Guest Le Lotus Bleu
Melica - Running Out Of Time Artist: Melica Title: Running Out Of Time Label: Phonokol Date: 2003 Track listing: 01. 8'07" Experience 02. 7'38" Running Out Of Time 03. 8'19" Freeman 04. 8'00" Psychodeliya 05. 7'03" Dancing Up (Dance Mix) 06. 8'01" Smash 07. 7'45" Sea Master 08. 7'55" Ilusion Quest Review: Things start well with an original & funny representation of food?s biologic chain on the coverart. Melicia (Aviram Iluz) delivers his debut album Running Out Of Time, with a hybrid style composed of the Astrix?s trademarks builds up coppled with high strong energy melody like Xerox, the global musical content is very rockin?. I especially appreciate the frequent changing half-tone of the bassline in this track announced before by a cosmic break around 3?00, this tune benefits too of a nice growing up emphasis with a final climax leaded by a slighty sour sound starting after the 2nd break around 5?10, delicious. Running Out Of Time, is another hit from this album, like Experience this one is a kinda fast groovy-full on stuff, major difference comes from the melodic sound which is more incisive. Freeman (done with Dj Miko) is less atractive, the harmony gets fatter & the whole thing remains puffing. Even if the melody isn?t bad, it?s globally too flat & with not enough amplitudes. Psychodelya, if i don?t miss, is the first track with the participation of Odelya (the Melicia?s sister) for the vocals, nice sexy voice. Around 5?00 a nice jumping twisted up & down fx melody wakes up the track added with soft brassy sound. Melicia comes back to his more natural style (i presume), putting down on energy but he strangely seems to retain himself on this one. Smash is a perfect example of Melicia?s stuffs based on energy, unfoerunatly the rest don?t follow : the melody is quite lame. Genesis (great collaboration done with Beat Hackers) is more built with more density opening on a the Odelyia voice coppled with a bass vibration. Things are going faster some nervous electric riffs succeed to blow away the track to another dimension. The vibration of the begining comes back for the break accompanied with some Odeliya kinda incantations. Some slighty sour sound gives a slight asian atmosphere during a very quick moment. Sea Master starts with some autotune on Odelya?s voice, the electric riffs follow (not very nervous this time). Then you?ll notice several nice fx on sounds but the climax is a bit failed. Illusion Quest has a sweet cosmic intro sound despite this, the track contains one more time some electric riffs, good ones, Odelyia sings a bit before the break, the global result is very catchy. Favorites by order :7,1,2,9,4. Dedicated to the dancefloor, this album uses too much the same sounds & harmonies, some effective stuffs but not too much surprise indeed a bit easy sometimes. Running Out Of Me suffers, according to me, from a big lack of diversity furthermore it seems (i could be wrong) that the whole thing has been quite fastly produced. A bit more work & application for the next time Mr Melicia, and it'd be better, even if i recall it, the whole thing would surely work on the dancefloors. Mark :7/
Jon Cocco
MELICIA - RUNNING OUT OF TIME PHONOKOL RECORDS 2003 Track list: 01. Experience ... B- 02. Running Out Of Time ... B+ 03. Freeman ... B 04. Psychodeliya ... B- / B 05. Dancing Up (Dance Mix) ... B 06. Smash ... B+ 07. Genesis ... B / B+ 08. Sea Master ... B / B+ 09. Ilusion Quest ... B Running Out Of Time is one of the most solid and underrated Full On Psytrance albums ever released in my opinion. The production is strong. The sounds are crisp. The general track is dance friendly, driving, more or less dark, groovy, and very energetic. I like the melodies and various sounds in this album. I like the complex, aggresive sound variations that develop at times, especially as the album progresses. The music is occasionally littered with cool, echoed samples, chopped up voice bits for effects (Track 2) that are great, very catchy in how they altered and delivered. Also present is an emotive element that peeps its heads out of the clouds deeper into the ride (beginning with track 3). Things never get cheesy either, in my opinion. This is a Psytrance album [made/intended] for dancing to. In that sense, it's great. It capitalizes on one thing but does it extremely well. Driving to this also works. It has a continuously energetic, motivatiing feel, although it isn't positive sounding as much as it will get your heart pumping. I suppose Melica's style is innovative to a degree, although it is influenced by other Full On Psytrance artists of course. They have taken a bunch of existent elements out there and with them, they've crafted a relatively strong Full On album. How certain sounds, melodies and other various aspects are delivered make this album fun. In Conclusion, those who liked 1200 Micrograms - The Time Machine and/or Lemurians - Secret Message will most likely enjoy this album. It includes some of the more fun, dark, underrated, and storming Full On Psytrance tracks from the early 21st century. These include the self-titledRunning Out Of Time as well as Smash, for starters. The album is also coupled with one or two beautiful dance numbers, such as Genesis, thanks to wonderful, female voice work [without singing lyrics] that really compliments. There is humor and anger in this album as well as unexpectedly fun moments too, which I like. I buy albums to enjoy the music for the most part, not to study the technical intricacies of how they are made. There are no bad or even average tracks on this album for what this is, in my opinion. Furthermore, this is a rare example of why I endorse Full On, if even I average only 1 to 2 Full On albums per year. Best Tracks: 2, 6, 7, 8, 9. B The album is currently available to buy for $12.95 on Saikosounds. This is where I bought it. See below. Listen to samples first.
