Guest Gizmo
Prisoners Of The Sun - Are You Scientific Enough ? Artist: Prisoners Of The Sun Title: Are You Scientific Enough ? Label: Sunset Date: 2001 Track listing: 01. 09'44" Orange 02. 09'11" Polen Peltsche 03. 08'32" Frau Schaele 04. 10'24" Candy From The Strange Side 05. 07'55" ASCII Porn 06. 08'38" Maracas 07. 09'49" Blue Void 08. 09'49" WM Baelle Review: Debut album from Achim Luthje & Thomas Wilhelmy is very good, dark minimal trance, but not so minimal as iboga, or tatsu stuff, the closest style I could equal it is Necton. 1st track dark, with deep bassline lot of samples. 2nd track also dark & progressive, somewhere in the middle appears nice melody (sth like S-Range). "Frau Schaelke" attacks with very deep bass, lot of different drumming, everything is in low tones, very dark. Next one little slower, lot of samples & some groovy, simple, sad melodic theme at the end. "ASCII Porn" - nice rythmic section & fat bass theme during the whole track. 6th one is with different guitar samples somewhere in the background, but the main distorted guitar theme (in sound closest to Delta, or Atmos) starts in the middle of the track, for a moment, sounds OK. 7th track is fast, a little funky, with house synth samples. The last one is slow & heavy, dark melody as a theme. As I said it's good album, You can't say it's bvoring. When U listen to it U can hear the fusion of lot of progressive styles played by: Necton, Son Kite, Auricular, Atmos, or others. The tracks are long, but I can't say they're monotonic, everything is changing whole time. 7,5/
Guest Tomvcarter
Having read a good reveiw of this album i bought it and was dissapionted quite quickly, i am a lover of the progressive sound, but this comes nowhere close to the spiral trax stuff. It does have good base lines, but the rythems and cymbals over the top dont make me want to dance enough. I would disagree strongly with Gizmo above, and say that it sounds nothing like Necton. I love necton but found this boaring not because it is minimal as i like minimal, but it just does not flow. It does have potential and i think that POTs will be sure to bring us some amazing tunes in the future, but this is not quite there. "Candy from the Strang side" start very well but just becomes dull, and lacks a decent groove. disapointing 4/10.
freak51
There are some nice tracks here: #4 and #8 are nice. The minor melody is excellent in #4. The rest actually is not bad but nothing special. It's this pasty gruel sound that has basically turned me off of psy-trance. I mean, it's better than house music but doesn't give me any thrills. And the titty-bar cover art is gratuitous. Still, this is not awful as a debut effort. Say, 5/10.
Guest MK
I was suprised to see the reviews above, I've been listening to this album for the past few months and I think it's really quite good and has quite a cross-over appeal. If you're into groovy, psychedelic, minimalistic, percussive trance - then I think u will b impressed. I thought it was an excellent debut by these guys. Their trax on comps have been great, and this album continues on from there. Great rhythm patterns and a real funky , uplifting vibe. P.O.T.S. are getting me all excited, 8/

Guest Pe'a
MK, I have to agree with you, this is a very good album. Dieznyik, this music is PSYCHEDELIC, I'm not sure what you are talking about; You are doing a disservice telling people that this album is not for "goa fans"; also a few of the other things u say in your review are based on nothing but hypothesis and non-facts... POTS have producd a very involved, upbeat, tribal in parts, excellent release. I think it will please both goa and psy-trance fans alike - that's if u have an open mind and are looking for some new progressive rocking sounds. Guest russ
I think this album is excellent. I totally agree with Pe'a. I personally find this album to be very psychedelic. Listen to Candy from the Strange Side on a drop and tell me this doesn't do funny things to your head. The album as a whole is very hypnotic and carefully constructed, with groovy moments, the occasional uplifting melody delicately folded into the mix, and hints of sadness. For me this is one of the most interesting artist releases of the year, up there with the Magnetrix and Auricular releases. I highly recommend this album. 8/10 P.S. The album is darker than their recent vinyl releases with Chris Organic. P.S.S. This album sounds absolutely nothing like Necton. (It is far, far better than the Necton album.) To be honest, I can't think of anyone else who has the same sound, which is a good sign in my book. P.S.S.S. Kind of strange cover art--doesn't really match the feel of the music. Guest ivan.nowodworsky[at]aventis[dot]
I love this album, Tribal, percussive trance ("blue void"),hypnotik, not so dark (for me). My two favourite tracks are "Candy from the strange side" and "Blue void" I don't have "orange" tracks on the LP. I think is a very good first Album for POTS (their two first tracks in EP Sunset Records "EKO JULA"and "PORNO SABAKU" are very good too and more tribal than this album) and i wait for their next tracks..... Guest gizmo
Heh, little explanation. This album is similar to necton in style (dark, progressive, lot of bass), not in sound, so don't be nervous. Similarity in sound is rather low, but anyway for me it's much better then Necton. Mergi
Dark and progressive... opens with orange, steady beat with some really nice effects. Polen Peltsche still got that heavy beat, but this one is more ambient than the first one, really great when the melodic sequence enters halfway into the track. Frau Schaele, progressive with nice bassline, included is of course some wicked dark effects. Candy from the strange side is probably one of the better tracks on this album, the track has a very nicely created atmosphere, dark, nice groove, and a nice vibe kickin' in at 4:07. ASCII Porn, the darkness seem to clear a little here instead giving way for a more effectful track, this one is still quite calm like most of the tracks on this CD. Maracas is a little more trippy, and jumpy, has a funky groove. Blue void is filled with more ambient inspired effects. WM Baelle, we're back to a more effectful track, but this one is more jumpy, the sounds are a little more distorted. This is a good album and I really like Polen Peltsche with that really great melodic sequence, that track really kicks. But some of the other tracks are a little too repetitive, could have needed more variations. 7/
Guest noma
better than necton ..psychedelic with a mean flow!! at one point, i thought i heard a dog bark outside but it was the music. It is progressive, which i like, and deep but you wouldn't call it too hard .. i guess that's why it's on sunset not plastik
Guest vernon sullivan
a great album... I mostly agree with the first reviewer, the music is in a darkish bass-heavy progressive groove, but with a real smoothness to most of the tracks that I really love that reminds me also a bit of son kite or atmos or even some of ticon's smoother tracks, but still quite dark-sounding. For me there was no single track that really stands out, but this is very well constructed as an album and is best listened to as such - there's enough progression that you can easilly listen from beginning to end without once getting bored, which is more than can be said for many cds getting released these days... but if I had to choose a favourite track I would say track 2 polen peltsche, great track and yes i agree the melody does remind me of s-range, maybe even of soulpitcher "it aint over till the fat lady sings" but probably noone will agree with that, the resemblance is very subtle. Anyway this is a very nice cd.

