GMS - Formula, Simon Posford, Random Thoughts

I get what alot of you have said about GMS having a sort of strict formula they use for their track structure. I just recently got GMS vs. Systembusters. There are some cool tracks on it, but there is not alot of variance in them.

Will Posford every do a new psytrance release as Hallucinogen ?? I hear about his dub remix album. But that doesnt sound interesting to me. I also hear there is another Sphongle album on the way. That is great, I love Sphongle. But I would really love to hear a new release from Posford as Hallucinogen. I mean Lone Deranger and Twisted are masterpieces. Think what Posford could come up with now, after 5 years.

Two recent releases that have been amazingly good are Logic Bomb:Unlimited and X-Dream:Irritant. Both albums are sooo well thought out. The structure of the tracks, and the approach to the tracks, are very different and interesting. These guys are innovators. They are certainly pushing the envelope in the genre of psytrance.

Has Mantis ever realeased an album ?? I remember finding a number of his tracks free for download on some website. I can't remember the name, but it had a number of artists and tracks that could be downloaded for free. I remember Mantis having this insane, whacked out, deeply dark psytrace. It was the darkest psytrance I have ever heard. I would love to check out an actual album from Mantis if there is one. And on the topic of dark psytrance, Who do you recommend. I have Dark Soho:Sunspot, which is an amazing album. But I am looking for something even darker, and more crazy. Any thoughts ??

Mantis is a mate of mine, Ra'anan, from Amsterdam; he never had anything released; now he makes music under the name of Principia Imagika and Paradigm Shift... they are sending stuff to labels at the moment. You can hear some of their older stuff at www.trance.org =o)

re: the first bit... I think Simon Posford is a lilttle bored of Hallucinogen, and is more interested in collaborations like Younger Brother (wasn't there supposed to be an album this summer?) or the Twisted Allstars and stuff like that.

Yep, stringtheory, as dam10n said, the odds of a new Hallucinogen album coming out are very very low, because Simon isn't really into psy like he used to be. If there IS a new Hallucinogen album, it probably won't be psy either (since Simon uses the name "Hallucinogen" for his solo stuff, even his solo ambient would probably be called "Hallucinogen") If another Hallucinogen album comes out, expect it to sound like "The Herb Garden" or "e", not "Gamma Goblins" or "LSD".

i'd say unusual suspects qualifies as a hallucinogen album.... and about gms, there are two tracks of theirs i like.. hyperactive and juice.... the rest is quite boring to me nowadays...... and i think you will like sesto sento and droidsect if you want something harder than dark soho./// and tim schuldt if you haven't already checked it out...

juice is shit.. they just make a cover of a very good song to a movie. the only thing i like in it are the stuff that is in the original song.. requiem for a dream - lux aeterna

well i don't really love it so i won't defend it too much, yeah its a formula, but the breaks come very dj friendly i.e, one is followed by a bass/ lows, one is followed by highs etc... and at a party that is quite cool, if i was at home i would rarely listen to it though,....

stringtheory: For darker stuff try Xenomorph - Cassandra's Nightmare album and some singles that are not on that album. It's scary twisted horror music and the voice samples used fit in very nicely. It's nothing like Dark Soho which I wouldnt even consider dark after listening to Xenomorph. Also I've heard that Semsis (Letting go album?) is similar to Xenomorph.

Thanks everyone for the great responses and recommendations :-) Why do you peeps think of Insect Sun:Slow Drive ?? I read that it had a dark and almost melancholy feel. Sounds like an interesting album. Has anyone actually heard it yet ??

yeah, GMS music is quite one-dimentional, except for their ambient stuff and their zorba stuff- i think that proves as artists they can be diverse.. can't blame them too much tho, they're not the most groundbreaking releases that come out of the GMS stable, but they sure as fuck tear up dancefloors- thats what they are good at, thats what they like doing.. more power to them. I wouldn't buy their album tho because as soon as they release anything, its all over the clubs and parties.

as for hallucinogen, i don't care too much, if he's not 100% into writing psy trance, i'm not going to hold my breath for his stuff- i thought unusual suspects was pretty poor, really, considering some of the quality music that the artists on the CD are capable of. If he sticks to writing ambient music, excellent... just a question tho, what is the track "e" that was mentioned before?

oh, and for dark trance: Xenomorph's "SOCIOPATH" is excellent.... i don't get into dark trance much, trent reznor does it much better- check out "the fragile" by NIN, its a well produced album & quite psychedelic...

The Fragile is a remarkable album. I have been a big NIN fan for a long time. Wonderful music. If you want to see just how wacked out NIN music can get, Check out Further Down The Spiral. Contains remixes of songs off Down The Spiral. I like some dark psytrance now and again though. I remember the stuff Mantis produced was just wonderful. Extremely dark, but intensly psychedelic.
