Piper Pat
The main reason for using an alias is simply the fact that there are 3 different kind of main-contracts between artist and lables... let's make an example: a person (let's call him mike) starts an act called " lapaloma ole". contract 1) he made a great track called "hello mowie wowie"... label hawaii rec. pays a fee to get the rights for that track to use it on it's next compilation -> no name thing contract 2) label hawaii rec. signs the act "lapaloma ole" for let's say 2 albums so the rights for everything mike releases under the alias "lapaloma ole" belongs to hawaii rec. !!! NOW WE GET TO THE MAIN-POINT OF YOUR QUESTION: but now the mike gets an (maybe better) offer ( or maybe he got problems with hawaii rec... i don't know...1000 of possile reasons) of Fiji-Lab-rec. . so what is mike goin' to do? just start a new act with a different name. right-problem solved... contract 3) there would be the opportunity for hawaii-rec to save the EXCLUSIVE (for example mchael jackson at Sony ?!?) rights for ALL of mike's work but he wouldn't sign except he would get so much money that he wouldn't have to worry about his future...( sorry but fuckin hard for me to explain in english but i guess you know what i mean). that's not just an idea people, that's a fact !!! most contracts signed are of course no.2. there might be some artists like simon who use different aliases because of style or any other personal mood-reasons but the main thing is the contract-right thing... Guest Reflekshun
Thanks Piper Pat for the interesting post, never thought about it like that.. however in simons case i think it was rarely to do with label deals as 1) he's always been with twisted with most (all?) of his aliases, and 2) he now owns twisted and can only gain by writing his killer tracks for his own label. _|reflekshun:::...