Guest Mauricio (Brazil)
Thomas and Achim proved to us that they have a great future. This album shows us that the progressive sound, even being slow, can make us rock. That´s because all the tracks are very well constructed... it seems that you´re reading a very good book. But there´s an advantage when you compare to a book: they tell you crazy stories in an universal language, that everybody can Understand: Psychedelic Trance. "Candy From The Strange Side" and ASCII Porn are the best ones, in my opinion. BOOOOOM POTS! 8,5/
Setsuko
Prisoners Of The Sun , i realy realy like that name ... and even better , the music those guy's offer is perfect too ... thay have their own sound , i wouldn't call it dark ... it's more mystical imo ... very groovy structures in their tracks , subtle layerpositioning ... btw, Luthje ...one member of the Prisoners is even doing incredible stuuf by himself under Adrenochrome ... we'll definitely hear more from those guys in the future ... best tracks on this album are 2 and 5 ... de rest is also good ... this album gets my psychedelic 8,5/10 rating. keep up the great work , btw , i'm realy looking forward to see you guys live in belgium within a few months (at lock'o'motive)... greetings
Guest Acidhive
Well, ya gotta love their dark style, full of bass, with absolutely no compromise. The cd begins very darkish and moody, and suddenly the bass comes up amd squeezes in gently.. and then you're off.. The smooth arrangements of the tracks and the dark beats and sometimes very subtle noises and strings lift you up to a somewhat funkier atmosphere. Sure, it sounds a little like Necton, but still these guys do have their own style, and that's only a good thing! Furthermore, there are no bad tracks, and since they began P.O.T.S. haven't released any bad tracks either... Sure, some are a bit more forgettable than others, but still... these guys rule! I'd give this a solid 8,5/10 and thumbs up for me here.. Oh, by the way, anyone check out the Lish album yet? Listening to a track of it now.. if you like dark stuff, get this and Lish.. you'll be doing yourself a big favor... :-)

Manuser
1- Orange 9:44 2- Polen Peltsche 9:11 3- Frau Schäle 8:32 4- Candy From The Strange Side 10:24 5- Ascii Porn 7:55 6- Maracas 8:38 7- Blue Void 8:29 8- WM Bälle 9:49 Prisoners of the sun - Are you scientific enough? This album is now over 14 years old but aged pretty well. It obviously lacks the energy of nowadays productions, but it is a pleasant album, quite dark when we talk about progressive psychedelic trance. So yes, german progressive from the early 2000's, therefore much closer to XV Kilist, Atmos, than the last Ticon works (to give you an idea of course, it is still different to Atmos or XV Kilist). Strenghts: - quite varied album, it is darkish on the whole but some tracks are more on the morning side - very nice basslines, not full-on like which is a good point for me - not a mainstream sound, which means for me more solid, less likely to bore after a few listens - pretty psychedelic - those who like nice work on percussions should be pleased weaknesses: - can be a letdown for those who like a more commercial sounding progressive - sometimes lacks a bit of energy - for melodies lovers, not many here Favourite tracks: #2 Polen Peltsche (morning), #4 Candy From The Strange Side (hypnotic), and #5 Ascii Porn (nice darkish atmosphere). My rating: 7.25 /10. Full album on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KibPKLquU4U Cheap at Discogs. At this price it is worth purchasing.
