Shpongle : Crystal Skulls (Dance Mix) Review: Yooohoooo, here we go, a full-on psychedelic rush from Raja Ram. What a great compilation, nuff respect! This compilation is worth having for the superb Shpongle track alone which is just awesome - fantastic percussion workout here. But there isn't a bad track on the album (got the vinyl which doesn't have all the tracks on it). Zorba's "Barkbase" is so rhythmic in their usual style, accessible but very danceable; the Logic Bomb track is one of their best ever with a truly shivery breakdown and lots of subtle detail embedded in a mellow moodiness; Dynamic's "the djs took pills" has a classic sample in the goa tradition and is virtually dusty from all the stomping (Goa Gil would for sure have included this in his epic sets); Astrix's "Eye to Eye" is excellent - floaty layers of synths building up in intensity - not a beat-driven machine but a slowly evolving layeristic beauty; Alien Project really kicks ass in "Maya", one of his best tracks for a while, he really has an intensely rhythmic sense of timing; the GMS remixes of Younger brother and Hallucinogen do not improve on the originals but are groovy in themselves. This might well be the full-on soundtrack of the summer; Tipworld really outdo themselves yet again. A worthy addition to the noble line that includes Hallucinations, Assassinations, Incanations. Fully recommended. 9/10 ~*~
Guest Dr G
Ok, I see that it is compiled by Benji Vaughan of Prometheus, not Raja Ram. But still a nice compilation, full of energy and fun. Having listened to this some more, I think the Astrix track is a little cheesy for me and the GMS remixes are not great at all (have they lost the plot recently or what? Too many plastic and clangy sounds), but all of the other tracks on the vinyl are groovy indeed. A special mention for Dynamic - brilliant old school track, will go down well in any set. As for Shpongle, what can I say - THE BEST!! ~*~
