Guest Mijis
Shiva Chandra - Subsonic Artist: Shiva Chandra Title: Subsonic Label: Spirit Zone Date: 2003 Track listing: 01. Splud 02. I Never Have 03. Loops 04. The Rip Fx 05. Turn About 06. Family 07. Alien Reminder 08. Tinware 09. Modern Acoustics Review: My opinion : one of the best minimal progressive music such as beat bizarre and others , great studio work , new crazy psy sounds, reminds me a lot of what hux flux did a few years ago (effects and sounds , not music) , the only problem is that not all the tracks are that good , the good ones are Splud , Turn about , and family (in my opinion) i rate those 3 tracks with 10/10 but i rate the cd with a 7/
nervgaz
I'm agree with the review before me, this is a good minimal cd with strange sampling sounds, etc... But as he said, not all the tracks are excellent !! I love splud very much, but some of the other track are more "cliché". Not from any other artist, but these track are average from an artist like Shiva Chandra. Maybe it should sounds better whit a less 4/4 beats aproach and little less fast bpm... Anyway, this is a excellent album after all, but not the best of Shiva Chandra, I prefer GECKO... And yes, about the video Cd : This is cool, but you need a DVD player capable of reading VDC, or a Pc with a VCD player (you can download it from the net, but it's not free ...Anyway, good psychedelic video, and a bonus movie of shiva playing at an outdoor party... So final Verdict : 8/10 (not the best of Shiva, but excellent cd compare to many other artist)
freak51
By now one has to acknowledge Shiva Chandra as one of the most prolific psy-trance producers, and he has his own minimal-progressive pumping style with meticulously crafted, hospital-clean sounds. I'm not personally a fan, and I don't think this disc will make any new converts or lose any of his existing fan base. But that's OK, he's recording for his faithful audience, not me. 7.5/10 if you're dying for more Iboga-like sounds; 4/10 if you aren't. Setsuko
Nice , very nice ... Subsonic is a real masterpiece , ofcourse not accessible for every psytrance freak like Freak51 mentioned . This is organic minimal psy ... but still very unique and full of crazy ideas .. the way Daniel Vernunft creates tracks using samples by filtering them into wacko sounding loops is quite astonishing ... it's the kind of trance that provides the listener with abstract emotions , very deep and tribal . like you're dancing through a trippy futuristic jungle full of crazy sounding animals . My favourite tracks in here are 1(!),2,3,6 and 9 ... I love this music 8.5/
Lemmiwinks
yes it's minimal, but it's morning-oriented (not dark) so it's not that bad :-) Actually there are some tracks like Splud which I really like!! 7/
Guest Tchankov I.V.
As the faithful auditor of Daniel Vernunft's brew all I have to say about Subsonic - this album is really tough. Each track has its moments as expected but...tracks 2 to 8 form a kind of solid dense flow which is hard to really dig into. I mean there are perfect elements but they are served overly complicated. At the same time the structure of the compositions is not as subtle or rhythmically elaborated as I could expect. There is something unnecessary appeared which steals quite a bit of efforts put here by Creator. After all, maybe the name Subsonic stands for it but it does not explain me why or what for. Organic minimal which leans towards plain minimal. Having said that I really appreciated tracks 1 & 9 which do a good job of keeping the vibe alive. I consider this to be transitional work from Daniel: it well shows he still has some treats to offer in the near future but the mold in not yet properly programmed to put them right away in da mix. So I eager for hearing more "Modern Acoustics"-alike organic psy-jazz from this truly talented artist in the future. 7/10. Tchankov I.V.
